Warren, you have been so generous with your time, and your content is mind-blowing. You have taken the time to answer some really important questions for me (and many others!) and all I want to do is say thank you. This channel has been SO inspiring. Long may it continue!!
Produce Like A Pro: Hi, and thanks for letting us suggest. Please, “Just Like Starting Over”. I was only 4 when I heard it for the first time and for some reason, it always reminded me of “The Empire Strikes Back”. I guess it must have something to do with my age and what whas going on at the time, but there was something about the voices at the end of the song, that made me think of Darth Vader 😅.
I could listen to Jack talk about John Lennon for a gazillion hours! I'm glad John Lennon got to make this album. My favorite of his solo albums. Thanks Warren!
To this day, when I listen to this album, Istill have to stop and take a break after hearing BEAUTIFUL BOY. It takes me a moment before I can carry on. Great interview and insight from Jack. Thank you.
@reddoor6114 I get that just from looking at the album cover. Great album, though. I also dig the sparse black and white photography. But it still hurts.
Jack’s recollections make John come across as human, full of insecurities just like the rest of us. It must have been hard for John to live up to his reputation. I would like to hear more on the recording of Happy Christmas. It’s a unique production. As ever thanks Warren and Jack.
After 40 years, I finally get Yoko’s songs. It’s really brilliant. Obviously John’s stuff is as great as you would expect but Yoko’s songs are really interesting and it really is a brilliant snapshot of their relationship.
I wish we can see a full documentary of Mr. Douglas career one day. Just him talking, no fancy editing, similar at what you did here, Warren. What an amazing professional and storyteller he is. Thanks for sharing!
Amazing, just give us more of Jack please Warren. You could easily do a full length film for Netflix or someone on just his memories of working with John. How great would it be to hear John's demo tape
These conversations with Jack are just gold. Just wish they were longer. I love that we see you looking just as mesmerised at these stories as the rest of us, wherever we may be watching from.
I have a hard time listening to this album and Milk and Honey. When I first heard 'Grow Old With Me,' I broke down and cried like a baby. I still miss John. The world could use Dr. Winston O'Boogie right now.
I first bought the lp, six hours before he was stolen from us. I heard it a couple of times prior. Not thinking, I displayed it under my lamp. It warped. Have replaced it three times since. 12/8/80, one of my Top Ten Life Changing Events. Will never forget!
It was ok but I wouldn’t say anything better than Paul had done or George but there were some good songs on johns album I just wish he would have done it without her
I bought double fantasy last year, 2020, the 40th anniversary of John’s passing. I really love John’s songs on it, a real return to form. Much better for me than Mind Games.
Thank you both for another beautiful interview, and for sharing your personal and professional stories which bring so much to enrich us. As a teenager in the late 90s I would travel across the pond to NYC to celebrate John's birthday with lots of other fans, singing songs into the night. Now I'm a dad of an 11-year-old and my son has his records too. I can't wait to take him over one day. Best wishes to Jack and to you, Warren!
I had Double Fantasy when it was first released, just as I had all the other Lennon solo albums, but I couldn't listen to any of them until the late '90s, because his death hurt too much. When I returned to them, it was like meeting up with an old friend after years apart. Thank you, and thanks to Mr. Douglas for all of the good work he has done bringing these records into the world.
After working in Pro Tools for over 20 years and then hearing the songs in iTunes sonically destroyed, I found out about Hi-Res streaming and went with Qobuz and straight to John Lennon. On "Starting Over" I now for the 1st time heard the bass lines I have never heard. All the solo album work is better than ever. I keep going back to John. Peace and Maximum Respect
These videos with Jack are pure gold! A total privilege to hear all the stories and details of records that have shaped the world we live in. Fantastic stuff Warren !
One of my all-time fav records. I was one of the first to purchase it when it hit the stores. After the news that John had been shot, I made a cassette of Starting Over back to back on both sides. That was all I listened to for weeks.
