Very nice! But Time Warner in San Antonio, charges the same rental price for the cable card as they do for the cable box. Cable companies literally rip people off every month.
Ninja 87 tell me about it...they suck. .a rep left cards in the floor running down my stairs my gm fractured her hip....no apology smh im in the lawyer phaze ass we speak..maybe ill own twc/spectrum....and ill gve all free cabel...lol....yea right im sure they'll work around this accident

Tommygunnz Frank yeah - it’s really amazing how cable companies and cable box makers made the tech so hard to use that they stopped putting it into TVs.
I had such a TV - an LG - and I did use the cable card. Of course the cable company tried to talk you into renting their higher priced box saying the card doesn't work well, etc.
We have digital cable in my area available without a cable box for regular channels along with analog and digital for 22 and below but you need some kind of box or cable card for premium channels.
I know what he meant dude, you're replacing the rented cable box for that one and just using the cable card, what I mean is you're still paying almost the same, it's just a couple dollars a month to rent the box.
thanks . wish we had that years ago when my mom bought a new tv after her old one died . the set said cable ready but comcast said no it was not. so we had to pay for 2 cable boxes . these were the old fashioned kind with the push buttons.
We cut the cable out and are saving 81 dollars a month using a TV Antenna and a ROKU however I wish we could get at least 4 channels we miss. They won't just sell us what we want.
I live in New York and we used to have the silver Bullet that u plugged into ur cable box,, but when the Cable Company finds out they Zap your TV and thats it, Busted and so is ur TV
Any inside or outside digital TV antenna will work to pick up free TV just like you did before you subscribed to cable, FIOS, or satellite. You can virtually use just about anything for an antenna, including an extension cord. You will not be able to pick up any cable channels, only free digital channels in your area. Cable cards aren't free either.
Correct. I go over that in this video. I also have a video for people who want DVR with an over-the-air signal that you're referring to. However, depending on location, signal strength and channel availability may vary and you might find that "virtually anything" won't cut it and you'll need an amplified antenna.
But you are still paying a monthly subscription from TWC for the Program package you choose...Basic, Premium etc. . Just not the box...so where is the advantage. The HD Box from them is $10 a month..... ????
A teeny bit confused... things seem to have advanced SO quickly (& here I... was the one people used to come to, to set up their smart-phones, cable, internet.. explain things. pssshhh. All this.... just finished watching something about KODI, builds. aahhh what the... ?! =p) SO you're running you cable now through your computer/home network ... via that box you purchased & a cable "card" (or so it seems??) How pricey were those up front? But.. you still pay for the monthly service right?? Think you had it bad, tho 2-3 yrs... I've had only ONE avail. provider where I live &, well... these days, unfortunately am home w/ back injury most of the time ...AND have a teenager too. So cable/internet are pretty much a "must have". At first, had some stupid "deal" for the first year. Ya know, yadda yadda b/s marketing, etc. After that year & EVERYTHING went right to full price.. dropped home phone I never used, not once (but HAD to have for, said "deal") dropped all the movie channels too, plus lowered my net speed from highest to whatever the medium/middle option was (never noticed any difference either) Also, when I first got it, pkg or not.. the cable box/DVR in one... & "gateway" ? from cable co.. were included.... & I had to get my own router. STILL have the same router, but shortly after that 1st yr pkg deal ended... they started charging everyone for dvr/box AND gateway (connection TO cable co?) My son's room was straight to TV until about a yr ago.. now requiring that little digital thing you have... All said, after that 1st yr & it all went to full price plus DVR + gateway +.... have called like 3x trying to get onto a new "deal". Last time, even told 'em I was gonna go elsewhere OR d/c & re-join to get it (since they keep sending ad's promo's in the mail anyway... to rub it in my face, why not!?) They told me if I did... I'd have to wait a YEAR to re-join & that they had no current promo's for estab. customers. UGH! Nice 'eh? Soooooo someone new, off the street can get "all in" for like $75-80/mo & well.. i cant even admit how much I have to pay... that I really... cant afford & would MUCH rather spend elsewhere! Let's just say it's MORE than double that... nearly... anyway! =/ Now.... recently, one of the 'dish' or ? I heard is 'in town', but... idk. Wish I could just get them to lower mine. I have basic family cable & med. internet, that's IT.. but don't know of another way. The DVR remote hasn't worked in, a looong time now & it just started acting up turning on/off randomly. AND....... the kicker... been w/ them for going on I think... SEVEN years now +, maybe even 8. ugh.. thinking of how much I've paid for that damn dvr sickens me... ALL of it does, to be honest...... Any suggestions? Best/easiest overall? (my apologies for the novel, btw) Thanks from Chicago.
