I loved that they embraced the cinematic and didn't pretend "Wrestling is real". They made basically live action Mortal Kombat meets WWE. That is what the future of pro wrestling should have become once it became known that all the fights are fixed.
That's the dumbest thing an alleged wrestling fan could possibly say. Just because kayabe died, it didn't mean suspension of disbelief died with it. Watching predetermined exhibitions is a lot more realistic than watching a fking live action mortal kombat movie. What next? They gonna do their fatalities, animalities, and babalities? Stick to watching cartoons, dude.
It's honestly jaw dropping how many wrestlers that were in LU are now big names across the globe. Just shows that with proper management it could have been a major hit.
I loved this freaking show. It's unique blend of cinematic storytelling with classic pro wrestling action was groundbreaking. I'd love for another promotion to rise up and try this type of approach again. This is something that's sorely needed in the business right now.
One thing I loved about Lucha Underground was it stayed in one spot. Or stayed put for a season or two and didn't move around. I think that's probably better for the wrestlers, less stress going across country, but also because the temple itself felt like a character. With the focus on stories and the specific stunts they did by using the area I could buy the place was essentially a sacrificial site and out for blood.
No it sucks, the wrestlers don't have to travel much but it makes the show looks like a sloppy show, a division 2, touring and being in big arenas is the best thing for wrestling by far it makes it look major league
@@Kr4ShSkeL ecw was in one place for awhile and it was pretty damn cool. you cant always just look at what makes it “major league” I obviously understand why they gotta be on the road in certain companies but you gotta remember these guys are people as well. he’s just pointing out the obvious that it was probably really nice for some of the guys with family and such.

I really miss Lucha Underground and was sad to see that go. It was a breath of fresh air in a sport that was kinda stale at the time. Excellent documentary.
Man, I remember watching Season 1 and 2 back in the day when Lucha was going up against golden era NXT. You could just feel the passion and love for the craft with every match and it has some great storytelling with the more cinematic vignettes. Part of me always hopes Robert Rodriguez or whoever had creative control for LU reaches out to the promotions mentioned here (except WWE, since Vince doesn’t like to play nice with others😂) and bring it back with a cross promotional event. On another note, it’s pretty depressing that when it came to covering the LU alumni in WWE all I could do was just shake my head and think “they’re holding all these guys back”. Doesn’t help a majority of them are gone from the company now😔 Regardless, Lucha Underground will always live on in our memories and with each of the amazing workers🔥
Chavo Guerrero was one of the producers & basically taught a movie film crew how to film a wrestling show. Most of the talent had creative freedom on their character's back stories. Swerve Strickland said he came up with Killshot's backstory using his military experience as a base for the character.
What I loved about LU was how they modernized wrestling with the stories, both lifelike and scifi both. They knew that everyone knows wrestling is scripted and predetermined, so they added the cool and outlandish stories to spice things up. That is something a lot of current companies aren't doing. Others are still trying to act like wrestling is real which takes away from the entertainment aspect when we know it's all fake.
Lucha underground was addictive to watch and had great characters and stories. Son of havoc and Mack was dope, the story between prince puma and Rey mysterio put on a awesome match, just so much awesomeness.

And they have the actor for Dario back, as well as Muertes and Jeff Cobb (who was Matanza) in addition to a couple others.

After the death of Eddie Guerrero, I stepped away from wrestling for a very long time. Gradually, eventually, I started poking around in forums and subreddits again, and that was when I first started hearing some rumblings of this new show - finally, after it had been on for a few months, I decided to start catching up from the beginning and once I saw Chavo Guerrero show up, I knew there was gonna be something special about that show. It singlehandedly got me back into wrestling, 1000%.
Lucha Underground was the one show I could get invested in. I dropped off of WWE due to the PG era, and coming back, it still feels too clean, soulless. AAA felt like Central American WWE and NJPW is too outrageous for me. Lucha Underground was full of heart, and knowing that Robert Rodriguez was the producer, it made sense that it was vibrant, full of life and outrageously serious. Knowing more of the behind the scenes stuff though, it's sad that it had to fizzle out instead of dying when it was at its peak. This show will have a place in my heart for igniting my love for pro wrestling.
