I would like to take advantage of this opportunity. I am semi-retired at 71. Just last month I started a worm farm for composting and selling worm tea at flea markets. Learning what to feed the worms, I found that wheatgrass was an excellent choice and easy to grow. From there I discovered microgreens. I believe that these two new adventures could work well together. Using worm castings for the microgreens and then placing the waste back into worm bins for the worms to eat the beneficial roots and recycle the castings.
Yes absolutely you could give the spent mats to the worms and they will eat them up! Im going to add a ton of worms this spring to where im dumping the mats. Pumped to hear what you’re up to! I also think the micros will be a great addition at the flea markets. Hi Harold. I read your comment and wanted to say I'm glad you have found enjoyment and fulfillment in your retirement. About your question regarding worm castings being used in your microgreens. There was a bit to "unpack" in regards to what you said. Basically worm casting would be in my opinion a bad idea. For one you could very unnecessarily transfer microbes or bacteria to your greens. Secondly microgreens do not need a nutrients source to grow or germinate. If you did manage to make this happen, I am happy for you. Journey well sir.
I am from Colombia, and the market for this type of cultivation is still in its early stages here. It is not easy to find the necessary materials, such as suitable irrigation trays and grow lights. Two years ago, as part of my thesis, I developed a technology for growing plants indoors, with the aim of implementing it later. Currently, I have a seedling production business in Bogotá, the capital of Colombia, with 11 shelves in a warehouse. In addition, I am starting to venture into the production of microgreens. My system is still somewhat artisanal, but I am excited about the possibility of learning from the improvements that have already been achieved in other places.

been growing now for 3 years here in the north idaho area, selling at farmers markets breaking even, tried stores, and restaurant's will very little want, very low understanding of what micros even are here and little want over junk food and meat idems.... very dissapointed...
I think you need to change up your approach and focus on educating your community, pulling them out of the junk food rut they are in. This is a huge opportunity for you to make a tremendous impact in your area and literally save lives
@@DonnyGreens no. Only microgreens cuz they’re so easy. Why wouldn’t everyone who eats them want to grow them? Am I naive? Idk. Sorry if I’m thinking of this in a stupid way, but I’m still wondering who wouldn’t grow their own.
No, people are busy, lazy, and dont want to bother growing their own microgreens. Many people are happy to purchase from their local farmer. A very small percentage of people are willing to grow their own food
Since you explain the process and equipment so well I only have one question. Is the water you use chlorinated? I wonder if filtered regular tap water is good enough. Sorry if you have already answered this question. Thank you
Yes, you can use just plain tap water but filtering the water is even better!! Id love to have you in my next challenge if you were interested. I could really dive deep with ya. Check it out here: onetrayaway.com
I'm finding out about clean meats grown in a regenerative way . One of my favorite meals is a grass fed steak with pea micros garnishing the top of it in a classy Oregon coastal restaurant. Microgreens simply are not known about yet . Sourced restaurants are just beginning like micros.
@DonnyGreens What is the best research source you have found on microgreens? I'm looking to do research on the comparison of microgreens to their fully grown version. Some people have reactions fully grown plants self defense properties. I truly believe micros are far more biologically available than fully grown plants. A little science to back this theory up would go a long way. I am hoping to present a speech to my Toastmasters group on this subject to prepare the way to promoting what we know tastes and feels amazing. Any references or links will be truly appreciated.
@DonnyGreens Thank you , I will look her up . What I have found out so far is microgreens have very low levels of oxalic acid compared to full grown vegetable counterparts. Oxalic acid is an anti nutrient that prevents the uptake of the benefits of full grown vegetables . This is the plants natural defense from being eaten as it makes the next generation Microgreens really are superior in bioavailable nutrients.

Hey there! I was wondering if you could share a bit about the process of getting the necessary licenses and certifications for food production. Also, could you give me an idea of how much time, money, and effort it takes to secure all the required permits? I'm really curious about this aspect. Thanks a lot for your insights!
you can contact your local department of agriculture

**GROW** I would love to learn more. Ive been interested in growing both microgreens and gourmet mushrooms (oysters, shittake, etc) Ive dabbled in mycology for a while.
Epicc! Ive grown some oyster mushrooms as well but never got it going consistently enough to sell. I want to get back into it for sure though!! Id love to get you growing microgreens in the meantime, you can join my microgreens challenge here: onetrayaway.com/
been growing now for 3 years here in the north idaho area, selling at farmers markets breaking even, tried stores, and restaurant's will very little want, very low understanding of what micros even are here and little want over junk food and meat idems.... very dissapointed...
I think you need to change up your approach and focus on educating your community, pulling them out of the junk food rut they are in. This is a huge opportunity for you to make a tremendous impact in your area and literally save lives
@@DonnyGreens trust me I've tried, but most here scoff at anything green ... it's a kill it and grill type mindset here
change the mindset. Not everyone wants to kill themselves slowly. Many people are looking for change and opportunities for change
What is the smallest scale I could start with and still be worth my time/be able to slightly profit? Also will this work during the winter in WI?
Grow! As a retiree, I would like another way to supplement my income.

I don’t understand who the customers are. Wouldn’t everybody just grow them themselves? Who would buy them?
You think everyone is willing to start growing their own food ???
@@DonnyGreens no. Only microgreens cuz they’re so easy. Why wouldn’t everyone who eats them want to grow them? Am I naive? Idk. Sorry if I’m thinking of this in a stupid way, but I’m still wondering who wouldn’t grow their own.
No, people are busy, lazy, and dont want to bother growing their own microgreens. Many people are happy to purchase from their local farmer. A very small percentage of people are willing to grow their own food
@@DonnyGreens well, now it does make sense when you put it that way. 🤔 this is making me want to sell microgreens now. Thank you.
awesome!!!

Selling Cress?
I'm finding out about clean meats grown in a regenerative way . One of my favorite meals is a grass fed steak with pea micros garnishing the top of it in a classy Oregon coastal restaurant. Microgreens simply are not known about yet . Sourced restaurants are just beginning like micros.
Exactly!! its just the beginning my friend!! best time to be getting into microgreens woop woop!
Dr Rhonda Patrick has done a lot of work specifically with the broccoli ones and their sulforaphane content. maybe start there!
@DonnyGreens Thank you , I will look her up . What I have found out so far is microgreens have very low levels of oxalic acid compared to full grown vegetable counterparts. Oxalic acid is an anti nutrient that prevents the uptake of the benefits of full grown vegetables . This is the plants natural defense from being eaten as it makes the next generation
Microgreens really are superior in bioavailable nutrients.
yes they really are!!
Grow. I’m starting in April! I live in Edmonton Alberta 👍

@@DonnyGreens Really thinking about it! I'm scared about starting up since so many big growers are in my area of RI and MA. I would love to start farming, my hands belong in the dirt, but worried if I shift over that I won't be able to compete. Still a good idea?
I just made a video about if its still a good idea to start this business in 2024 and i also specifically talked about competition and what i think about it! Check out that video! I had two of the biggest growers in the northeast and actually internationally and i did just fine. I would start small and learn to grow first without the pressure of starting a business. If I sign up for the challenge do all the supplies ship to Czechia? Is there additional costs?
I can only ship to North America. All the info is on the web page at onetrayaway.com/. My abroad students typically source their own supplies but I have shipped abroad for a few students who wanted to pay extra.
We have not so much farmer markets here in Germany - it's hard to sell here.

Is registration period for the challenge still open?
