    Rick this is really a goldmine! Thank you so much! Do you have a video discussing time/practice management? Trying to cover different styles of music, different instruments, different techniques etc. can be really overwhelming. It seems like you have a good balance of all of those so I would love to hear your approach and thoughts. Many thanks! Ben

      Hi Ben
      I am working on one now and I will post it soon. I have gotten many requests for that so I want to make sure I do it right.
      Thanks

    Rick - Just discovered this channel recently and really enjoying these videos, incredibly awesome work and it's clear you are an amazing and accomplished drummer/musician. These are great exercises, some of them I am familiar with "as is" or with variations. I have two questions - from your traditional and relaxed playing videos, it looks like your left pointer finger gets involved sometimes by curling over the top of the stick and helping to catch the stick on way up and bounce down. However, I could be mistaken, but in almost this entire video I only see your left pointer riding alongside at most to help stabilize the stick at times. So I'm wondering if there are points where you actively engage the left pointer - it seems though that your thumb and wrist are doing > 90% of the work in terms of moving the stick, am I correct? Also, for the third beat of the paradiddle, the bounce accent with the R, you seem to allow the bounce to come up very high, is it not better to catch this at 1-2 inches above the head, then let it drop from there? I was taught to have the unaccented notes as close to the head as possible, so as to enable a high contrast between the accented and unaccented notes. Thanks again. I will try and email you about your sticks and books.

      Hi Ralph
      I use that finger at times for clinches but it is mostly used to stabilize the stick. The bounce height depends on your tempo. If you are slower the bounce will come up higher and if you are faster it will be lower. It's all about the motion of the stick and leaving it free to bounce. The fingers reinforce this.

    Rick, thank you so much for sharing! I love these etudes/exercises! And, it is awesome how you get into the details of how to execute the exercises (bounce/wrist/fingers, etc.) I do have a question about your approach to playing really fast passages at p or pp. Example: Measures 16-17 in Delecluse #9; I tend to end up using a lot of wrist (for left hand) and feeling a little tight in the left hand. I had to play this for an audition 34 years ago and I was practicing 10 hours a day back then, so probably had a looser wrist then... but just wondering if I should be trying to use more fingers or bounce more with a really fast passage like that at p or pp.

      Hi Dave
      For those etudes I use a loose wrist and not too much fingers. There is a subtle bounce. You could also try some very soft double strokes to play the complex pp passages.
      I do use those for parts of #9 and I found it was more reliable when I was doing auditions.
      Thanks
      Rick

      Hi Doug
      You can take a 1/2 hour or an hour lesson. If you gather all of you questions we should be able to answer them within that time frame.

    Okay....8 and 9 are challenging. but you dont spend alot of time on them. ie- slowed down. Is there another video where you show them slowed down?

    • @rickdior
      @rickdior  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Doug
      You can slow anything down on youtube. Just go to the video settings and select the speed you want the video to play. I use that with students all the time.