Try just plugging in your TV to the wall. You may be pleasantly surprised. In my AO, analog is actually still on, (yes, I have TWC). Here in Pullman WA, analog and ClearQAM are alive and well.
@TechSpank, thanks for the info. Since this video is about 4 years old, I'd like to see what the most affordable option is now. I'm new to your channel, so if you have updated this, I'm sure I'll find out soon enough. :p
The landscape HAS changed a lot since I made this. With different TV services coming and going every few months, it's difficult to keep track. Even TH-camTV which is a pretty good service has changed it's price around 3 times in the last year... it's all very tricky.

I have Windows XP MCE (OEM) on an ancient PC without a video card and a Windows 7 Home Premium laptop, which has less features than the Premium versions.
Hmmmm not sure what you mean.... the Windows 7 laptop should have Windows Media Center, though... (they both may have it but I think 7 is better than XP)
It's to bad that windows 10 doesn't have windows media center. I use to use my HD HomeRun Prime with windows 7. But when I wound up with a windows 8.1 PC due to a warranty replacement for my PC, I had to pay to upgrade to windows 8.1 pro so I could additionally purchase & use windows media center. Unfortunately windows 10 doesn't have any option for windows media center. Part of the problem of upgrading to Windows 10. Microsoft customer service said that I would get another program to replace WMC since I purchased WMC for Windows 8.1 pro but that hasn't happened yet either because no actual program exists or Windows/Microsoft never bothered to give me the compatible replacement program. The Silicon Dust's HD HomeRun Prime works great, never had any issues with it, but unfortunately without windows media center on windows 10, I can no longer use the Silicon Dust's HD HomeRun Prime.
Don't you have to pay a monthly fee for the so-called "cable card" from TWC? Don't you have to pay for the same service that you currently have on your TWC cable top box? Anyhow thank you for this video.
***** Thank you. I live in Raleigh NC, and I wonder if TWC can offer the same service here with the TWC video card. I have two TVs at home, and not only I am paying for top box which is in the living room, but now I am paying about $6 for a digital tuner box in my bedroom. I will try to look into this at the TWC web site from Raleigh NC. Again thank you.
That "smart cam or smart card" goes INTO the Home Run instead of the tv (in the back of the tv), how many streams at ONCE it can support over AC wi-fi, and i hope u can watch your channels over the internet from the Home Run box, and finally, what maximum resolution supports locally and over the internet ??!??!??
According to the Comcast web site that I just checked: Will I be charged to use a CableCARD? The first CableCARD in a retail CableCARD device is free to Comcast customers. If a second CableCARD is needed for the same device (as is the case with certain older model TiVo devices), a charge will apply.
So you got rid of 1 cable box, then bought 2 pieces of equipment, and now rent a cable card instead of renting a cable box. That all seems legit. You need a girlfriend.
I was excited until it was mentioned I needed an ethernet cable. My modem is too far from the TV. Any suggestion on a device that can connect without ethernet cable
i didn't realise cable boxes were still being used. when digital t.v.'s came out all you had to do was plug in your cable to the t.v. no box needed. maybe it's just my cable co.
DroneXFun not anymore. you need a box now no matter what because the cable company are going 100% digital. even if you have the most expensive digital tv it will not work anymore. everywhere in the country will be that way. I use to be able to get 70 plus channels with the cable right to the tv but now even if you want just basic cable with no box you have to go down and get a small little converter box to be able to get that signal. may be they haven't done it where you are yet but it will happen. it's some fcc regulation that all have to comply by a certain date. kinda sucks but it is what it is.
