  • Quick overview and sound examples of the Oberheim Matrix 6 synthesizer made in the 1980s.
All sounds in the background music (expect for drums) are from the Matrix 6.

Love how the voiceover sounds like an old-school commercial. Makes me wanna buy it a tiiiiny bit more. 😁
That’s what 90’s consumer culture conditioning will do to ya I guess. Haha!
Anyway, excellent video! Thanks for showing a little range of what it can do beyond just brass and pad sounds like most TH-cam demos seem to focus on.

Thanks for the video. You did a nice job, though I am not so sure about your characterization of the instrument as "'80s" sounding. A tool is a tool. i don't think of my garden rake as 1100 bc technology. It''s just a tool. It can sound '80s, but it can sound like something else too, especially if you avoid presets and program your own sounds.
Hint #1: If you have an iPad, the Patch Touch app has a good graphic patch editor for the Matrix 6 and the Matrix 1000. You'll need a iPad to midi interface. There is also a very fun random patch generator in this app.
Hint #2: The Matrix 6 keyboard has midi release velocity, a midi control that seems to have been neglected in later years. Because of the Matrix's flexible modulation capabilities, it can do things like change the envelope release times based on how quickly you lift your fingers from the keys. e.g. A pad can have a long decay when you lift your fingers slowly and a short/quick decay when you lift your fingers quickly, even from sustained notes/chords.
The keyboard also has (mono) pressure sensitivity. The internal software allows the direction that the paddles work to be reversed. There is also a tracking generator onboard, which turns out to be quite useful in changing the controller response curves, etc. I'm not a huge fan of the Matrix 6's mono mode, as it does not give you that fat OBX mono sound. However, turning off one of the two oscillators for mono patches helps to make the sound less comb filtery. Like other instruments of its pre-D50 time, it has no reverb or delay, so use pedals. I also found a Rat 2 distortion to work better than a Boss overdrive, so do "shop around" for a good fit if you need distortion.
There are great analogue synths out now, but If you can get a Matrix 6/1000 for a good price, it can add a nice analogue layer to your digital sounds.

Agreed! It can make so many different sounds, and while good for getting "80s sounding" sounds, it's great for all sorts of tones.
The apps are nice to use and make it so much easier to program! Great hint with the midi release velocity and great info!

I think it sounds very 80s.. always distinctively retro - which is not a bad thing, but I find it hard to get modern sounds out of it. Well, there are other synths for that task :)