Wow, wow, wow. I'm speechless. I hope it does not go unnoticed how important these behind the scenes videos are. They are a historic archive and treasure. Thank you, Jack and Warren! - chazroot
Thank's! My biggest influence is Beatles. And that record as all the others is each and everyone still what musically means most to me. As a kid, I saw Beatles live 63 and that was completely mindblowing! John, Paul, Ringo and George are still giving my life a thrill. They're just never boring to go back and listen to. Great to hear this talk with a producer that actually worked so close with John. Thank's again!
Since Jack knew John so well, I'm guessing he also knew some of the guys in John's band. Maybe Jack can settle something I've wondered about for the last 39 years. Back in the summer of 1980, months before "Double Fantasy" was released, I was going to a day camp in the Bronx. One of the bus drivers who worked for the camp was this long-haired hippy who, if I remember right, was named Billy, and who us kids thought was really cool. During an overnight camping trip the camp held, Billy came along and brought an acoustic guitar with him. (I remember him singing and playing "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" and "Sympathy for the Devil" for us.) At one point during that trip, he told a bunch of us kids that he knew John and Yoko, and had played in John's band. Being dopey 10 and 11-year-olds, we were eager to believe him. All these years later, I still wonder if Billy was telling us the truth, or if he was just making up stories to impress a bunch of gullible pre-teens. I didn't buy "Double Fantasy" when it came out, but I did buy the 45 of "Starting Over" the week that was released. (For some reason, I was really into buying 45s at that age.) I was 11 years old at the time, so you can do the math on that. 😉
Why I get emotional about Lennon is strange to me. I was a toddler when he died, yet him & the boys are the reason I picked up the guitar. I guess that's the power of music. Thanks for such a great episode, Warren.
Its not strange Toni! He was so honest, he bared his soul to us and sometimes it was beautiful and other times it wasn't! Artist like him let us know, remind us, that we are human!
Amazing sounding album. One of the best lead vocal sounds ever (John's lead vocals on the entire album) which I *believe* is a Neumann U67, but I could be wrong. The 'stripped' version shows how fantastic the raw vocal sound is, as well as the overall mic'ing of the instruments.
My fondest memory of John Lennon was when he would stop by the radio station (WNEW) New York City, to spin records. He'd come in un-announced and stay for three hours. I was 20. Scott Muni and Dennis Elsis were the DJs .
I love these fly on the wall interviews Warren. They add a human element. We often forget that our idols are people just like you and me with the same insecurities. Hearing Jack talk about John behind the scenes gives us a glimpse of reality and let's us into his world. Keep up the good work!
I had gotten the record late in the evening of the 7th, for my birthday the following day. It seems like it had just, been released. I think the store had just stocked it. I listened to it as soon as I got up on my birthday getting ready for school. Loved it❣️ Later that evening we were all in the car and hearing it being played on the radio, and it was announced he'd just been killed. 💔💙It was my 17th birthday, and senior year high-school. Thank you Jack❣️
That was a ,spectacular interview, It took me there. I can totally relate, Love doing the vocal live + that flat D string is a very interesting story.. Double Fantasy is a Masterpiece! Choosing Jack to produce the record was terrific justjudgment on John's part ... ty Rocklove ArtyThan ☆♡☆
Again, absolutely loved this. I remember exactly where I was when I heard, for the first time, "Starting Over" from that album. Moments of Nostalgia for me. Thankfully with playlists, I can skip the Yoko songs. :) Sorry, not sorry! ;)
I remember too....I was a sunny day. I was 15 years old and I was listening to the radio while I was painting the trim in our bathroom. Deep in the heart of my Beatles obsession.....
i think the yoko songs are precisely what they wanted to put out as her half of the record. i enjoyed them then and do now. they don't and couldn't stack up to the final recordings of the most beloved singer of my lifetime. the people slagging the man's music and wife aren't too far removed from the 💩who took his life!@@Producelikeapro 💩
This video changed my life a little bit...I never heard this album before, after watching the episode I put it on my iTunes on my way to work and it put a BIG smile on my face! Thank you!!!!
