Checkers and Rally's - Why Two Different Names?

  • Ever since I released a video about why Carls Jr. and Hardee's go by two different names, I've been receiving an overwhelming number of people suggesting I make a similar video for Checkers and Rally's, so here it is. It's another set of restaurants that use the same branding and seem identical, and this video attempts to answer why.

    Checkers was actually my first job ever! I worked there when I was in high school in Miami, Fl. The drive troughs were called High Side(the drivers side window) and Low Side (the passenger side window). I started on the floors and burgers and quickly moved up to head cashier, often working both drive through windows at once. It was a great start and prepared me for what I didn't want to do in life; working BS jobs forever. It did however teach me the value of hard work and while I was there our store was the number #1 checkers in the country! They threw us a big party and it was amazing! Fast forward to today that very location (183 st and 27th ave in Miami) was just acquired by Rick Ross the rapper! I'm vegetarian now, but still love their fries!!!

      2. What a floor-safe was, and how it was used
      3. Having an excuse for your parents as to why you came home so late again
      4. Robbing from a cash resister
      5. Sex with the young Assistant Manager after hours

    Birmingham AL here. Rally's was me and my cousins favorite growing up. You cannot beat their fries, and a Big Buford makes a damned Big Mac look like play-Doh food. We had an odd occurrence in the early nineties. We had our local Rally's that we'd always gone to. Then, suddenly down the road, literally not even a mile, a Checkers opened. And this was 1992 or 93. We didn't know what the hell a checkers was, so we went through there. And we discovered it was the exact burgers, fries, and everything else. BEFORE you say they merged! We would get them confused they were so similar. Eventually the checkers closed, and where it used to be, theres a damn gas station. Years later, the Rally's we went to got shut down by the health department, apparently millions of roaches. It's a "Wing Stop" now. The only Rally's still around me are ones close to downtown birmingham, two in fact. I was shocked about a year ago, that the Walmart in Gardendale, AL had a checkers. Went inside and was amazed at the quality and service.

  • @amisner2k
    @amisner2k 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    Honestly, their logos are so similar that if they just swapped the actual name on the sign of all the Rally's buildings to Checkers overnight (or whenever the least-busiest hours were), I'd doubt anyone would even notice. You'd get a few people go, "Wait, didn't that use to say Rally's on it? Oh well.....and proceed to drive-thru". They've done such a good preliminary job of unifying the menu, branding colors and style up to this point that the final switch should be relatively painless. They can also run a simple "Rally's is Checkers" campaign to help ensure the least amount of brand-identity confusion.

    • @turtwig104
      @turtwig104 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That's what happened in my area. They remodeled the Rally's into a Checkers and no one noticed for a while because it had the same motif.

    At college in Louisiana in the around 1990, we had a Rally's right off campus, near a lot of bars. We had lots of late night burgers and fries! They changed to Checker's before I graduated. Their was also a local chain called Fast Trak, that had the same double drive thrus and seasoned fries. They lasted a few years but then shut down.

      True - you can actually find therm all in the same town. TJ Maxx and HomeGoods can be found in the same space - with a walkway between them. Because the Group purchases inventory from other retailers when they close locations - or even close altogether - you can score some steals that even Amazon doesn't have.

    We had one of each in my town for a while. Rally's was first, then Checkers came in about 3 miles away. I do remember the entire Checkers building coming pre-made on the back of a flat bed, then hoisted by a crane and put down on the foundation. Checkers didn't seem to last 10 years, and the location is now a Taco Bell. Rally's continues to this day.

      JDM A'F My ex works for Walmart, and on top of the decent pay, after 6 months of working there is the 10% store discount on non food items at any store in the USA, the option for medical benefits, and 401k retirement plans. The downsides are long hours, little time off(unless it's for medical reasons), and if you are on general stock duty, and/or lawn and garden/seasonal, then you better be in decent shape to walk across that store, and lift the items.
      Edit: to be known I spent 5 1/2 years at Dollar General, and with the shitty hours they gave us, the low pay(minimum wage) the fact we had to pay for our uniforms, very little time off of merit(meaning you might get a day off in the middle of the week, or go to work at 5am one day, and 4pm the next day), so if we wanted any of the crappy benefits we just about ended up owing the company money, so it was either take your shitty paycheck home, or have the 1/2 assed medical benefits( the base plan only covered $1,000 of medical cost a year), so yeah Walmart employees have it good compared to stores like Dollar General.

    Hearing this story reminds me of a Michigan franchise that rose in a similar way: “Hot-n-Now”. They were cheap, drive-through only burger joints that had 30 cent hamburgers in under a minute. Rose during the 90s, then got bought by PepsiCo and totally mismanaged into oblivion. I think there’s one Hot-n-Now left on the west coast of Michigan.

