    I'd pay an obscene amount of money to hear the alternate versions of Great Gig discussed at the beginning.

      Check out floydpodcast.com and listen to any of the episodes featuring 1972 performances of *Dark Side* when the song was still called "The Mortality Sequence."
      The quality varies, but I know there are some versions that play preacher sermons over the piano and organ of "Great Gig."

    I saw a documentary about the making of DSOTM some years back, which had an interview with Clare Torrey talking about recording this. Apparently, outside of the "oh baby" mulligan, what ended up on the album was genuinely her first take. After she finished, she said, the audio booth was dead silent - and she immediately started apologizing because she thought they hated it. But no, the entire band + Parsons and the engineers were all stunned speechless. She actually insisted on doing a few more takes but, of course, none were as good.
    I mean, seriously, just imagine hearing that live the first time, with absolutely NO preparation or warning for what she was about to unleash. I'd certainly be sitting there boggling!

    For me, Torry's vocals represented every human emotion given her multifaceted moods that she exhibited on the song, at one moment her voice represents desperation, the next relief, then sadness, then anger, than triumph, then madness, etc.

    This song is the perfect example of the importance of albums and what they're capable of doing with the order of their tracks. This song is surely great by itself, but when you listen to it within the context of the album, with the songs leading up to it, it just gets elevated to something beyond great to something spiritual, something beyond words. And I think that's exactly what they were going for.

    When I used to take acid in high school I would listen to Dark Side of the Moon in it’s entirety & oh man when this song would come on I would PEAK HARD, like when her voice got intense I felt like I was floating into the sky & when she would go calm my high would calm down. Almost as if it was in sync, it was sooo intense listening to this song on acid. Her voice still gives me goosebumps.

      The album was partially inspired by Syd Barrett's madness caused by drug abuse, and some people take acid to listen to it. Can't imagine missing the point and ruining the experience in a more epic way.

    • @nikolademitri731
      @nikolademitri731 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@jenniferschmitzer299 I don’t understand your comment/question, what do you mean?
      If I might give my two cents: one can still certainly be astonished and experience the transcendent with the song while being completely sober, of course, just as you can without the song, completely sober or not, by looking at the night sky, walking through the woods, meditating on existence, etc, BUT one cannot experience the specificity of lsd and the kind of transcendent experience it can offer without actually doing the chemicals. That combined with music, is a very special thing indeed, there’s a reason that particular chemical is so closely linked to the psychedelic, progressive, and experimental music, particularly from the mid 60s, through the 70s…!
      I’ve experienced the album on that specific chemical journey, and it’s not that it’s “better”, or that you can’t be in awe of it without that, or something similar, but you just can’t have that specific experience of the music without that specific thing. It doesn’t cheapen it, nor does it stand as inherently superior, it just is, and what it is can be quite the life affirming and transcendental experience.
      Also, yeah, unless you’re a chemist, or have generous friends (I was once the “generous friend”, when I went there), you’re gonna have to pay for it. It’s not like we’re talking a lot of money typically, no more than buying the album. That’s the world we live in, and “money” is the next song on the album anyway, and as that song pretty much goes: it is a crime, sure, but everyone is a hypocrite whatever their opinions on it, and the way it effects us. Given that crime (in more ways than one in this case), I’m fine with having to pay a small price to go there, but people ought to be careful or that price could be much greater as poor Sid’s life showed… ✌️

    • @nikolademitri731
      @nikolademitri731 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@thecandlemaker1329 so not taking acid is the point of the album? Where’s that message in the album, and where does Roger Water’s rail against drug experimentation? I’m not just challenging you to be a jerk or dïck, I’m legit asking. If that’s a fact, I’ll stand corrected, but idk…
      Separate note, people have listened to the album drunk almost definitely far more than they have while taking lsd. I hope you share the same ire for them, as alcohol is of course a far, far more dangerous drug than lsd ever has been or ever will be, as well an actually addictive drug (unlike lsd or psilocybin).
      Also, I think you’re referring to, “Wish You Were Here”, which is absolutely explicit in it’s reference to Sid (with “Shine On You Crazy Diamond”, particularly). DSOTM, not so much.. or at least not that I’ve ever read. If DSOTM is somehow about him, then it’s only implicitly so, with the whole “Brain Damage” part of the album, but it’s not explicitly referring to Sid like WYWH is.
      Even still, and if DSOTM were meant to be way more about Sid beyond the fact that he’d left 5 years prior due to mental illness brought on by *hardcore drug abuse and being drugged,* which of course affected them all deeply, I don’t think, “look at poor Sid, you better not take that blotter, laddie!”, is the point Roger had in mind… After all, they took their fair share of psychedelics too, but Sid was next level, and beyond that he was also being drugged with it outside of his knowledge and consent, which was devastating and is extremely dangerous in a variety of ways when we’re talking psychedelics… I’m just saying, to reduce it to that, or even imply it’s a major theme, is reductive and bizarre imo.
      But hey, enjoy the album and your life however YOU want to. ✌️

