Denver has just become a caricaturized version of itself, kind of like Main Street USA at Disneyland. Most of the culture here spawned artificially in the last 15 years or so. People come here to play the Patagonia sporting, 14er hiking, golden retriever owning, beer drinking, outdoorsman character that they saw on social media, and It’s adorable frankly. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a bad life. It’s just funny how hard people try to box themselves in to their preconceived perception of Colorado. My advice: find some unique, obscure hobbies to take up while you’re here. Participate in a bourgeoning scene. Encourage bar DJ’s to stop playing the same mass appeal garbage everywhere you go. We could take some pages out of NYC’s book.

    • @nikkikoplitz551
      @nikkikoplitz551  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I can see this. I appreciate your take. I agree, a lot of the culture here feels manufactured, esp in some of the “newer” gentrified areas.

I hope you guys are enjoying your life in Denver since moving here. I welcome the people moving to Denver because even though it comes with some negatives (high cost of living, traffic, etc.), it makes me happy to see my city getting appreciated and to see it growing. I’m excited to see where the city will be in 10 years and hope our infrastructure can grow to accommodate the new residents.

Damn Covid! You really can't judge a city during a pandemic unless its about survival because half of the city is closed. PLEASE stop comparing Denver (a rooted western sports adventure mountain city) to NYC. That's just weird. RINO is a brand new neighborhood that's under construction with a culture that's still in its infancy. Almost all of its residents are young, white people that have moved here during Denver's recent growth explosion. 10-years ago RINO was warehouses, open fields, railroad tracks and the men's homeless shelter. You can have a richer experience in more established neighborhoods. Denver is a loud beer and sports town but the pandemic has put a lid on how much we celebrate and support ALL of our varied pro sports teams. Pre-pandemic, Denver turned Orange every Sunday for Broncos football. Sports, arts, rodeo cowboys with an annual Western Stockshow, Olympic training, and nature adventures such as mountain climbing, bike/hiking trails, ski/snowboarding, fitness, hunting, zip lining, 4-wheeling, camping, river runs, lake boating, fishing, horseback riding, paddle boards, gambling and marijuana ... is our culture. People who have moved here have changed Denver into a progressive, hip, millennial vibe so you need to know some locals to expand your view and experiences. I'm confident that the person who honked at you moved here from another city. We're way more chill than that. You two are cute. Welcome to Beautiful Colorado!

Get out of Rino and go into Aurora, S. Federal/ the west side of town if you are looking for more diversity. Federal Blvd has a Vietnamese neighborhood with great restaurants. The center of Denver is all gentrified. Denver is not as diverse as NY, but 30% are latinos, and 10% black. Some times we get annoyed when people try to whitewash our city and make anyone who is not white think they will be outsiders. We are here, even if you don't see us. Ft. Collins less diverse than the rest of CO... not going to lie. Greeley near by has a lot of Latinos, but its really a cow town that smells like cow poop. Denver metro has a lot of Latinos and most of Colorado has quite a few (mainly Mexicans). There are tons of Mexican restaurants and grocery stores, even in Ft Collins Im sure. Denver (Not gentrified central where they live and seem to have only experienced) Aurora, and Lakewood can be pretty diverse. S. Federal blvd has tons of Mexican and Vietnamese restaurants. Ft Collins is near some really beautiful places. It is so close to beautiful mountain trails so it will be worth it if you like that kind of thing. Good luck with your move (from a Colorado native and Latino)

