    Good review overall, and a good mic for sure, especially as a starter mic.. One thing (and I"ve had this mic) that's important to let viewers know that I think you didn't mention is that you absolutely need to have this mic on a mic stand or a boom arm because it's a terrible mic as a hand held. It picks up hand noise in a huge way, so while I'd recommend it as a very good mic to podcast with, you really need to have at least some kind of stand to have it on because if you podcast "on the go" with it and hold it in your hand, you're going to be dissapointed.

    I just today got this mic as a gift from one of my viewers as my Snowball Ice was just horrible. First I was going crazy about some weird static noise in one particular spot. Thought it's broken.
    It turned out that this ONLY happens when I have certain colors on my Logitech Keyboard activated! So dark red is okay, but yellow gives me a crazy static noise. Using it via USB for now until I get a mixer. Never thought that this could be an issue as I never had it! Maybe someone else has the same issue and is helped with this comment! ^^
    Using Voicemeeter Banana with an VST host on the Insert ASIO driver where I gate, compress, limit and eq. Then monitoring it via Asia4all. Works pretty good! Really happy and that for 80€ and even having an upgrade path yeah...a no brainer!

    • @FromTheHollow
      @FromTheHollow 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@habibullahsamander2798 last I used it it was having issues on Win 10 with the drivers, but that was over a year ago, I ended up upgrading to a Rode Podmic, but that is xlr only so you need an interface or a mixer.
      However, I can also say that while it was annoying, when it would have issues it would start working again after I would unplug it and plug it again. Didn't have any issues with the Q2U with an interface either though, just the Windows 10 drivers.
      Hope this helps. Also I should point out that despite that issue it's still a very solid mic and sounds great out of the box :). If you have other questions let me know

      Thanks for you helpfull answer. I don't have that much money to buy an interface with it. I just I need a microphone for TH-cam videos to sound good. I use Windows 10, would you recommend me this mic?
      I also have heard from some youtubers who say that some USB interfaces also have problem with Windows 10? Like Behringer UMC22. Is it right?
      Which budget USB mic or interface do you recommend to work fine with Windows 10?

    • @FromTheHollow
      @FromTheHollow 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@habibullahsamander2798 no problem. Yeah, I wasn't sure since everyone has different budgets. The Q2U is a good mic but I found the driver unreliability to be a bit of a deal breaker for me personally (I do different setups where I sometimes mic other people too, so it wasn't just my mic). Again though, that was over a year ago, drivers could have been updated and may be better now, I'm not sure.
      As far as budget interfaces I don't really have anything cheaper than the focusrite that I could recommend, but if you go that route it's worth saving the extra $20-$30 for the Motu M2 as it gives more gain (as well as slightly cleaner gain) and more headroom for your signal. It also gives loopback functionality which can be huge for a lot of musicians and podcasters. Not to mention the meters on the lcd screen are far more useful than the clip halo indicators of the focusrite. Also in regards to Behringer I've not used them but a couple of my friends have one and both of them needed another cable to get headphones to work properly for some reason...
      If you intend on staying on USB and it's in the budget I'd recommend the Elgato Wave as it also has software to process your mic, I think it comes with a mount and pop filter as well, really good value :). The Wave is a condenser however, which will be more sensitive to background noise than that of a dynamic mic.
      If you're wanting a really good USB dynamic mic I'd recommend the Shure MV7 (which can also be used xlr or XLR AND USB at the same time, which can be huge). It also has software to process the signal :) It is however considerably more pricey than the others.
      You might be able to find a reddit thread or something with more recent info on the Q2U drivers, they might have updated them.
      Hope this helps you :)

    I know this mic is from a few years ago and i was originally going to get the hyperx quadcast, but having that option to go from usb to xlr is amazing, especially for how much this microphone is. I think I'm actually going to get this one instead with the whole kit. The fact that the entire kit is $100 and the hyperx quadcast is stand alone $140 is the selling point. Even if i got a good boom arm for the hyperx quadcast is like another $40, but i gotta say saving about $80 is pretty freaking good. I think i know what i'm going to purchase now

    Hello, love your videos. Well made and you actually give educational professional advice. I am a ceramics instructor and as you know most schools are virtual right now. I am scrambling trying to set up an affordable decent recording system that I can record myself and clay demonstrations for my students. Currently, I am using a chrome book and streaming google meets with 30 students. It is horrendously horrible. I will be gutted by the end of the month if I continue to teach this way. Seriously, I have cried everyday and I had the worst first day of school in 15 years. Educational institutions do not have any money to support this online learning situation properly so I am purchasing it myself, which is fine. If it gets me through the day without crying because my google meets keep crashing then I’m in, it is all good. Back in June I saw into the future and figure this would happen. So I started looking for individuals who knew what they are talking about FOR REAL not just because they have a channel and that’s when I found you. At that time I purchased your suggested Sony A5100 camera, and a mounting system for it to record my demos. At this point I need lighting and a microphone. I want to get the samson q2u because it’s in my budget and it will meet my needs perfectly. However, everywhere I look says it’s on back order and I really need one now, lol, before I lose the rest of my mind and my students! Do you happen to know where I might find one that is in stock. Sorry so long, I just really need this microphone or something equivalent. Thank you!!!