Azteca underground debuts today! I am excited to see how it will be. It's a shame like Lucha Underground couldn't survive for it made me like Pro Wrestling again. The one thing that hurt any idea is either lack of money or greed. I believe Lucha was hit with both and the Wrestlers suffered. I'm glad they were smart enough to fight back. The plans of ever bringing Lucha Underground back would not be wished. The name is poison in the world of Pro Wrestling. It would not be worst the time or the effort. It had a good run. It's over! Was awesome growing up in high school watching lucha underground! Ik exactly what you meant about being excited every week for the next episode! It was one of the most Talented rosters and amazing atmospheres I’ve seen in wrestling
About Season 5 of Lucha Underground well I wouldn't count on that but what Dave Meltzer was talking about is this MLW side project Azteca Underground what I heard is done by Konan who is big on Lucha Libre. What MLW has been doing lately is adding their own twist to what Dario(Cesar Duran) has been up to since Lucha Underground ended. Azteca Underground might not be much of what alot of OG LU fans want as some kind of return. Good video.
Great points. It's a shame it ended and most likely will never return in the way the original Lucha Underground was presented, which is sad as a huge fan of the show.
I loved the fact that we were getting to see Wrestlers who wrestled for Professional Wrestling Promotions and Independent Professional Wrestling Promotions up and down the State of California. Lucha Underground also allowed Wrestlers to show off the skillets they had built through years of hard work.
I loved LU. About twelve years ago I was sitting around one day wondering what ECW would look like of it came around today and decided it would have presented wrestling as an underground sort of fight club so when I saw LU for the first time, I was hooked. I remember during the build to Ultima Lucha 1, every match seemed like a big deal and I wanted to see every single match. I wouldn’t want it to come back though unless absolutely everyone was back and they picked up where they left off. I want to know what happened after the Barrett’s character arrived and Dario was resurrected.
Awesome video , my favourite promotion of all time and IMO the best wrestling show of all time..the writing , the visuals just sets it apart from everything else. but when you talk about the part and what happened and go into why it ended...there is a few key very important things missing , most notably the hiatuses in between seasons which is what played a HUGE part in why the talents were upset with the contracts because they were waiting around for like a year and incase of season 4 it was a 2yr wait before the show came back and with no LU it made no sense for them to stay locked to the show and this was brought on by the one that caused all of those issues but is rarely mentioned and this is Univision , the parent company of El Rey Network at the time and the one who gave them the money which was then used to budget their shows , Univision is really what caused the fall of Lucha Underground because they cut the budget in season 4 which forced LU to do what would take 3-4 months down to having to shoot an entire show in a single month.
This makes me want to go back and watch Lucha Underground. I had just got into wrestling around the time it started and it might have flown under my radar. Now that I'm more well-versed and aware of all the different promotions out there, I want to see what I missed. I appreciate you covering all the wrestlers in LU and where they ended up, it added a lot of depth to the video. Well done.
So Lucha Underground was a story based company that showed over the top wrestling with sometimes goofy, heart warning and chaotic moments shoved in; all to please devoted fans yet while being notorious for not paying talent. Sooooo.... ECW?
This was an amazing show. I watched it all the time. Prince Puma became a star. John Morrison was FINALLY utilized the way he should have. So many of the other characters seemed poised to break out. This was must see TV. Like all good things - it wasn't meant to last. Too many people have been brainwashed by Vince to like utter trash like Roman Reigns. Unless the WWE is sold & broken up I don't know if we will ever get good, long lasting wrestling again. We have to really try as fans to teach our children & friends what GOOD wrestling is, & not to tolerate being around those who support WWE. This is war.
It seems Dreamer's days in the doghouse are over already. I imagine Flair's alleged indiscretions are nearly forgotten now too. Wrestling fans have the longest memories for kayfabe but seem willing to look the other way about a lot things that happen in the real world. Steve Austin's reputation for instance has never suffered at all from the actions of the real life Steve Williams.
The downfall was when, Vampiro got all over the product, Sexy Star became champ (who broke Rosemary’s arm on purpose) and signing Hernandez, who still had a contract with Impact. I stopped watching, after season 3.