It was terrifying and it’s one of mine nightmares. Where I live there are not a lot of dogs where I take my walk and most apartments don’t allow pets . Is it true that almost everybody have a dog? Do they have any apartments that do no accept pets/dogs? Do they secure their dogs? Will it be safe to take a walk around ? Nothing against dogs but I am just so terrified of dogs. @@nikkikoplitz551 Well, if you use the 16th Street Mall as sort of the "Avenue of Downtown Entertainment" then the northwest end has more bars and clubs and restaurants, and some shopping, while the southeast end is more shopping and services, and fewer bars and such.
The area around the northwest end is officially called the "Union Station Neighborhood" (for obvious reasons) but is unofficially called Lower Downtown (or LoDo) -- which you've probably discovered.
LoDo has tons of restaurants and bars, and if you look around a bit, you can find clubs and such. Confluence Park, across the Platte River (not much of a river) from the REI Co-Op store, lets you put in kayaks, and Six Flags at Elitch's isn't far from there.
Even though it's on the northwest end of the Central Business District, LoDo is called that, because it's the area of Denver's lowest elevation and earliest settlement. The confluence of the Platte River and Cherry Creek, at Confluence Park, is the place where Denver really began.
At the southeast end of the 16th Street Mall, you have Civic Center Park, book-cased on either end by the City & County Building (Denver's City Hall) and the Colorado State Capitol Building (yes, the dome is leafed in real gold). The Denver Art Museum is there and has lots of traveling exhibits. So is the Denver Public Library (don't know what you're into...) and, not far away, the Brown Palace Hotel (great restaurants, and the Ships Tavern is pretty informal).
South of Civic Center Park, in the Golden Triangle, are some good places to eat and shop, also.
I can recommend the Capitol Grille Restaurant, across from the Denver Art Museum.
The main roads that go through the east end of Civic Center are Broadway Boulevard and Lincoln. If you go up and down Broadway, there are lots of other bars and restaurants, and even more clubs, as well as book stores, tattoo parlors and so many marijuana dispensaries that a friend of mine calls it "Broadsterdam." There are some ethnic restaurants along that stretch, also -- not just the expected Tex-Mex (Blue Bonnet is a must-visit), but also a Czech bar for hockey fans (Sobo 151); the British Bulldog (at Stout and Broadway); and even a fine Mexican (NOT Tex-Mex) place that specialize in top-shelf mezcal (Palenque Mezcaleria, near Adelita's and owned by the same people, at 1294 South Broadway).
At 12th Avenue and Lincoln is one of Denver's most famous nightclubs, the Church. You can't miss it. It's in an old church.
It also has several different rooms that cater to different musical tastes, and its been a successful place so long that even I used to be able to go there. :)
East Colfax Avenue passes between Civic Center Transit Station and the State Capitol Building, on its way to the prairie east of Aurora.
That used to be pretty sketch, and some places still are a bit, but it's not nearly what it used to be. There are a bunch of really nice places, and great places to eat, along there.
However, go two blocks north to 17th Avenue, and that's Restaurant Row. Lots of good places, there.
For good Asian food in general, and Vietnamese in particular, head west on Alameda Avenue and drive until you reach Federal Boulevard.
Turn south, there, and you'll find yourselves in the Little Saigon business district.
Denver has a small but growing, and increasingly successful, Vietnamese community (many who originated in the mountains in the west of that country).
If you want *really good* Vietnamese food of all sorts, you can't throw a rock without hitting a really good place, on Federal Boulevard south of Alameda.
If you want Indian food, you'll need to travel, a bit. Most of Denver's South Asian community lives near the Tech Center (hardly surprising, since many came here as tech workers, initially...) so most of the good Indian places are there.
There's a really good Korean Market out on Parker Road, in southern Aurora, called "H Mart." It's been around longer, and has a slightly larger selection of East Asian Imports than Little Saigon, but the Vietnamese are gaining, quickly.
Denver doesn't have a very large black community, but they're pretty tight because of that.
The Center of the black community is Five Points, just north of the Central Business district, but it stretches northeast from there into Whittier and Park Hill, and then north up to MLK and MLK Park, east of Quebec Boulevard.
By comparison to the coastal cities and Chicago, Denver's black neighborhoods are pretty mellow, and much more mixed.
I live only a few blocks from MLK, and I'm not black, and it's pretty chill.
The major Hispanic area is southwest Denver, and the center of that community is Santa Fe Drive.
The Hispanic neighborhoods stretch from west of the Golden Triangle, across Santa Fe, and then out to South Federal to where LIttle Saigon lies.
There are some really good Tex-Mex places along Santa Fe.
All that said, the most diverse neighborhood in Denver, hands down, is Capitol Hill.
The Seventh Avenue restauaant row, between Broadway and Pennyslvania, is pretty nice and has a Trader Joe's.
However, the heart of Capitol Hill is 13th Avenue. You should walk through there, on a Friday night, after COVID ends. :)
Should you have any interest in pricey entertainment and even pricier shopping, head southeast down Speer Boulevard to where it runs into First Avenue, and you'll find yourself in Cherry Creek. Cherry Creek Mall is a typical shopping mall (only about 20 percent more expensive than usual, even at the stores that aren't high-end...), but Cherry Creek North, on the north side of First Avenue, has a lot more variety of shops and restaurants -- and most of them are expensive.
      Let's see, random stuff:
-Denver City Park has the Zoo and the Museum of Nature and Science
-Tattered Cover Bookstore is on East Colfax, across from East High School, south of City Park. The selection is sparse, right now, due to COVID, but it usually has a great selection.
-Bonnie Brae lies along University Boulevard, straight south of Cherry Creek. Good ice cream shop and neighborhood bars and shops.
-Keep going south on University to reach the University of Denver (DU) neighborhood, and have amazing Middle Eastern food at Jerusalem Restaurant.
-The Greek neighborhood around the Orthodox Cathedral East Alameda and Leetsdale Drive has some affordable Greek places, but they're mostly local joints.
-Platt Park, bounded by East Mississippi on the north, and I-25 on the east, has lots of good places to hang out. Check out Old South Pearl Street.
That's way more than you asked for, but should get you off to a good start, once the city opens back up. :)

