I am a teacher of 38 years and worry about the teachers coming in. It is obvious that you are a great teacher, but the hours that you keep at work are not sustainable. Please don’t perpetuate a work style that is not healthy, not fair or and is very damaging. Teachers need to stand up for fair treatment and not normalize or romanticize all of the abuse that goes on in the profession. A planning time is exactly that, time for you to plan, and it should be respected, by colleagues and admin. I know that you keep things positive and that is very admirable, but please consider using your platform to advocate for fair and sustainable work practices in teaching. My hats off to you for coming back to the classroom. I wish you all the best.❤
We all work long, long days … at home and school. So, balance is difficult. We all need each other as teachers, and what is shared here is valuable to teachers who need support and help.
33rd year here. I agree that we need to stand up for a fair work environment for teachers. As a veteran teacher who has mentored for years, stressing the importance of work/life balance is always my main focus for new teachers. This job will always have something that needs to get done, but that is the joy of teaching because we always have tomorrow 😊. I love the energy and vibe that Michelle brings to all of us.🎉 #goteam #teachersrock #iteachmiddles
It’s unrealistic that a teacher can get it all done within their planning periods at school…especially when in a new role. It’s bogus if people keep pretending that us Type-A teachers don’t have to work outside contract hours. We do, it’s not “fair”, but neither is making those that work outside of contract hours feel bad. Feeling anxious and unprepared for a day in front of littles isn’t how we roll. If some teachers want to prep outside of their work day…kudos to them! Leaving work at work isn’t everyone’s mantra and that should be respected.
@@kristinkemmerer8378I understand your point and I’m absolutely one of those people that can’t sleep if I don’t know exactly what I’m doing the next day. I’m in my 16th year. When I first started teaching I was pregnant with my son. I just had a memory pop up on my Facebook of my prek son writing on my board in my dark classroom at 6:20 p.m. my contract hours ended at 2:50. It hit me how much quality time I missed with him because of school. My daughter has not been in my class as much outside of coming on field trips with me and having fun. I’m of the mind now that we all should work to live. She is providing time saving information that saved me during the pandemic and I am here now because Michelle is an absolute RESOURCE for those of us trying to have a satisfying life/work balance. If you were to see her do these things in real time you would see that she can put things together super fast as well! So it’s not super time consuming for her. I learned how to do the slides from her & now I can put together colored slides super fast!
Your INTERACTIVE word wall is truly inspirational! I’ve never seen a word wall done in that fashion and I can absolutely see how the text, images and physical examples would all help to reinforce student learning. Great job 👏🏽
I’m a GED instructor. I’m retired from teaching Special Education K-6 for 23 years. It’s amazing what we used to do just to manage teaching. We just about kill ourselves to teach. I really admire your organization. Thanks for sharing. 😊
I’m an Australian primary teacher who’s been following you since before you left the classroom. I absolutely love watching your new series and seeing you falling in love again ❤️
I have the same calendar and I LOVE it. I have found Vis a vis wet erase markers are better than dry erase. My 6th graders lean against the board it when they go to line up. Wet erase markers were a game changer.
I love getting Mrs. Emerson vids, especially a week in the life vids. Also I took your idea of meal prepping on Sundays for the whole week and it has been a huge time savor and my belly thanks you for it. I actually eat lunch now. You are an amazing teacher and I want to add that if my school allowed me to vlog in the classroom I would because you inspire me to do classroom vlogs. My positive pants are on and I'll catch you in the next one. 😂
I live in Delaware but shop in Salisbury MD. Love your videos! Just accepted a reading teacher position for 5th grade! I will have a morning and afternoon group! Your videos help me so much!
I’m loving your interactive science wall! My dad who taught science would be proud. Balance takes time, if you have to stay late, your future self will thank you later. Your kids seem to be amazing! I’ve been in a rut dealing with COVID for the first time. I feel bad that I have let people down, but you got to take care of yourself first!