Great video my guy. The clips you used and how they were put together is fantastic. You have a real talent for writing and it shows with all the talking you did in this video
I liked how Lucha Underground had that weird background story going throughout the show. It really felt like it added to the show, and it made the show way different compared to the standard wrestling production. I also have to agree with you on Prince Puma, he was the main reason I got into watching Lucha Underground, he was an awesome wrestler, and kinda felt like the Heart of the show. Also I had no clue the Thunder Rosa was Kobra Moon, that threw me off, and from watching the clips you showed of her character really made sense.
Easy answer. LU was that great when Impact/TNA died (end of 2013, beginning of 2014 when AJ/Sting quit because of the pay cuts) and before AEW appeared (with All In as consideration, let's say in 2018) and Impact went back to be part of AXS group. El Rey Network never really believed in the project so much, and it's a terrible decision for them, as it was the project which was giving them the most of ratings.
The mid 2010s were a great time to be a wrestling fan. WWE was pushing a new generation, NXT was the hottest promotion in America, TNA was giving the stars of the 2020s their last polish before they jumped to WWE, ROH was at its height with a ton of the future AEW roster, NJPW was breaking into the larger western wrestling fan's larger consumption habits thanks to the massive cultural moment that Bullet Club was, Lucha Underground was giving a whole new take on wrestling that is the most innovative wrestling show in history, ICW, RevPro, and PROGRESS were flying the flag internationally for the British scene, and EVOLVE and PWG were at their heights as well.
Sorry for the late reply only just found this documentary: I feel like Jeff Cobb could have had a huge vault in popularity if he’d kept the Matanza gimmick in transition from LU. Ricochet almost immediately parlayed the puma role into his Osprey feud which got him noticed by the non lucha wrestling fans. But ultimately now you’re 100% correct but immediately following its end it was Johnny Mundo and Brian Cage that got all the big spots in international bookings.
If it'd lasted and they'd been able to make a game, I bet it would've rivaled the SmackDown vs. RAW titles from the 90's (when Yuke's still had them, and they were actually FUN to play)
Lucha Underground got me back into pro wrestling when I first saw it back in 2014 on the El Rey Network, then stopped watching & went back to watching short clips when it folded. Lucha Underground was way, way ahead of it's time.
I loved that Lucha underground was like a fight club, you had established popular indie guys and unknown guys coming in wearing masks to hide their identity as if to save there reputations as pro wrestlers
Continue to amaze audiences with unmatched athleticism and enduring splendor all they had to do is make up a women's title division for the company 😎🔥🎸💯🎚️
I sadly found out about LU when they already shut it down but that didnt stop me from watching so many matches that I could find on the internet. It was beyond entertaining and its sad that it didnt last!
After WWE and WCW fell apart at the seams with so many greats leaving, the fights looking less exciting and the fake McMahon Family Drama at that time (specifically where Shane "took control" of WCW and Stephanie took over ECW;) my love for wrestling died for several years. Then, I came upon a review made by ERod: The Blockbuster Buster talking about something called Lucha Underground; a new wrestling series set around Mexican Masked Wrestling...and I was intrigued. After watching the review, I went to check out the show for myself online (because i didn't know if we had El Rey Network on our channel list) and...I LOVED IT! Everything about LU was so much better than what WE had! Better wrestlers, better stories, better conflicts, better athletic skills and Dario's role was far more charismatic than what Vince gave us. Then, After the events of Ultima Lucha 4...both the show AND the El Rey Network just died out without explanation
Man I came here to relive LU, and you did a great job taking me back. But you made a comment that was off to me. You said when you got back into wrestling in 2015 via NXT one of your favorite characters was Solomon Crow. How? He debuted and did absolutely nothing? I only remember seeing him one time. Unless you were at the house shows watching him job to Bull Dempsey.
I loved this show wish it would of been able to stick around. Was hoping AEW would tinker a bit with the cinematic stuff at least 1 match a week or just with certain wrestlers. It would be fun to get stuff like that for people like Abadon, HOB, even Matt Hardy could of did better with it had it not been a pandemic. Could be something they could do on rampage since it's taped
Amazing show. Too bad it was short lived. If you want something close to this, MLW has some of the same characters on their show, and is incorporating El Jefe in their storyline
The only way I could see this amazing product coming back is under the wing of another promotion. If it’s a side product under something like aew the wrestlers can work more than the one hour tv show and actually earn a living. The other plus side to that is they can mix and match talent on the shows.
