    Oh, nowwwww this song makes sense. Weird that this is so widely-performed in high schools when it only makes any sense as a burlesque number

      Ha ha I was in a production of this in high school but the drama group was a bit risque and the director pretty much stuck to the traditional direction. We had a TONNE of complaints from parents! We thought it was the best thing ever though!

      Before I did this show in high school as a freshman the director went out to warn the audience that we “won’t get all the way undressed.” We had beautiful handmade gowns with Velcro over black silk chemises and shorts which were lined in the same color lace as our jewel toned dresses. Beautiful

    I conducted an eight-performance run of this show at a community theater in Minneapolis, forty years ago. I still remember all the cues!

    They replaced "Go Hollanderize it" with "go shorten the sleeves" which really makes no sense. "Hollanderizing" was a process of dyeing and treating cheap muskrat fur to make it look and feel like the much more expensive mink. Many "mink" coats in the 40 and 50s were actually Hollanderized muskrat. So that implies that Nathan gave Adelaide a cheap imitation mink, in which case, she could afford to give it up!!

    • @stoutcat
      @stoutcat 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      "Tell them to Hollanderize it for some other dame" was the first verse. "Go shorten the sleeves for somebody else" was the next verse.
      Hilarously, if you google the lyrics, you will find the phrase "And tell them to alter and rise it" which clearly is a garbling of "Hollanderize it" by someone who had never heard of the term.

    • @mwarnecke
      @mwarnecke 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The Hollander family who invented the process set the record straight in the NY Times. Very interesting. www.nytimes.com/1992/07/21/opinion/l-what-adelaide-meant-about-hollanderizing-030392.html

    • @jeffgodsey541

      Shortened sleeves implies it was bought for someone with longer arms. "You mean you gave me a gift you bought for some other dame?"

    • @dashadanielle4797
      @dashadanielle4797 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jeffgodsey541 huh. I was thinking it meant something along the lines of showing more skin

    • @EditorOfSL
      @EditorOfSL 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Also the original line in the first verse was “That was late ‘38, I recall.” Wonder why they changed it to “What generous gifts, I recall.” That doesn’t really make much sense either.
      Oh, and this isn’t aimed at Nathan, it’s just a song she sings for her job as an actress/singer, just a part she’s playing.

    How did get those dresses off so easily because there was no velcro then, and how did they pick everything up so fast without dropping anything?

      Yes because of the curves that they had and they didn't have any plastic surgery like The Kardashians. These women are the real deal and in that sexy underwear that they are dancing in, they are Sex Symbols as well.

    I love this number in the show. A few years ago I saw a Regional Production of Guys and Dolls. The point in the song where they remove the clothing, Adelaide had a costume malfunction and what she was wearing underneath began to also fall off. The chorus girls jumped into action and surrounded her as they finished the number.