As I type this, I'm listening to Watching the Wheels. These interviews with Jack end much too soon! Warren, you and I are of the same age. So perhaps its just silly nostalgia. But, this music taught us so much! And to have Jack share his experiences with us, is such a treat. Thank's Warren! Cheers!
Wow! man, I'm going to be thinking about those cassettes forever now that I know they exist! Thanks for sharing Jack with us Warren. I would love to hear about every track!
I bought it on release-date. I was so into-Lennon. I had found The Woman who actually found me. We married after one week. She had a lot of Lennon records. I had one. Mind Games, which I still consider is the best he ever did. I quit the band used first two recorders and started recording between them. Didn’t like it. Bought the newly developed TEAK 4-channel cassette recorder. Anyway. Loved Lennon’s way of making music. Listen to double fantasy. Didn’t thought Yoko was really my cup of tea the so, my wife had bought McCartney II. So I copied John & Paul’s to an own record as if they still worked together. I turned 26, oct 18 around that period. The album was great. Everything was as it should be. Then he got shot. My father called in the morning. Woke me up and said that John Lennon had been shot. I could not believe it. Turned on radio. It was still dark out. We were devastated, me and my wife. We also thought about Yoko and the whole world that now just fell apart. So I wrote a song. Which I to this day have been recorded about 5 times. For myself. I just played it when this episode was one youtube. Strange. The name of the song turned out to be, Curtain Call. It’s not before long time after that I got aware of its chord structure as if it’s Lennon himself wrote it. Lots of + & add chords. At the time I did know nothing about harmonies. I just make songs for my own delight. That morning change my life to the core. Now I’m 69 and can reminisce that morning like it was yesterday. What a wasted, horrific deed that became the life to so many. If Lennon should return to this day, he probably would had lost his mind. Anyway. Thank You 🙏 ☮️❤️🗽

Very interesting to hear, Jack seems a really nice guy. You can tell he was close to John, ive seen that interview he did the day after the shooting and he was so shaken. “Woman” has long been a favourite of mine.
Although I am a fan of the Beatles and John Lennon I would like to hear stories and studio recordings of Them or at least Van Morrison as the third album iI bought was Them second L.P. was The Pretty Things and my first L.P. was The Kinks,so can you oblige me Warren. My favourite track is it's all over now baby blue sung by Van on the Them Again album1965\66.,the Bob Dylan Classic......best cover version to my mind!.....I love listening to your interviews with Jack Douglas
What an amazing and wonderful interview! I sooooo appreciate Jack's insights into John's final sessions for this iconic album....insecurities and all. Thank you so much Jack, and thank you as always Warren!
Jack is such a great interview as you are a great interviewer - love the flow. This is such an important record, it’s so nice to hear the background on it . Thanks again Warren !! Cheers!!
I was about 7 so no real idea of what was happing, but it was about now when I first starting listening to music. We had just moved house and were enrolled at the local library which had an audio section so albums were worn out before we had to return them. So it goes without saying the music of Lennon was eventually found some years later first Paul's solo albums (from the library) then the Beatles and onto Lennon.
Wow!! That was just amazing!! Thank you Warren for that! Actually made me cry! Being a huge Beatles and Lennon fan that was just out of this world! I wanna save this video to keep forever!
brother you have no idea how much I am excited about watching this. I havent put it on yet but I just felt a need tot hank you... i'm a young (ish) musician but Lennon is stil my all time favorite and this album is amazing ESPECIALLY mind games :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

You're very kind my friend!!
One of the greatest videos I have ever seen. Thank you Warren and Jack for this.
What a wonderful guy Jack is. Thank you so much for sharing his incredible knowledge and experience!
