Teaching my self dune gooning the hard way, hang gliding

  • It looked easy on the internet, lol. Got couple of whacks, but glider and myself are completely ok. All whacks were because i tried avoiding flying into sea. This glider model isn´t best for dune gooning and next time i will use light west not full blown xc harness. At end i started to get the hang of it.

What a terrific place to learn! There are not many places where such a low shallow slope will produce enough lift for soaring.
One 90 second trip down and back like you did in this video will teach you more about really piloting a glider than a dozen straight short glides down a small hill without ridge lift ever would.

Very well done. I fly a fun 160 which is perfect for dune gooning and im going to learn just as you did. Now all i need is a deserted beach : )

I'm actually really impressed. There is not much room there, and not much ridge for a bump above it. Those are tough conditions and I think you're killing it.

I did learn flying, and even moved up to a Moyes Litesport, reaching 100h. But where I live we never get strong wind blowing perpendicular to the beach. When it happens it brings rain. You might get one chance a year. So I just sold my first floater glider and gave up this idea unfortunately. Makes no sense to keep a single surface glider “just in case”.

I want to learn exactly the same way when my glider arrives in two months time. I live very close to the beach which is lonely and has very steady winds.

    •  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Nice. Just make sure you don´t go alone to be safe. Biggest dangers are flying into sea and turning downwind at low height.

The best lift is at the top of the ridge, so once you get going work your way back up the ridge until the peak of it is directly below you. Definitely one of the most fun flying.

The worst thing about vids like these ...... They always seem to attract the armchair TH-cam troll professionals that apparently know allot more than the person who made the video . Ironically , said armchair TH-cam troll professionals don't seem to have any videos themselves, hence the armchair TH-cam troll professionals commenting on Other's videos . Sigh , Tonis , nice vid and well done :)

I beleive the glider is not the best. To much penetration ( lots of double surface). A floater puts you flying ( and controlling) near stall speed. Cheers , fly safe.

You learnt quick!. I think a little more air speed (run a bit harder) on takeoff. Cant afford even a mild stall when duning. Im guessing you did run a bit harder towards the end there. Or another 5knts would make all the difference.

    •  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

There is still much to learn. I just have to get to the sweet spot on lift, i stayed too far out. Also this wing doesn't handle good on low speeds. Now i have better wing for dune soaring, just waiting good weather to try it out :)

first you would better take a single surface glider, two : not enough wind , the dune is too little and for John Malibu2 : I know about I'm talking ...well done for a beginning

    •  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

All allready done ; ). Got myself single surface glider and things got instantly easier. This dune is fine for flying(looks smaller on video), just enough wind is needed, some 8-10 m/s seems optimal. Soon i will upload new video with progress :).

Launch from the downtubes, push out a little harder at first to get higher in the 'lift band'. Fly closer to the edge of stall once up to get min sink, and try to drift back to the crest of the hill a bit more.
That was FUN. I was impressed how far you made it down the beach and back :-)

Moyes Malibu, Wills Wing Falcon 3+, Funky. All these single surface gliders are floaty allowing easier turns in a narrow lift band and very maneuverable. A little more wind than he has would help too

  • @stormsrider9424

Isn't it dangerous to learn on your own? Why not hire an instructor? Then they'd teach you how to soar too and you'll progress safely and faster. At least make sure to view videos of hang-glider crashes to understand what you're risking by self-learning.