Chair pockets are a life saver for storing notebooks and workbooks for multiple classes. The store more deep pocket ones from really good stuff are the best.
Tip that I would do with Tuesday folders (and graded work!). I had students or a parent helper stuff all non graded stuff and I would make a stapled packet of graded work for students (because I also kept my stacks in alphabetical order) and then I could simple hand kids their stapled stack to stuff themselves into folder during dismissal. It worked super well!
Wow! The science board is very impressive. As a student graduating soon and starting my first year of teaching next Fall, I am so thankful you went back into the classroom!! You are walking me through the beginning of the year and it's so helpful. THANKS Michelle!!!
Happy Monday, Michelle! I enjoy all your videos and I totally relate to your systems and routines. The beginning of the year is stressful but, as you say, our future selves will thank us later for the prep work we are doing. Thanks for all you do! 💜
I love following along on your teaching vlogs! I have a burning question-How do you keep your daily workouts going? How have you changed your schedule to accommodate them? Are you still working out in the evening like you did before going back to the classroom? I’d love to know how you keep your energy up after a full day of teaching. Love all that you do!! :)
Happy Monday treat from Michelle! It’s so nice to see you happy in whatever capacity you choose is best for you and your family. Have a great school year!
Awesome video, Michelle. I look forward to the vlogs through the year. As a teacher, I think work-life balance is near impossible the first year in a new school or a new grade level. There is just too much to absorb and process. Love your interactive Science wall. I'm going to create one in my classroom. Thank you for the inspiration!
So happy to see you again in the classroom! I am always the first in school😅. I am also a 4th class teacher this year, but in german primary schools you're also teaching in the other classes. Greetings from Germany❤
Michelle, School will bring it out of you regardless if it's the best or the worst sometimes out of you regardless if you are teacher or student but remember that the victory goes to those who endure. Whatever you can do to get yourself in a happy mood or give yourself a laugh do it because that is what will become your energy boost for the day and as the old saying goes, "Laughter is the most important medicine". Hugs !, - Dwight
I use my Apple Watch like your phone. Set alarms for all the tasks and times I need to do something throughout the teaching day. Too easy to forget things otherwise.
Just love all your bulletin board. Bold, colorful and very inviting to read. I’m just curious how the students are able to read the ones that are right behind your “kidney shaped / small group table/desk”? The table seems to block them but maybe it’s not for the students to reference 🤔🤷🏻♀️. Either way great week of vlogging love that you just randomly surprise us bam 💥 with uploading your vids. ❤
Love your Science interactive board! How do you choose which group to do it with since you have two groups? As fro your calendar, I also was terrible at updating it so I decided as one of my class job's (Teacher's Assistant") that was part of their responsibilities! They loved moving all the numbers and adding all the monthly events.
Your boards look great! Do you have a union? In our district we are guaranteed four hours of planning a week. If a meeting or something disrupts that we are either provided make up planning time or paid for our missed time.
I would rethink your calendar. It looks weird that the numbers skip. Also what if a holiday or student birthday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, you can’t add it to the calendar.
Love the vlog, but could you share more about what you are teaching and class activity ideas? I am also curious what you think of Eureka Math. I taught it last year and felt it was confusing for students and very worksheet-heavy.
I totally appreciate the feedback! Just to note… I can only share so much about what I’m teaching and the activities when I’m following a curriculum because I can’t share the entire curriculum, if that makes sense.
I watched your videos way back when you taught second grade. Do you think that someday you'd like to teach the second or even third grade level? (I'm partial to the little kids. I taught Kindergarten one year and second grade once but first grade for 25 years until 2013. I love the 6 to 8 year olds.) I know you've been fifth grade and now fourth but what's your favorite age group? One more thing, is your Math Keywords poster a little umm 'whomperjawed" (I say that and I'm not a Texan, just a southerner) or is it the camera angle? It seems slanted. I'm one of THOSE who needs everything even. LOL (sorry, in advance)