    My subjective opinion is that this sounds like a DJ's mic to me for some FM pop music station.: tight, dry, highly bandwidth-limited. By contrast, the Blue Yeti USB, for example, sounds far more natural and open; has "air". Given than most people listen to content today on smartphones/tablets using cheap earbuds, I'm not surprised people like the sterile "punch" of this setup. It's obviously a personal thing.

    • @EposVox
      @EposVox  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's also in part the difference between a dynamic and condenser. The blue yeti is going to pick up all kinds of background sound, desk sound, and reflections from your desk/monitors that make it not super suited for desktop streaming scenarios

      @@EposVox Not if it is correctly mounted and used in cardioid mode, right? Of course, I accept that the quieter the environment, the better.

      Most people using desktop mics shouldn't be using condensers because they don't have treated rooms. The open airiness and all the reverb isn't so great when you can hear someone fart on the other side of their house.

    thanks for the recommendation....just ordered one of these for my game streaming(I keep discord headset mic separate from stream audio with voicemeter bananna). Can confirm that Focusrite is a PITA and do not want to deal with XLR for live applications, USB easy peasy :D

    Coming from your review of the Samson G Track Pro review, when you introduced this mic, you spoke behind it but it sounded the same, but in this review you did the same thing but it was noticeably quieter. So what video should I beleive? :D It seemed it has a 360 pattern with great noise reduction.
    Edit: my sleep deprived ass didn't realise it was a voice over of the video.

    Man those ear-phorias shot up in price! It’s like all the budget mics and audio interfaces jumped up $50, people are charging 90 for the um2 and the cheapest on amazon of any interface from that company is $118

    Great review. I got the mic because of this. May I ask you another quick question? What boom arm do you use? I am looking for a floor-standing boom, as my tables are too thick and can not hold a screwed-on version. Thank you very much and keep the great reviews coming.

    Thank you a ton for this video! Ended up deciding to sell me Blue Yeti and upgraded to the Samson Q2U - it's honestly SO MUCH BETTER. Without this video I probably wouldn't have bought it. You really sold me on the mic, quality and sound.

    Amazing how using the RE-20 is like turning on a radio-broadcaster _switch!_ But the Samson is more natural (though I would still mess with a little EQ on it). Different tools for different sonic goals!

  • @ednewmy

    I just got the Q2U. Generally impressed with it, but it doesn't handle plosives all that well. Even off axis as you suggest, and with an added pop filter, I still get a pretty hard plosive that needs editing out in post. Otherwise, for the price it's decent.

      Try to use Shure SMv7b WIndshield, the big one. I read it somewhere and ordered one. Haven't tried it yet but it comes from wish so who knows. Was sick and tired of the spedition being the same to the price, plus the risk of it being held back by the damn customs. Those fuc.... held back 3 vital shipments of mine, 2 years ago and I never got any email or anything. Then 7 months later I got one reminder that they were holding back one package. OHH so wonderful. Then I payed roughly half of the price I paid originally. And then I finally got it. /--8 months after ordering it from the US to Europe. Huraaah

    It is better than the Blue Yeti but I do hear the difference with a more professional microphone, it sounds slightly muffled (I listen with a HD 700), especially in USB mode which is why I wouldn't buy any USB only microphone. The bottomline: fine for podcasting, not good enough for singing. I am curious how a $100-200 microphone (connected to a good ADC and amplifier) from Audio-Technica or Sennheiser would fare in comparison.

    Why is this mic a fair bit cheaper in the US than it is in the UK? On Amazon US it's around $55, on Amazon UK the cheapest is £80. Sucks, I think I'd really like this one.

    I have the same Mic and the Audio. audio-technica 2100. I like the audio-technica better. I've recommended both to others. Now a friend of mine has the Samson and she gets a lot of pops on hers even with pop filter.

    • @danmagoo

      I also have both, and would say in the Q2U's favor that on Windows 8 or 10, it is significantly louder (needs less volume boost) than the AT2100; and I prefer the way it puts the headphone volume controls on the side instead of crowded into the bottom amid the USB and XLR ports. I also prefer the warmer tone of the Samson, but that's a matter of taste. And the Q2U is cheaper -- for now, although too many rave reviews like this may drive the price up, just like what happened with the AT2100. Anyway I agree both are good.

    it seems that the price of the Q2U went up recently. In my country, the mic (no headphone included) is just a little bit cheaper compared to the Shure SM57-LC and $20 cheaper than the Sennheiser e835. Should I buy the Q2U over the Shure and Sennheiser? I'm just using the mic for online teaching and my room is quite noisy. Thanks.

    I finally got a Samson Q2U and... somehow it captures way more background noise than my Blue Snowball... which is weird considering that's a condenser mic.
    Maybe I just don't know how to set it up properly, it sounds much better but I don't really like how you can hear every sound in the house.

    On this particular announcer's voice, I hear a spike in the high mids, that grates on my ears. [thru A.T. M40x headphones] I hear it on the E/V too, but not as bad - it balances better with the EV's lows. I'm pretty sure the prominence is a quality of his voice; but you have to choose the mic to match the voice, right?

      This is by far my biggest gripe with it as well, the fact that I have to constantly plug the USB cable back in for it to work after every single boot would be annoying enough, but the cable that comes with the microphone not liking being constantly plugged in and removed and therefore breaking was what really irked me.
      Still can't fault the microphone though, sounds bloody great for the price.