I definitely haven't learned as much as I could/should about Denver & definitely love your insight on how it's changed since settlement (you made some "back in my day" jokes so assume you were there?? ha!). @@nikkikoplitz551 You're quite welcome. I"m not native to Colorado, but I've lived in the City & County of Denver, by choice, for most of my adult life.
And no, I'm not a senior citizen, although I am pushing that, a bit -- which gives you an idea how long The Church has been around. :)
The name of the neighborhood you're in is, technically, the northwestern edge of Five Points, across the Platte River from Globeville.
The problem is that Globeville had (and to some extent, still has) a reputation as an undesirable area of town -- not because of gangs or violence (not since the 1990s, anyway), but just because it's so poor, the housing is so awful, and there's so much industry there.
So, the businesses in your part of Five Points created the "River North Art District" (RINO) as a marketing gimmick, as the area started to be re-developed. :)
If you move east, from there, into Five Points, proper, or Cole or Clayton or Whittier or Park Hill, you'll find more affordable housing -- but also older neighborhoods still in early(ish) transition.
Welcome to Denver. It's a good place. :)

In the areas that you described, that orbit around Downtown (RiNo, LoDo, etc) It is very very white (and CO as a whole is also very white, but there are def areas of the Front Range that are diverse). Similar to your observation that everyone looks the same, those areas are where people with money move to to experience the hipster, 'idea' of Denver urban living. Definitely go a little more south and east, in Denver and surrounding cities, for more diverse food and people. Definitely doesn't have as abundant of restaurants that compare to what NYC might be, but even NYC many stinkers :). One thing that you may find is that spiciness here is very mild. If you go to the Korean part of town in Southeast Denver, or to the numerous Mexican and South Asian restaurants, ask them how spicy their food is and let them know your tolerance.
The mountains are beautiful but definitely the traffic is so annoying. Make sure you plan early mornings to get to where you want to go to try and beat traffic, or try and go during the week. During non Covid times, many locals will go during the week to avoid the huge weekend tourist crowds. Also, if you find you go a lot, getting an annual pass is the way to go. Also, lots of great hiking and mountain stuff that requires driving North or South to access so don't be limited to i70!
Make sure to take day trips to New Mexico and Southern Colorado, deserts are amazing. Also, Wyoming has some great national parks and mountains as well.

Yes, definitely want to clarify that these impressions were pretty limited to “RiNo.” After living here for a year, still haven’t explored as much of Denver but have definitely seen neighborhoods with more diversity (& better food)! There aren’t crosswalks on Blake & Walnut which I’ve found interesting since it feels pretty walkable, but I realize it’s still “new” (newly gentrified) & maybe not built for as many people as have moved here. And you guys have a very limited understanding of CO and the culture here when related to people and food. Denver has become a cultureless fusion of people that aren't from CO - you have to leave that area to actually get a feel for what CO is.