    I definitely remember a Rally's being in Danville Ky, me and mom would go and eat there every other day since it was so good and the shakes were amazing. But for some reason, like at least 12 years ago, it vanished. Turned out the place the building was at didn't do well for anything that was there and they left, that same building was a taco place and some other few things possibly including a Krystal at one point if im not mistaken. Danville has a large crossroads on the south end of town, going south you would end up in Liberty, east goes to Stanford, north brings you to the center of the city where all the business and homes are and eventually leads to Lexington, and west will go around and into the industrial side of the city potentially leading to Harrodsburg or Perryville. If you went west on the crossroad, Rallys was right by the road a few hundred meters from the crossroads, beside a bank and in front of some shopping centers with Kroger and more smaller shops just further down. My idea for why Rally's closed there may have been the fact that the south of the city was where all the other restaurants were and there is a LOT of them: McDonalds is on the hill, Dairyqueen and Subway beside it, then a very strangely placed Kfc in front of Lowe's and beside Lowe's is a Cracker Barrel on the hill in front of Rally's, going west from where Rally's was is Applebees and Zaxby's then BurgerKing used to be across the road from McDs in the big Manor lot, O'Charlie's beside it, Fazoli's next door to BurgerKing, a pizza place in the manor itself which used to be a Cici's in that spot too, Wendys and JimmyJohns just a little further north, next door to Wendy's is potentially my fav restaurant in the town a combination A&W/LongJohnSilvers, then near Wendy's is Little Caesars, beside Little C is TacoBell, across from them is Pizzahut, go further up the road you find a pizzeria franchise called Giovanni's and a chinese restaurant called Wok-N-Go, and further is Sonic near some of the residences, waaaaay further down entering the main part of the city is Domino's and Lee's, in the city itself is a bunch of places like Grace Cafe, Tut's, Bluebird, Wilcher's, Burke's Bakery, and many others, then you got like 3 to 4 Guadalajara restaurants in close proximity, going east from the crossroads is what used to be a Shonney's, then Cattleman's Roadhouse and a Buffalo Wings and Rings, also south of Danville leaving the town is a big place called Cheddar's and further south in a tiny town called Junction City less than 3 miles away is a Hardee's. Oh, also Chick-Fil-A now brings a little food truck to the lot where Rally's used to be now. Yeah, Danville is somewhat a popular town in the center of the state where a lot of good food is. Rally's probably couldn't handle the pressure.

    • @stanwbaker
      @stanwbaker 6 ปีที่แล้ว +53

      The 1994-99 period was when the menus and suppliers were standardized between the chains. Rally's had seasoned fries which were adopted by Checkers. Checkers didn't serve shakes. Checkers had two sizes of beef patties, for a regualr hamburger and their signature "Big Buford". All burgers now use the same 3.5 oz patties. Rally's offered a sloppy joe variant barbeque-flavored loose meat type sandwich called "Rally-Q" which has been eliminated. Some Checkers markets offered onion rings which have been discontinued.
      Checker's did advertise, but mostly in print and youth-focused radio. They adopted some reworks of Rally's spots after 1994. Rally's was always an inescapable advertising presence on television and radio in all the markets they served, including Los Angeles where they had only two stores.

    This reminded me of a Checkers in my area that closed. It spent years closed the empty husk of a building rotting on the corner of the intersection of two major roads. Finally after years of being closed it reopened to a lot of people cheering. But I had bitter memories of that place. When I was a teenager my parents would go out and bring me back something to eat. It was too late to bring me back Burger King which was what I loved at that time and the only place left open was Checkers. So they went there and ordered me a couple of cheeseburgers. I shrugged and gave it a try. It was awful. It was dosed in this spice that to this day have never experienced again. And the cheese was like it can straight out of the fridge and slapped on there which would have been ok except the burger was cold and pink inside like it too had just come out of the fridge. I swore them off for good and that was in 1999. I gave them a second chance long after the Checkers reopened and it was much better then, they figured out they needed to actually cook their food. I never learned why it was closed for so long.

    The situation involving the two supermarket chains branded as "Giant" (Giant-Landover and Giant-Carlisle) is worth covering.
    It's similar in some respects (formerly unconnected chains that now belong to the same parent company) and essentially the opposite in others (they've been kept separate and distinct, despite operating under the same name and bordering each other's geographic footprint -- purportedly because Giant-Landover is unionized and Giant-Carlisle is almost entirely non-unionized).
    Other interesting details include the relationship to Martin's (an alternative name for Giant-Carlisle, whose logo typeface it shares) and Stop & Shop (another sister chain, which shares Giant-Landover's logo typeface and an icon that also appears on store-brand products sold across all of these chains).

    I’m from north Florida and growing up it was always rally’s and didn’t become checkers until later. My brother’s first job was at a rally’s down the street from our house. Matter of fact the phrase “rally’s burger” … “I’m going to get a rally’s burger…” “I want a rally’s burger…” “you’re going to rally’s? Bring me back a rally’s burger…” was how we referred to the cheapest burger on the menu

    Rally's fries are the best, but the location nearest me is halfway across town, so I always forget it exists. I had also completely forgotten that old yellow Rally's logo until you showed it, which was cool to see.
    So the other one I'm curious about is White Castle and Krystal. The burgers seem very similar.

    • @johnbernstein7887

      They're the same company. The reason they use the name Edy's back east is so they're not confused with Breyers . Dreyer's Ice cream started in Oakland Ca in 1928 on Grand ave. Breyers started in Philadelphia in 1866. Dreyer's invented Rocky Road ice cream

    I was always fascinated at the west coast / east coast differences in gas station names, such as Chevron/Standard and Exxon/Esso.

    • @jb888888888
      @jb888888888 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They were both from Standard Oil; when SO got split up the various companies that were created each got to use the name "Standard Oil" in their region, such as Standard of Indiana or Standard of New Jersey, etc. As they all started to expand outside of their home areas they needed to have another name for places where another Standard already had rights to the Standard name, so they branded themselves as Chevron, Esso ("S-O") Amoco, etc. Eventually they all just dropped the Standard name and became their own brands. And then they started merging with each other again.

    When you're on the town just cruising around and you want to find something to eat, we've got a quarter pound burger for under a dollar. It's a price you just can't beat. Wheel into Rally's. You don't need a lotta dough. Wheel into Rally's. Rally's when you're on-the-go (beep beep)...Still remember the song 20+ years later. Here in Fl, Checkers started as Rallys and then shortly after the name changed.
    Checkers the dual drive thru that's never open
