That effect is a single Mandala digital drum pad with three sonic zones that he's beating in descending repetition

I'm loving the more frequent upload schedule. I don't understand how this channel doesn't have more subs. Your reactions and analysis are so thoughtful.

      Wow tysm, you're kind!
I think my commentary style isn't for everybody, but that's okay! Glad you enjoy my uploads :)

2:49 it's actually alternating measures of 5/8 and 6/8, repeated in cycles 3 times, which in total makes a 33/8 time signature in verses. That's the easiest way to count, for me at least.
The instrumental chorus and mid-song break is based on 4/4, with some crazy Double-stroke polyrhythms from Danny Carey

I think the instrument at the beginning is a kalimba or something made to sound like a kalimba. There are like 14 instruments similar to xylophone and it's one of them.

Absolutely one of Tool's greatest tracks. Just sonic perfection!

Yeah, watch the drum cam, it’s amazing. Also, I feel this song is an example of the universe shining through us (Tool) in a really pure form, like they were just radiating it. So beautiful and powerful.

First of all: Dude! Were your parents Tool fans? Your name was meant for you to listen to Tool.
Second: Everyone here is going to say it but react to the Vic Firth drum cam version and you'll shit your pants.
Third: I believe the time signature is 33/8 because the one phrase starts from 2:15 and goes to 3:11 in your time stamps and then repeats. Now there are like 10 different ways you can break that down but I believe that's the gist of it (Music majors correct me if I'm wrong and on my terms.)
    Love your reactions.

The whole “Fear Inoculum” album has a similar journey feel to this song. Long, hypnotic, TONES upon TONES. It’s fucking wonderful 🤘🏻

Your take on the lyrics is pretty spot on-as much as you can be with Tool anyway (; Or maybe you & Maynard are on the same track.
You would probably enjoy Third Eye, message wise. Or Jimmy because it’s so plaintive and beautiful (be sure to play it immediately following Intermission tho). Or Jambi or The Grudge if you want to rock out.
Nobody else is like Tool, but maybe you’d like one of Maynards’s other bands, a perfect circle. They are completely different. The songs are their songs are completely different than tools, although Maynard writes those lyrics to. But the sound is nothing the same, and if you want to hear Maynards‘s vocals in higher relief, this is your band to listen to next. Try Three Libras first 🤘

That's not a door stop or an effect (though it is an electronic pad): that's years and years of practicing drums.
As someone else said, you should really check out the drum cam to see him play it.

Welcome to my favorite Tool song! If you like this song, the entire Fear Inoculum album is for you - Descending and 7Empest are my other favorites off that album. There is a drum cam of Pneuma being performed live. It will give you a next level appreciation for the drumming on this track.
A few big songs from other albums that are must listens are Lateralus and Right In Two. I have a feeling you will be into the lyrics of those songs.

Hi. You can actually watch the rig rundown. Danny uses something called mandala pads, that can be customized to have that "tabla" sound (I saw somewhere that he learned tabla and that's one of the main reasons why he plays the toms and the whole pieces like he is "singing" Konnakol. It's a weird time signature. You should watch the drumeo video of Mike Portnoy trying to grasp this. It's awesome). Pneuma stands for "Spirit". So, we are bound to this flesh, according to the reencarnation theological concept in hinduism (and also if you read Allan Kardec books on the multiplicity of existences), we keep coming to this Earth always trying to get better. But we forget all about the past. That's why theres the "wake up, remember". If you imagine that ones spirit incarnates in each life we have the light inside bound to a carbon based lifeform that always tries do become... Pneuma. This is a meditation piece. I have done that with this song a lot of times, just feeling the breath. These guys are completely out of this world. That being said, I have been reading the "Autobiography of a Yogui" of Yogananda, and have been hearing this track over and over and over, so both things intertwine. Danny Carey plays without a click and most of this comes straight out of their intuition in the form of a multi-layered musical universe. I just imagine how the universe creates and colapses in the several eras of hindu cosmology and how many times we have tried to reach out to be One. This song is a masterpiece.

Something that's likely to enhance your experience with Tool's music is to completely let go of the want/need to interpret it. Simply listen and absorb it, you'll get what you need from it then. Root yourself in the bass and drums and just let the guitars and vocal flow around and through you. Think of it this way, the bass and drums are the mountains, and the guitar and vocals are the clouds and wind that drift by and around you.
