Well, I have to give my respect to U Thant Myint Oo for analyzing Myanmar ethnic armed conflict situation with minimal bias. His grand father U Thant was also having close relationship with U Nu government. U Nu, General Aung San and General Ne Win are from Burmese Nationalist Organization (called "Doe Bama A See A Yone" meaning "Our Burmese Organization"). General Aung San(Father of Aung San Suu Kyi) promised ethnic people self-determination and federal union in order to get independent from British. Without that promises(Pinlone contract), Myanmar country map would not be as it is today. But U Nu and Gen Ne Win were not able to keep those promises and their radical Burmese nationalist view is causing the civil war in Myanmar until today(it is not dictatorship that is causing the civil war). Now Aung San Suu Kyi is also trying to do the same things like her father by promising Democracy Federal in Myanmar while she is defending military for genocide case of Rohingya Muslim in ICJ. Similar to her father, she need ethnic people supports in order to overcome genocide case in ICJ. Please remember, similar to Rohingya Muslim, ethnic people in Myanmar are also facing the same discrimination and oppression because of their ethnicity and religions. So ethnic people are having doubts when Aung San Su Kyi is trying to give similar promises that her father gave to ethnic people in order to get independence. Ethnic armed groups feel Aung San Su Kyi is not sincere on building Federal Democracy but to build Burmese dominated majority rule country. She is after all the generation of radical Burmese nationalist indeed.
@Ba Kheg994 Yeah! U Thant (Grandfather of U Thant Myint Oo, also Secretary general of UN) said the same things about Mon ethnic in Burma in UN. U Thant claimed "Mon doesn't exist in Burma anymore (Which is not correct)". Mon were denied to establish Mon State in Burma during those days. Luckily, There was this Thai Minister who was ethnic Mon descend heard that speech by U Thant and corrected him. You can't bullsh*t around the world in this Internet era. The only ethnic people that can best sympathize with Rohingya Muslim situation in Burma is Mon ethnic historians. That Minister is Anand Panyarachun. Burma can also learn from Anand on how he proposed/handled Thai southern Muslim violence situation. In the international arena, Anand Panyarachun is a trustee of the U Thant Institute and a board member in many foundations. He is also a member of the Advisory Group of Anti-Corruption Issues for the East Asia and Pacific Region of the World Bank and the Advisory Council of Transparency International (TI). He has also served as UNICEF Ambassador for Thailand since 1996.
@Ba Kheg994 I don't know Rohingya history but I can relate the situation of Rohingya people with Mon people. PLEASE NOTE: Arakan(Rakhine) Army AA is not at war with Rohingya people despite their people are at greater risk but they are at war with Burmese Military. Mon people(and many ethnics people) are not at war with Thailand/India/China/Bangladesh but with Burmese Army. The world know need to know why it is happening! Similar to Rohingya people Mon people were also being committed genocide by Burmese King Aung Zay Ya. Mon people were also fleeing to Thailand to take refuge from man slaughter and genocide. King Aung Zay Ya invaded Thailand(Siam) because Thai King was accepting those Mon refugees and giving them shelters. Those Mon people who lived in Dagon(Yangon) and Hantarwaddy(Pegu) were also facing the same faith those Rohingya are facing right now. Myanmar Defend Service Academy (DSA) is still using those old tactic and praising/obsessed with this king Aung Zay Ya and NLD is also protecting such nationalist extremists. Burmese historians/Soldiers are so obsessive with this King Aung Zay Ya, What is wrong with me to get obsessive with those history from the perspective of Mon, Rakhine(Arakan),other ethnic people and Thai people?
@Ba Kheg994 I am not historian and don't have such knowledge. It is not my profession. But my words here are just verbal knowledge passing down to me from several generations(at least 2 generations). Luckily I have internet to expand that knowledge to connect the dots which my parents and grand parents lack due to their limited language ability and lack of reading materials.
@Ba Kheg994 Rohingya issue can only be solved by Arakan(Rakhine) people and Rohingya people themselves. None of our business and none of central government business and none of Myanmar military business. Arakan(Rakhine) people and Arakan Army will decide what is best for them. Arakan people have been living with muslims side by side for centuries and they know their situation best. So just stop interfering with Arakan people affairs. That is what Arakan people and all other ethnics people want. "Self determination and federalism"
Yeah! Rakhine and Muslim issue is exactly like what British are doing when they are colonizing Burma. They imported a lot of immigrant into Burma and oppressing and impoverishing her citizens. That is why "ဒို့ဗမာ အစည်းအရုံး" started their nationalist campaign. If Burma government and army is doing similar things to ethnic people, they will definitely face the same faith that British were facing. If "ဒို့ဗမာ အစည်းအရုံး" can achieve their nationalist goal against British empire and get their independence, why can't ethnic people achieve their nationalist campaign or federalism or (worse case scenarios, "Independence") against Myanmar government and army? I don't want independence either because it is inconvenient for me now. But there is always worse case scenarios. Everything can happen when the oppression of ethnic people are still continuing. Remember! British only ruled Burma approximately 100 years. Why do you think ethnic people can't achieve their nationalist goal or federalism or independence within such time frame?
