    I believe I recall my Mother having a Jackie Gleason album. Now I know he was probably the composer of the music.

      The way that I read, he wasn't musically trained, but he described exactly what he wanted, the mood, feeling, tempo, etc and an arranger would put the music on charts.

    ALL of Jackie Gleason's music was awesome, and relaxing.As a child, I watched his late 1960's TV show when new.It was a variety show with singing and comedy acts.The cast of Honeymooners was on it.It was funny, and good entertainment.

    Perfect example of someone coming up from absolutely NOTHING but tragedy and a refusal to fail.

    • @musicom67

      I'd definitely agree... Jackie working as a burlesque comic in the day ('40's) was a tragedy. Worse were those who still performed through the porno '70s. At least the music combos with the rusty trombones and boas were gone by then too...

    Tenor sax soloist looks & sounds like Artie Drellinger. In his bio he said he played in the studio band of all the Ed Sullivan & Jackie Gleason shows. A few years after this 1960 show - he was on the CBS TV Keefe Brasselle Show - he played dixieland clarinet every week and sounded a lot like Benny Goodman (he was considered one of the top Goodman sound-alikes). It was a summer replacement show and also on stage in the band soloing were trumpeter Pee Wee Erwin & New York trombonist Morty Bullman. Jimmy Crawford was a great New York drummer too. Did lots of albums with arranger Glenn Osser. Notice there were 8 trombones and 8 trumpets - often 4 muted and 4 "open". Just like one of Gleason's brass LP albums. Looked just like Buddy Morrow on one of the trombone parts.

      So you mean to say Jackie got paid, in this 'episode', as a producer and a maestro-conductor and a 'composer' and a publisher and a guest star and a...(also was acting on Broadway at the time) - Kate probably got chump change while Jackie cleaned out the makers of Anacin on Kate's own show LOL. By the way, the real conductor was Jimmy Crawford...

    I love everything about Jackie. I'm not sure if dancing along with the rhythm is actually "conducting", unlike classical where the Maestro give cue to each part of the Orchestra. Hrte, the band relies more upon the written music. But, writing as Jackie did, is a testament to "thre Great one.". RIP 🙏 my friend.

    • @musicom67
      @musicom67  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gleason, in this appearance, had to sell his Capitol record album where he had to recoup the scale wages for the "110 piece orchestra". Remember, this a GLEASON appearance on Kate's Show. Sammy was probably playing a nightclub that night... Don't forget they were all work-for-hires...

      Jackie Gleason’s variety shows usually introduced Sammy Spear and his Orchestra and Sammy was quickly viewed wearing his crazy jackets. And Jackie would say “ A little traveling music “. Also Sammy was always acknowledged at the end of each show’s credits also credits on the honeymooners. Didn’t Sammy write the honeymooners theme song?

    We may never have such again; the musicians are gone, and the new ones have not the soul. These guys knew how to rip: in 2021 who knows how to rip? Gleason never received the recognition for music he deserved. Such a pity the recording tech then was primitive, for we hear no fidelity.

      @@musicom67 I just posted who the Tenor sax player might be. Sounds like him & looks like him and his Bio said he did all Ed Sullivan Shows and all the Jackie Gleason shows including the Honeymooner's. It's ARTIE DRELLINGER - good Tenor player & a Benny Goodman sound-alike on clarinet - played on CBS TV for the whole summer series in 1962 or '63 on the Keefe Brasselle Show - I have a few old reel audio tapes of that show. Artie & Pee Wee Erwin (trumpet) played dixieland solos every week with Keefe cheering them on. If you look at old TV Guides - there were about 30 shows on TV every week with a live band or orchestra. Those were the days!

    As a composer/bandleader Jackie missed his prime calling. I honestly think he could have given Glen Miller, Artie Shaw and even the Dorseys a run for their money back in the day. “Tollgate Treat” is my favorite Jackie song and it’s too bad that album is not on iTunes. I would get it in a heartbeat.
