I did something like this with very wet watercolor washes. I wet the paper, put down color, stuck down a stencil, and brushed another color on top, and let the entire thing dry stuck together. I made some really nice papers that I used for covers, since the paper was good, thick watercolor paper.

I love spraying -- so much tidier than dipping paper. I live in Oregon where it can be very wet outside 9 months of the year, so my spraying and stencil layering is done indoors most of the time. I used a large box (about 3' by 3' square) to make a spray station on a bookshelf in my craft area, with the box opening facing where I stand. Having the protective sides (left, right, back, top) keeps overspray from getting all over my table/house. I have a multiple sets of Dollar Tree cookie cooling racks on top of Dollar Tree trays that I use instead of a cookie sheet, the bottom-most page always has lines on it from the cookie rack. I just do a few sheets of paper/envelopes at a time, then swap that tray/rack out for a new one, and leave the paper on their racks to dry.
One of my most fun discoveries recently is that spraying coffee on neon notebook paper and then layering on a sheet of white coffee paper and spraying that with coffee makes the neon color run and create a neon tint on the coffee dyed copy paper. Layering neon on neon can make for some strange color combinations, but in my experiments yellow&pink or blue&green mixed well with coffee and each other. Most of the lines for writing disappeared if I used enough coffee on the neon notebook paper. The neon paper I used was from Walmart, other brands/quality of papers may have different reactions with the coffee and each other so it's a fun thing to experiment with.

The first time I coffee-dyed paper, I had a shallow pan of the coffee to soak the papers in. After staining everything within reach, I switched to a spray bottle. A lot less messy for me! LOL
I haven't used stencils, yet, though! Nice results!
    Thank you ma'am!

The mess!! Yes, the spray bottle is a bit neater. Try the stencils for sure, Su! Much love to you!

I just laid the paper one at a time as I sprayed them but also with colored water and lay the next paper on top and so on and so on I would do a stack of 50 or more papers then lay them on top of a flat surface to dry in the house and check them the next day and move them around taking out the dry one did this tell all where dry they turned out great, and I have tried spraying one at a time and dryer them one by one on the stove burner. I liked the first way better and they took on the beautiful colors of one before!!!

Thank you! And yes to getting different perspectives! This was so nice and easier to understand! Thank you for taking the time to actually explain your way and perspective and tips! I pretty much use tea stained papers the most and have many reams of bonded onion skin paper that I use (dyed) I always use fountain pen friendly paper, ALWAYS, because I write with fountain pens and so much of the paper that most people are using in journals are NOT fountain pen friendly so the ink bleeds through the paper…I also always make nice writing boards for my journals which are so fun and useful! Thank you for those awesome video, tips and ideas! 💡 very refreshing! 🤗 Happy New Year 🎈
PS…I use a dehydrator to dry my paper and it’s so fast and easy! I can easily do 50 sheets ir more (after dunking them, lol) in an hour!

This is so yummy! Have you tried using a foam brush with dunking it some coffee? I've seen a video from Barbara at 49dragonflies, do this method. The less fuss, more fun. I also get the cheapest stuff I can find, though we don't have the Dollar Tree here. I love the tone of your voice, and the fact you get straight to the project! I always get the ratio of coffee to water wrong. You silly with melting the bottle. Hope you didn't scald yourself, Thankyou. New subscriber. 🇦🇺💖💖💖

In addition to watercolors, you can use Easter egg dyes. These mediums give you other color options.
I think using a spray bottle is a genius way to get an ombré effect. You can use different colors or different saturations depending upon what final product you want. I sense a trip to Dollar Tree in my future…
