I actually went to a free bootcamp here in Bosnia that works simmilarly to this and I can tell you it was awesome expirience. I even got a job after 8 months!!
Lol this can be a double edged sword for some companies though. I have an app on several old phones that I have reset, and put their own email addresses were the app gives me points for free gift cards and they gain useless data from those devices; they never leave my house, they don't have apps installed aside from he manufacture apps, and their new emails with nothing on them except google stuff (obviously). Just one example. btw I get about 30-50 bucks every 4 or so months, not bad.
I'm Chamith from sri lanka. Really love this work. There is so many people out there want to learn to code but don't have money, or a Computer or both. I wish if i was born in USA. Unfortunately it's not also i don't have money to go to USA, How ever thank you guys for leting me know , there is very good people in this world. Keep This Up.
Yes Willems. I'm coding all day. but it's so hard to find a job in Sri Lanka. But i never give up. I do my best to go to USA. unFortunately it's required a lot money. it's can take few years to collect that money. but i do my best.
I read lots of critiques like "Nothing is free blablablabla" First of all, this project is not free, it is privately financed by a french business man named Xavier Niel... You might like the guy or not (it doesn't really matter). And his objective is quite clear... that the students leaving this university help it finance it afterwards. That simple... not free. But as a young student, you are not in debt and certanly not obliged to pay for many of the stupid things universities force you to. I almost forgot, if you don't want to finance it... you don't have to. However, it turns out, most people will give a hand. It seems to be a good alternative, or at least interesting. Oh... and the piscine is not at all a summer camp, many students fail it and have to leave. So the selection is quite harsh. We will see the results in a near future I hope. And if this model works out properly, it will be an interesting experiment.
Let's see what happens. Not trying won't answer the question anyways. If it fails, then be it. If it succeeds, good for them. The US is different indeed... it is not even homogenous inside its borders. So it might work in some places while failing in others... Again, experimenting is the only way of knowing, or at least collect some usable data.
Well, you geography makes a difference, but I was more thinking of this: As I understand it people in the US need to work to get rid of their student debt or just to life. If in the US you'd want to attend the free School 42, you'd need to have money up front to do so. Because School 42 is not recognized by the government as a real school. Just attending School 42 is thus easier in many European countries enough of a social safety net exists which hopefully allow you to focus on just School 42.
This is a good idea, it was recently implemented where I live by a similar group of people. However, I think there should be some sort of tutoring, something like a book written by the school or something that takes you through the very basics because if I were for example to take the initiative to learn thermodynamics on my own I wouldn't know where to begin or how to proceed.
Funny you should use the example of thermodynamics, back when I was in my first year in high school I taugh myself high school thermodynamics to teach my sister for her college admission exam. I believe it was the only thing I taugh myself in high school, for the most part based in tests and their correction, but also on the handbook. I will be going to 42 next semester, then I'll know more about what kind of books or manuals they use, but as far as I am aware it is just problems and the whole internet. That is likely enough.
From tech companies and government probably... Technology advancing so fast... There's idiotic demand for developers in all skill levels and all kinds of fields... US literally needs for example 1million developers by 2020.. and nowhere to get em.. even my small country Esotnia needs 20k developers 2030... all the Unis IT degrees even cant produce graduates not even 10% by that year.. since 80% of IT students drop out first year... Coding is hard :>
I think part of the reason for the success of this idea is that it puts old wine in new bottles. It reminds me very much of the experience felt by students doing a PhD.
I did the Piscine, but failed. I had no C coding experience and did not pass one assignment or exam. I had a few roommates who worked together. They had passed almost every assignment and exam. They did not pass the Piscine. I had a friend who did the Piscine in 2016 with no C coding experience. He passed the Piscine, but I don't know what his experience was like. Alot of people there doing the Piscine had either prior coding experience or prior Piscine experience. Networking is a major component or else you will fall.
Yeah, don't be an island, and the single most important decision you make there if you are coming in without knowing anyone and with limited coding experience is picking your roommates correctly. If a potential roommate prospect has more experience than you, make sure they are somewhat selfless. If a potential roommate prospect has equivalent experience or less experience than you, make sure that you two get along and that they seem like a hard worker. You bunk with 3 other people, and you pick the Sunday of the start so get to the check-in early and start talking with people. The other people won't realize that they have to pick roommates there and then, but you will because you read this. During the piscine, don't expect questions answered or help from the staff because you won't get it. In fact, you won't even see them ever- they'll be ghosts. It was eerie. Make sure you have a sense of the Mac- I had a learning curve that I never fully got acquainted with. Go 24/7 coding. Make friends during meal breaks. The criteria for getting in isn't clear-cut but I've heard that you need to pass at least the final exam. I've seen people who got in that surprised me. I've seen people who didn't get in that surprised me (ie my two roommates who knew eachother previously and had prior coding experience & worked hard as hell but didn't network much). A third of pisciners are foreign, a third are from California attempting the piscine a second or third time, and a third are from other places in the States. Everybody can be social-engineered to be helpful so use that to your advantage because you'll need it.
I've considered it, but money is a factor and I'm near dead broke at the moment (minus broke if you include student loans) and I have a stable job in an industry that I've been very interested in for some time. If the stars align and I find myself financially solvent with passive income where I have a month or two straight to dedicate to studying for it and for whatever reason I find myself in a position where I would be willing to leave my current job, I just might. A few things I would do differently: have enough money to eat and not think about money, bring a car for easy trips into town + that car allows for easy networking if other people want to go into town, network everyday every minute, and come in prepared so I can somewhat stand on my own even if I fail some assignments. Currently, I'm in the distributed ledger space as a business development consultant for a systems integrator, so I'm learning javascript and solidity on my own a bit for smart contract development which I believe will allow me to progress into the field of distributed ledger programmers well. I think I have a greater respect for C after the Piscine, where I'm beginning to understand the importance for meticulous awareness about data storage of each byte. By the way, everybody isn't as chill as they seem in these promo vids: the piscine gets intense.
@@devonrusinek5807 Piscine you mean 1 month program? if i right understood the main attractive thing is that you build networking? how networking helps you at the moment? did you get fundamental knowledge in terms of technological skill set? This must be the proudest achievement of France for the last decades. The original parisian 42 school is a goddamn revolution in our archaic academic programs
The "piscine" and learning coding with peers has been present for decades in Epita though. And when I was there, I thought it was an "american" way of teaching, giving students autonomy instead of the passive way of teaching in french universities.
Really depends on the university, every case is different as they are autonomous. I've had two experiences with french universities as a computer science student, the first one we had many projects to do, the second one not so much. In both cases you have to be 100% autonomous as the teachers won't be behind you trying to help you succeed and not all teachers are good at teaching so you have to get the material by yourself. I agree it would be better throwing the old system in the trash, lecture courses are often boring and projects are much more interesting, also a mix of reseacher/professional would be great to have (I've only had researchers as teachers and I found they lack the job's market vision of computer science (seems logical)). Still if you want to get very advanced theoretical knowledge, universities are the best and you get to speak to top researchers in their respective fields but yeah, absolutely need deep changes to be relevant and interesting to more students.
