Hello, I'm an old Leigh on sea lad.Moved there in late 52/53 when the floods had subsided.Myparents took over the Peter Boat.3ft tide mark through the ground floor am some 4-5 inches of mud throughout.
Fortunately I was away at boarding school but the holidays were fantastic.I had an 18ft open launch with a Stuat Turner engine and my friends and I travelled all over the Thames, the Medway ,Havengore to the Crouch, and up to Teddington.We used to sleep aboard under its cover.MrCotgrove (China) taught me knots, splicing,net mending,skulling, gropping for flatfish,cockling and shrimping; which is what he did aboard the Boy David.Which was named after his son Happy days in the Old Town(before the bridge into Old Leigh was built).We eventually left Old Leigh in the 70s.By this time I was jumping out of aeroplanes in the Army.I joined the Army at Langdon Hills(is there still such a place??)Old Leigh was full of characters.Even remember The Lady Saville.Im now 79,fit and healthy and still love a plate of cockles and a pint in the Crooked Billet.As I've said, wonderful memories.Two Tree Island now only has one tree. Chalkwell Station - my earliest memory of the seaside in the early sixties. From London you could see the sea from the Station windows.
