There seem to be some incongruencies in the stories between here and the bedtime one in the city of wizards update. He doesn't seem to be broke (hell, it's even a LORD), and 100% doesn't look like one that would fall to greed so easily, so there had to be some external factor involved. Maybe what happened is that abalone stole the pearl or managed to convince oyster to sell it, and in either case he feels ashamed to go see white pearl again, which caused her to go dark.

We all know what's probably coming up soon, Lord Oyster's gonna betray White Pearl, taking advantage of her trust and frail heart. I really look forward to see how dark they'll make it since it's safe to assume Black Pearl still resides in what was once Tearcrown.
Considering she attacked another mermaid during the bedtime story, I guess the other mermaids are no longer alive, and if otherwise they are far away from her, tearcrown being no more. Poor crimson coral...