I fell out of pro wrestling around 2010 once I started getting older and I realized that WWE was moving towards more pg friendly content. Started watching again in 2021 when I discovered AEW and shortly after I found out about Lucha Underground and holy shit is it awesome. Wish it was still around, love how they combined the cinematic storytelling that made them so unique with their wrestling. It really felt like an actual episodic tv show because of that.
Im an oldschool traditional wrestling fan since 84 . I normally would hate something like this . But i loved it !!!! Its NOT pro wrestling at all in my veiw of what that term means . But ... It was fantastic fast paced action like a video game with wild stories to match . It was its own thing . However if i had my druthers , pro wrestling would be just that . Pro wrestling . Yet there wasnt much good pro wrestling mainstream at the time in the states . So i really enjoyed this !!! Almost like a alternate universe of wrestling ! Counter acting my love of serious sports based mat wrestling as in 80s NWA , Mid South and 90S AJPW ( my fave) . But i had a blast watching it ! Jim Cornette blasts it , and i get why . I just viewed it as something different . It still beat whatever WWE was doing !!!!!
Lucha Underground was the first wrestling show I ever watched. I had no real interest in wrestling before, but I used to listen to a podcast where they'd occasionally talk about Lucha Underground, and they made it sound so gloriously absurd that I always assumed they were talking about a cartoon. Literally, as soon as I found out it was live action, I was like "This sounds like the best thing ever" 😆 So at the weird age of 26 or whatever it was, I was converted to a wrestling fan overnight by the sheer badassery and "weirdo charisma" of Drago, Sexy Star and Vampiro ✊ Honestly, I kinda wish I'd gotten into wrestling during the attitude era when all my mates were obsessed with the people's elbow and whatnot... There's a lot to catch up on 😦😆

Well done.
Simply one of the best Wrestling Documentaries I've ever seen keep up the Great work 👍🏽
Wow that's so awesome thanks mate, what topic would you like to see next?
So Lucha Underground was a story based company that showed over the top wrestling with sometimes goofy, heart warning and chaotic moments shoved in; all to please devoted fans yet while being notorious for not paying talent.
Sooooo.... ECW?
Lucha Underground was special it's one of my favorite shows of all time and it was the coolest thing I saw from pro wrestling in a long time
This was an amazing show.
Good point mate
The downfall was when, Vampiro got all over the product, Sexy Star became champ (who broke Rosemary’s arm on purpose) and signing Hernandez, who still had a contract with Impact.
I stopped watching, after season 3.
One of the best shows in the business. Sad that it went out the way it did.
I agree mate
I loved Lucha Underground! It was so fun. I miss is ;n;
I agree! Hope it comes back
Thanks for the video! Its nice that Lucha Underground still has a fanbase!
agreed...at the time, it was the only wrestling show I actively wanted to watch as it aired and not on dvr
I'm kinda proud of myself to be able to recognize a lot of these wrestlers from the Intro narration. All great wrestlers.
I'm watching some old episodes right now, I love the production values.
Luchasaurus was my very first AEW action figure purchased! Such a nice figure
Good choice!
I’d say the Lucha Bros were probably the biggest names coming out of Lucha Underground
Hard to argue
Sorry for the late reply only just found this documentary:
I feel like Jeff Cobb could have had a huge vault in popularity if he’d kept the Matanza gimmick in transition from LU.
It was so bad azzzzzz...I miss that show..The creative was off the hook 💯
It really was. Apart from early days NXT and AEW it was my favourite thing in all of wrestling. So sad it only lasted 4 years
I loved that Lucha underground was like a fight club, you had established popular indie guys and unknown guys coming in wearing masks to hide their identity as if to save there reputations as pro wrestlers
They have it on tubi
Lucha Underground was the best pro wrestling show I have seen in over 40 years as a fan of pro wrestling.
It really did have something extra special huh?
This is the most underrated wrestling for me, with a nice storyline
Loved lucha underground
That part about Joey Ryan though 😂🤣🤣🤣 savage af.
Did I lie? 😏
This was the only wrestling available free on cable that I enjoyed last decade.
It really was excellent
Amazing mini doc loved this and miss lucha underground 😢
I’m making another video on the topic soon!