    I remember the first time I heard dark side on vinyl. I was at a friends house, where his father used to have a massive sound system. We were in the dark, in the middle of the night near to dawn. By the time this song ended, we were both crushed against the sofa. None of us could stand up to turn the disc around to continue listening the rest so we sat there in silence for a few minutes. Never again in my life felt such and overwhelming void of desperation. Beautiful experience

    The drumming in The Great Gig In The Sky is master work. The drums build up driving the music to a dramatic atmosphere, and every drum fill lays down an enthralling feeling to surely make the listener feel like they're just melting. I hate people who keep saying that Dark Side of the Moon is overrated. Let's be real, if something is overrated from Pink Floyd's discography it's The Wall.
    Dark side is something I've never heard before, it's one of a kind, it's very surreal and something that sounds like it has been made by aliens trying to show humanity a reflection of their lives. And it's possibly one of the best albums of all time. After listening to many other albums after this, I always find myself coming back to it. It's a timeless masterpiece.

    The other spoken word heard was provided by Myfanwy ("Miv") Edwards, who was once married to Pink Floyd’s road manager Peter Watts and had given birth to a girl named ... Naomi. (Yes, that Naomi Watts ... would would have turned four during the first recording sessions). You hear her say:
    “I never said I was frightened of dying”
    It’s interesting because you don’t know the context of why she would say that. After all, all the interviews taken were done with the aid of skilfully arranged cards and no interactions occurred. (Roger “The Hat” Manifold was the one exception where Waters did conduct it as an interview). But regardless, the fact that was said also shows that some have accepted their end fate and came to terms with it.
    Once again, this is the absolute brilliance of TDSOTM: it’s a clearly defined space that is big enough for anyone and everyone. You don’t have to subscribe to any viewpoint to “get it” because ultimately they expressed through music very common and relatable aspects of daily living. We may not have had the kind of tour schedule Pink Floyd had from 1972 to even 1974 (it’s f-ing insane) but we all have had to deal with the thought of death.
    Keep up the good journey ... and I’ll see on the ... flip side of the album 😉

    That Pink Floyd tried several incarnations of material over Richard Wright’s amazing instrumental track and then finally came up with the stellar non-verbal vocals that they ended up with shows the ability of fine tuning and craftsmanship and creative control that was going on within the group in this time period. They were simply hitting on all cylinders during the making of this album.

    5:56 that's also why the spoken word part 'everyone who hears this whisper will die' is brilliant. On first glimpse it sounds ominous, but it's a trueism. If you hear the whisper, you are alive. And everyone alive will die, some day.

    You should do why Ringo Starr is a great drummer. People think he's bad but in reality, he started the long domino chain that is modern rock and roll drumming.

    There’s also the faint line right around the time the calm section of GGITS, where a woman’s voice says “he always said he wasn’t afraid of dying.” It reminds us of the people we leave behind, and in the context of the era of the British stiff upper lip that Pink Floyd and the doorman lived in, ive always kind of seen the words of the doorman not as honest and genuine courage in the face of death, but rather a facade of stoicism and “hanging on in quiet desperation is the english way” as they say in Time.

    • @Wveth
      @Wveth 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you sure that's what the voice is saying? I always hear "I never said I was frightened of dying." To me it feels like a denial of the emotion in the first part of the song.

    I always appreciate the thoughtful commentary from this Polyphonic channel.
    This video also reminds me that I don't have to agree with the artist's view on religion to appreciate their work/art. I can slightly understand Gilmour's atheism, but still disagree with his worldview and be amazed at his (and Pink Floyd's) music.