I will visit the HD Silicon Dust website, but in my region Cox Communications has a monopoly: I also suspect that many companies have monopolies in other regions of states in the USA. I have not yet found any LEGAL alternative to getting around renting a crappy POS equipment. When the United Socialist of America - oops I mean the United States Federal Government passed the FCC Bill of 2015, that passage impacted many bands of the frequency spectrum; therefore nearly all forms of telecommunication is changing, some good changes and some bad changes, so I will need to go read the FCC Bill over again to find any good decisions in favor of the consumer.
The cable modem that you purchased, is it a one time purchase fee? or is there a monthly fee? can you explain how does ( the modem work) it works? do I still need to subscribe to a cable company? do I need to have internet connection in order for this to work? Thanks in advance.
I bought my own modem and it works just fine. Only have to pay for the service. As for the internet connection, if you want to get guide data and set things up properly, yes, you'll need an internet connection.
Let's start a partition. No cable no bill. They are a rip off. I was with the cable company for 7 months and I had to realize in 7 months, I had paid them 1500 dollars over 7 billing periods. That's alot to watch T.V. Now I've saved 1500 in another 7 months and used it to spruce up my home.
nice video I am interest buying this box but since your video was posted in 2016 now we are in year of 2020 does this box exist and if it does how channels comes with and is there monlthy fee or any kind of subscription.
I already did this 3 yrs before. All u do is use the xfinity app.no cable boxes needed. The tricky part is unlocking it. There is a way but im not telling you. You use the xfinity stream app. No cable boxes no wires needed. Just chromecast..you need cable to do it but you dont need any cable boxes. And you can stream up to 4k. Xfinity boxes are only hd. So when u have a 4k tv you arent getting 4k maybe 1980 pixels. The cool thing is u can stream to multiple tvs. And if you go to a hotel u can stream it there. But the key is unlocking it.
I'm not paying Comcast, Verizon or any other bullshit TV source a penny. I've spent enough money up to this point of my life and I'm done. They can take their TV program access and shove it where the sun ........ Anyhow , I will just watch my local channels for free with a cheap antenna. I don't even pay for Internet anymore , why would anyone , when you can get it for FREE.
The company in the USA who offered every channel streamed through the internet was shut down by the govt. Now I see things like KODI etc, where people are getting ANY channel free online, however in most countries that would be illegal.
BUT they tell you "A cable card won't let you watch scrambled channels like HBO, etc". And they used to argue they didn't have a Cable Card or have to give you one, but on the TV's sold in 2005 that had Cable Card slots in the back of the unit had a sticker telling you that was bs. However now days most TV's sold don't even have a Cable Slot anymore, probably because the big cable companies are paying MFG's to NOT offer tv's with Cable Card slots anymore. My LG 32" has one but I've never used it.
I qualify4 Xfinity essentials can I use this with the internet only modem.I just can't afford att/DTV any longer. I can't even afford basics anymore.I need to send it back before June not paying 55.00 more so you still have time Warner? I n otherwords you still have a pkg
Confused...you're still paying the monthly fee to the cable company (mine is Cox), right? Is this just about getting a box that is more advanced than the cable box rented to you thru your cable company or getting free cable? Also, I don't see answers to the many questions I also have listed below.
TechSpank well then its not very well, like you said.. without a box then is it. Thought maybe cause it was a smart tv were might skip the box. One. Can hope you know. Lol
If you don't want to have a DVR and don't mind giving up a little control, you could get by with a Smart TV and Apps for the channels you want to watch or the app from your cable service, if they offer one. Time Warner/ Spectrum, for instance, have an app where you can watch live TV and certain OnDemand offerings. It's like watching TV over the internet, though, and comes with all those headaches and buffering crap, which is why I don't like it.
I wish the same could be done with satellite. Alternatively, I would eventually like to get a good rooftop antenna set up and not pay for cable. Then, mabye save money for vinyl records and books.
No Kodi for me since they don't have the ability to decrypt the DRM channels... however as long as you get a copy of Win7 you get WMC... I think it's really worth it after using it for almost a year.
Hmmm not really an interface... the HDHomeRun just kinda pumps the TV onto your home network. Then your computer goes on the network and pulls up the signal to show it to you.
MSNBC can be had on Apple TV, TH-cam tv, try getting local sports channels. The Chicago Cubs have every angle blacked out. You can get everything HD Homerun Prime offers on TH-cam tv! FORGET ABOUT IT!