Lucha Underground was a True Treasure it Brought Back Wrestling!!! It's Wrong that's Gone and it Should Come Back
Season 2, when Mil Muertes took over the arena was pretty cool. I think the same should be done on Raw with the Fiend!!
I wish they would bring this back man I loved this
Which AEW or WWE star would work well in lucha underground
You and me both!
LU was amaaaaaaaaazing actually. Sad that it didnt get renewed. Legit it was awesome to watch.
I'm curious what everybody's favorite matches were.
Mine was Cage vs. Willie Mack (the one where Cage put Mack through a concrete brick).
the three stages of hell one with killshot and whoever the other was it got me and my dad hooked on LU
Puma vs Mil for the title 🔥
Killshot vs AR Fox... weapons of mass destruction match
@@vegasviking86 is that the one I am thinking? I know it ended when someone was put on an ambulance.
I don't remember what they called it but it was like the royal rumble
Pentagon is my favourite wrestling scents I first seen him in Lucia underground
He was one of my favourites too
I’ll never forget waiting in the rain for hours to see a tapping of LU.
How was it?
Actual footage from Lucha Underground: “My name is Prince Puma”
Every British wrestling geek: “Prince Pee-yuma has really made me…
Made you what? The suspense is killing me...
Fantastic video. I enjoyed LU so much and would love to see it return.
Thanks mate. Me too
Amazing show. Too bad it was short lived.
If you want something close to this, MLW has some of the same characters on their show, and is incorporating El Jefe in their storyline
Sad to say the wwe end of this didn't age well. 90% of the ones who made it to wwe have been released from their contracts
The wwe section of this video was out of date only weeks after being posted. Hopefully all involved land on their feet.
Here in 2024, would love to see an update to this, so many changes in the last 3 years
Video is in the works! A full ‘What Happened to Lucha Underground’
The only way I could see this amazing product coming back is under the wing of another promotion. If it’s a side product under something like aew the wrestlers can work more than the one hour tv show and actually earn a living. The other plus side to that is they can mix and match talent on the shows.
MLW are trying it as we speak
Well, you've done it again, sir. Top shelf 🤌
Glad you enjoyed it mate
I also want to mention that I've started a patreon and would appreciate any support you can send my way to help the channel grow!
Aight, bet, Matt Pod.
90% of the wrestlers that went to WWE have already been fired.
The last ten percent won't last
I wish they'd let Ricochet go, since they're obviously not using him. He's too good, even if his mic skills could be better.
This style of wrestling that’s supposed to be a drama instead of just a weekly event of matches is so much better
I agree! Wish L U was still around
Dario Cuervo is the most underrated wrestling personality of all time
Love him for sure!
Loved this show when it first started, such a fresh presentation
I agree
I loved the concept of Gift of the Gods. So much better than money in the bank.
Great video!! I needed this video. Appreciate you guys. 👍
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching
Never knew swerve was kill shot , and look at the former lucha underground wrestlers are now released from wwe
Marty the Moth is a badass. I know personally.. this video is a banger.
Thanks mate, what other topics would you like to see on the channel?
@@WrestlePod a deep dive like this.. oh wow. Hoodslam. For sure.
Great Video Man, well represented! Maybe I skipped it but, I think you forgot One Luchador.. Did you talked about El Dragon Azteca Jr.?
I hope they get their roster back if they re boot
The only guys I don’t see them getting back is Guevara and the Lucha bros
Love the video hope they come back soon watched it every week
Yeah I absolutely loved it
This was very enjoyable to watch. Thank you
Glad you liked it mate!
@@WrestlePod i truly did. I’ve been wondering for a while what exactly happened to it.
Lucha Underground was the first wrestling show I ever watched. I had no real interest in wrestling before, but I used to listen to a podcast where they'd occasionally talk about Lucha Underground, and they made it sound so gloriously absurd that I always assumed they were talking about a cartoon. Literally, as soon as I found out it was live action, I was like "This sounds like the best thing ever" 😆
So at the weird age of 26 or whatever it was, I was converted to a wrestling fan overnight by the sheer badassery and "weirdo charisma" of Drago, Sexy Star and Vampiro ✊
Honestly, I kinda wish I'd gotten into wrestling during the attitude era when all my mates were obsessed with the people's elbow and whatnot... There's a lot to catch up on 😦😆
