Yeah, it is a fantastic road to come down. About 10kms of almost unused (new freeway bypasses it) road in good condition and steep :) It wasn't as fast as we expected ie 50 km/h rather than 60+. Fast enough!
I had a look on Google Earth, looks fantastic. Some friends are in Adelaide at the moment and have done a few rides up in the hills and were very impressed with the place.
I am beginning to understand what you need that Schlumpf drive for at 4:44. I wouldn't be able to do 2 kph on a diamond frame bicycle. And Mrs. SA Triker seems to enjoy the uphill as much as you do :) 31:12 I remember seeking shelter in a downpour like this. The bridge was somewhat narrow, and the rain came in horizontally. It was a real thunderstorm with the emphasis on storm. So you did everything right. And contrary to popular belief here in Europe, you do have mountains in Australia. Thumbs up!
On a diamond frame, when you are tired or the hill is too steep you might walk but it isn't often convenient to walk a trike so trike riding necessitates a different way of thinking. Instead of walking, you preferably just choose a lower gear... Also I find that 'mashing' the pedals (high force/low rpm) can put a lot of pressure on knees and so if you have lower gears you can keep spinning which is more comfortable. The really big advantage of the mountain drive is that you don't ever get immobilised, you can always get a low enough gear to climb out. Some steep carparks or steep ramps can be 45 degrees (it seems) and it is a luxury to just have the gearing and yes, balance isn't a problem on a trike at low speed like it is with a diamond frame. In a sense, if the gearing is right, if you were blindfolded you probably couldn't tell if you are going uphill or on a flat road ie you just find a cadence that feels right for you and if you happen to be going up hill then the only difference with a hill is that your groundspeed is slower than on the flat but the concept of 'hills being hard' doesn't apply on a trike unless you want to climb fast.

Thanks for your kind comment! The great thing about trikes is that they are stable when you climb ie if you need to ride slowly there are no balance issues so you can use really easy gears. My advice is to get much lower (&higher) gearing than standard manufacturers offer. I'm quite strong physically but I found on some hills I couldn't push the pedals around on a standard geared trike. Low gearing is very important on a trike because you don't ever want to get off and push (like you would do on a bike) - need lower gears. Since trike can be a bit heavier than bikes, you may climb a little slower than on a bike but you will go faster down hill and on the flats than on a bike due to better aerodynamics ie recumbent. It evens out. Good luck with yours..
SA Triker Thanks man... I am looking at buying the Terra Trike Rover www.terratrike.com/rover.php as it is a beginner trike and would suit me as a beginner at this. I do not have your physical strength so I will ask them about the low gearing as there are some vicious hills to climb around here. Would you recommend an internal or external shifting?

Definitely a nice climb to get the blood pumping! I ride my two wheeled bike up there often and try to beat my personal record each time! For some reason once I get up the bike path to the side of the freeway and past devil's elbow I just settle into things and no longer feel breathless. From then on I just cruise up at a decent speed. I always find it weird that I'm more comfortable once the real climbing starts! I've never ridden a recumbent trike. Would you say they are harder or easier to climb with. I'd love to know as they certainly look very comfy! Great video!
Is it possible to descend on the same bike path you ascended on, or is that path a "One Way" only? Are you forced to descend partly on the road like it seemed like you did?

Hey thanks David, earlier videos were frame mount gopro hero 3 silver but I got a lot of unpleasant background noise via the frame. This video was helmet mounted gopro 3+ silver 1080/25fps and the mic faces backwards out of the wind, less noise. On this ride I also brought along a tiny JVC camcorder with a 40x optical zoom which I used as a hand held on occasions. No zoom is one of the limitations of the gopro but gopro is very clear and has great wide angle. Thanks for the feedback. My son teases me by saying I've got addicted to watching trike videos.. fun to see where other people ride their trikes, different scenery etc. Cheers
SA Triker Sure makes a difference with the wind gone. Still going through my mind whether to get a trike yet. Just now while waiting on my health get better I am using an e-bike but although I don't use the throttle much I have to use the lowest assist setting as without the electrics it is like pedalling through a mud trail with the friction and weight of the hub. Will see how I go as for now building up a touring bike with drop bars, as I find the flat bars are giving me gyp with my wrists, Although I could shove butterfly bars on that might help. But sitting back looks so much easier, although probably different muscle groups come into play on a trike.

I just use MS Movie Maker to edit the GoPro/Camcorder video and do the captioning. I use Endomondo app on my phone to track/record the GPS data (speed, location, altitude) during the ride and then I bring the video and gps data together in sync in 'Dashware' software which can also overlay the speedo. (Bit of fun and not too time consuming to do once you do a couple)
That is the only thing I am not sure about a trike for is if it rains. I suppose there are pros and cons in everything. where an upright may be better if it is raining . I got my waterproofs though. Can't say I have seen many recumbents out in the bad weather.
Hi Bill, as social riders we try not to ride much when wet, just for fun/comfort reasons but in my experience there is not much difference between a trike and DF bike in terms of 'getting wet', despite the different riding angle. In both cases, If it rains and you don't have a spray jacket, you will get wet :) On a trike, the front fairing eg Windwrap or Streamer plus weather proof clothing would be quite comfortable if you had to ride a lot in the cold & rain although a log fire and your favourite glass of something is probably a better solution for these days?.
I have a suggestion on the camera. Take the camera off your head and put it on a trike mounted pogo stick that you can rotate. Your videos will be smoother. I started getting sea-sick watching. Otherwise, I loved the country. Thanks. Bill in Colorado, USA
Yes, hill climbing on a recumbent is no fun. On a two wheeled one like I ride, its even harder. But going fast downhill is easier, leaning into corners. Now, I know you guys dong carry rain gear, but do you carry anything with you? Like a repair kit?
Hi James, yes the seat provides a good attachment point for some sort of 'saddle bag'. I use a bag designed for bicycle handle bar mounting but I put it on the seat back. In it I carry a spare tube, adhesive puncture patches, pump, multi tool, battery pack etc. The rear carrier can also be used of course to support panniers for the other essential items eg glasses for emergency wine tasting etc :)