I think I mentioned that it was around $2.50 a month. You can't BUY them you can only rent them from your cable company. They price for cards is different for each provider. From free to around $5 a month, but ALWAYS seems to be much less than a cable box and DVR monthly rental. Good luck!
Comcast told us that Cable Cards do not get ON DEMAND or premium stations like HBO, Showtime, etc, that's what their "box" is for. Hence how they get you suckered in. Now days most tv's do not even have a Cable Card slot, they did in the mid 2000s, my LG had one I never used. They would also lie to customers and say "we don't have Cable cards" or tell you "we don't have to give you one". My LG had a sticker on it that said cable companies have to provide cable cards but then they can still charge you a rental fee for the cable card. It should be a law where you can buy a Cable Card outright and not have to pay rent for anything. They get enough money with commercials, now days a TV show is only 20 minutes long and the rest is damn commercials.
renae gray it’ll give you whatever you subscribe to with your cake package. You just won’t be using their equipment. This video is rather outdated though since most cable companies have apps now.
I'm in Canada and have no idea what a cable card is. As for no box, well that's not entirely true. You are using a computer with Windows Media Center installed. In a sense that's your box. I have that too. You are still paying for cable so all you're saving is the box rental. When you want to watch TV, you have to have your computer running. If someone doesn't have Windows Media Center on their computer then do they still need a box? What does the card do? Does it allow you to get more channels? If you are using Windows Media Center for your TV then what is the HomeRun Prime box really do? I'm a little confused what the box you're using really does.
Do you have to plug in your PC to get the HD Homerun to work? Does your PC have to be on all the time? I think that you skipped some steps before plugging into the HD Homerun?
If I switch the mini box with hd home run won't they still charge the surcharges? Cox says they charge me $3 for the mini box and $22 in surcharges. For $3 a month I am wondering if this is worth it if they just hide behind the charges.
@@SmartWentCrazy , I also have Cox Cable and a mini box. I just noticed how few actual channels we as consumers actually get if we get essential TV from them. My parents have an antenna and get more channels. Cox Cable has an option to rent the Cablecard for $2.99/mth (a dollar less a month than the mini box). Depending on your area, it may be worth looking into this option

All cable company's are a bunch of rip offs.

This is absolutely hilarious. They used to manufacture tvs with a slot for cable cards but no one ever used it.

Comcast now adds a $10 per month "additional outlet" fee to rent a cbl card, on top of the 2 or 3 bux for the card itself.

I would love to get this but the cable company I have where I live doesn't have a lot of channels.
To get the box do I still need a cable subscription?
My brother has a tv with no antenna coax port on it how does he get over the air tv stations
To be clear , u have to have cable coming in ur house in order to do this, correct??
i didn't realise cable boxes were still being used. when digital t.v.'s came out all you had to do was plug in your cable to the t.v. no box needed. maybe it's just my cable co.
DroneXFun it's pretty funny but some cable companies were giving out those free digital boxes
As for the internet connection, if you want to get guide data and set things up properly, yes, you'll need an internet connection.
dude you're adorable you crack me up you're entertaining and educational kudos
I'm blushing over here...
Let's start a partition. No cable no bill. They are a rip off. I was with the cable company for 7 months and I had to realize in 7 months, I had paid them 1500 dollars over 7 billing periods. That's alot to watch T.V. Now I've saved 1500 in another 7 months and used it to spruce up my home.
nice video I am interest buying this box but since your video was posted in 2016 now we are in year of 2020 does this box exist and if it does how channels comes with and is there monlthy fee or any kind of subscription.
just me or the amazon page he shows is a internet modem not a cable receiver??? just checking :P
Now I see things like KODI etc, where people are getting ANY channel free online, however in most countries that would be illegal.
how do you get internet. free?
Watch the there video I did about an over the air version of this same thing :) CUT THE CORD BABY! CUT IT!
TechSpank I watched most of your videos, so you are still alive? Haven't seen you making anything new.
sub to me and I will 100% no joke, sub back 100000000000000 times, THIS IS NOT A SCAM!
I take it that this may not work with the old school CRTs?? Do you have to have LED or LCD screens?
If you can plug a computer into the CRT, it'll work.
So with a cable card and HD home run then you are required to still purchase internet? What is your link for building your own dvr?
The link is in my head :) Windows Media Center (in windows 7) is free and included.
Does this work on a Satellite box the web site don't say crap.???
Do you still have to pay for DVR service even you technically don't have their box?
Watch TV Without the Cable Box
I qualify4 Xfinity essentials can I use this with the internet only modem.I just can't afford att/DTV any longer. I can't even afford basics anymore.I need to send it back before June not paying 55.00 more so you still have time Warner? I n otherwords you still have a pkg
Will it work in India? The cable cards here are thin like ATM cards.
Those are smart cards I think... not too sure but you'll have to check with your local provider to see what system they use. Good luck!
Confused...you're still paying the monthly fee to the cable company (mine is Cox), right? Is this just about getting a box that is more advanced than the cable box rented to you thru your cable company or getting free cable? Also, I don't see answers to the many questions I also have listed below.
Sure hope it works with spectrum
Were you having that gin & tonic at 9am like me?
No not dark at all, you look good!
Sooo let me get this straight.... Ummmm you still need a box.
Robyn Banks yup. The signals don’t magically decrypt themselves...
Won't work anywhere in Canada ....with all et work providers
I wish the same could be done with satellite. Alternatively, I would eventually like to get a good rooftop antenna set up and not pay for cable. Then, mabye save money for vinyl records and books.
Who would down vote this smh. This is awesome
I have optimum ,will it work? And will they let me return my box and keep the card?
Windows Media Center isn't anymore, Kodi seems to be the way to go. Any videos on Kodi?
No Kodi for me since they don't have the ability to decrypt the DRM channels... however as long as you get a copy of Win7 you get WMC... I think it's really worth it after using it for almost a year.
You mean your home run box creates an interface between tv and the media center windows 7 premium OS.....nice i like it.....
FORGET ABOUT IT!
please explain how to setup windows media centre and how to save videos
how much is the card that you got from Time Warner? Or did I mis that part
I think I mentioned that it was around $2.50 a month. You can't BUY them you can only rent them from your cable company. They price for cards is different for each provider. From free to around $5 a month, but ALWAYS seems to be much less than a cable box and DVR monthly rental. Good luck!
It seems the point was not to pay a monthly fee for the cable box ;yet you're going to rent a cable card ?
what about things like on demand, pay per view & premium channels
No, no, and yes.
To the
If you are trying to get rid of the cable then how do you get a cable card to use for the hd home run box
What was that pc box you were running windows 7 on called?
It's an Lenovo nettop - around 6 years old.
+TechSpank Oh alright thanks man. Im looking for a box that'll work with DRM channels. Have you tried any other devices besides that or the PS3?
+Nicholas Cheney it's really up to the cable company and how they set the DRM - that's why windows media center is the best bet...
+TechSpank Well they certainly dont make it easy, do they? hahaha
Thanks for the reply man. Enjoy your night!
Nicholas Cheney
how many channels did it discover?
I have time Warner Cable as well did you receive digital box yellow light stop blinking.
Cable appears on the simpsons episode Homer vs Lisa and the 8th commandment
Comcast will get you an HDDCT (main non-dvr box) for free)
Had xfinity Comcast and got 5 channels 2 ads 2 checking updates 2 blanked
What channels and shows does it give you? i like to watch tlc, mtv, bravo etc
renae gray it’ll give you whatever you subscribe to with your cake package. You just won’t be using their equipment. This video is rather outdated though since most cable companies have apps now.
So did u buy the card and are they charging u?
I rented the card from TWC - around $3 a month. The DVR and service from them cost around $20 I think... so I saved a LOT of money.
Thx for your public service. I subscribed. And you’re easy on the eyes. Ooofff, did I just say that?!
Do you have to plug in your PC to get the HD Homerun to work? Does your PC have to be on all the time? I think that you skipped some steps before plugging into the HD Homerun?
so do you not pay a bill for cable like free tv
If I switch the mini box with hd home run won't they still charge the surcharges? Cox says they charge me $3 for the mini box and $22 in surcharges. For $3 a month I am wondering if this is worth it if they just hide behind the charges.
I'm not sure what you mean by "mini box" - can you tell me which part of my video you see mini box?
@@TechSpank basically it's the cable box Cox makes you rent.
