In my opinion, this movie is a masterpiece. The music, the aesthetics, the characters, all of it. Everything blends together in a way that is truly magic, and to say that this movie left an impact on me as a young kid would be an understatement. I was OBSESSED with this movie when I was younger. I even had my parents by me a a suit similar to Boy's and I would act out the scene when he explodes from the lights and his clothes fold up nice and neat along with his shoes. Maybe its the nostalgia but they really don't make them like this anymore.

As a child this movie and Labryinth were among my favorites. I was obsessed with them. They were so unique and magical. This movie really left an impact on me too. They really don't make movies like they use too. The magic of having a set and makeup is fading away to computers. Doesn't feel as real and fantastical.
i first watched this movie yesterday and i'm 22. i honestly think is THE gateway horror movie. it has it all and the atmosphere is perfect. so i don't think it'all nostalgia. also i agree with the comment below, labyrinth is another movie with this fever dream atmosphere that i love so much.
I started both this, and Silence of the Lambs in 1991 with my parents. I made it through Silence of the Lambs. Still have no clue how this one ends. So damn creepy.
Frank Whaley deserves a hell of a lot more praise for his performance. He had so little screen time, but he gave it everything he had. Frank was kind enough to answer a few questions about Boy I asked a while back, and he said Boy was one of his favourite roles, just so you know :) It's a shame Little Monsters is so niche here in the UK. It's my all-time favourite film. I've been lucky enough to speak to people who have worked on it, and it makes me sad that not many people here know it exists.
The question on all our minds: Who was Boy? We all have our theories, so here is mine. Essentially, he represents Peter Pan Syndrome: a person who wants to escape the responsibilities of adulthood and remain a kid forever. Some fans believe this desire created the Underworld while others believe he simply discovered it and never looked back. Regardless of how the Underworld came to be, it was there he found what he always wanted: escape from the world above and complete freedom. Over time, he appointed himself leader among the little monsters. His authority is represented by the forbidden Master Staircase that leads to his room and the monsters, specifically Snik, who serve him. But all this came with a price: his humanity. Anyone who spends 24 hours in the Monster World becomes one, but while most transformed into mostly harmless, anthropomorphic-types, Boy became a hideous, nightmarish creature. But who was he? His prep school uniform and personality suggest he was an intitled preteen with a big ego. Snik's insistence that "Boy always gets what he wants" reflects this. So, what's wrong with this picture? At first glance, Boy is unassuming and charming, but he is literally hiding something rotten beneath the facade. His skin is ripped and stretching at the seams, his hair is a wig, and the back of his head is raw and mishappen. Maurice said he's "eleven years old" and that he's been a monster for "two-hundred years." If this is true, that means Boy has been hiding his transformation for years because he was repulsed by it. Some believe he may have taken skin and hair from others to prolong the ruse. When Brian and the gang blast him with light, he painfully tears the skin from his face revealing nothing short of a demon. But why? I believe his long disconnection from humanity and lack of morality transmogrified into a being of outright evil rather than one of whimsical imagination. When he was hit with more light a second time, he turned into clothes, but Snik's explosive (premature) death splashed fire all over them and burned him to death. Why he stood there and allowed himself to be defeated is anyone's guess. Now there's the matter of Boy and his "favors." Many believe Arnold was asked to perform a sexual act for him, perhaps fellatio given the not-so-ambiguous dialogue. I'm not one to indulge the "everything has to be perverted" angle and I have heard a theory that Arnold's knees hurt because the favor asked of him required having to climb numerous staircases, possibly to retrieve something from the world above for him. I'm certain many will stick with the blowjob idea, so viewer's choice on that one!

After watching it, I thought he was “boy” because he was an older guy wanted to be young, look young and stay young forever. Hence why he had his skin pulled back across his face and stapled behind his head. He wanted to be perceived as young, like a boy, but now reading that theory that he stole the skin 😬 kind of makes sense. Very cool theory. Must watch again

Easily one of the creepiest characters in a kids movie and a very underrated performance, love the tone and the magical late 80s campy vibes, this movie is actually pretty good and holds up well some 30 years later
This movie brings me straight back to being a kid, wishing I could go down there and live in Monster Neverland. I was 5 or 6 when I watched this, and it made me find my way to tales from the dark side, tales from the crypt, and all manner of horror. I thought boy was extremely creepy, and I couldn't wait to get scared and excited again. Magical times.

I am surprised that they had never did a anniversary edition for this little monsters movie here, this was like totally epic and the coolest back then and it still is.
Oh, This was my favorite part of the whole movie! I wasn't even alive when this movie came out but I remember my mom always putting it in the DVD player for me to watch as a child. It's one of my top favorite movies. My mom actually had this movie signed by Howie when he came here to our Casino. She has it in a show case now.

This kid messed. Me. UP. 😅 there were a few parts that made me wildly uncomfortable…the reveal of the back of his head ☠️ I still loved it though, and it introduced me to one of my favorite songs at the end. I feel like I need to rewatch it again at 43.
@Janell Olney Maybe the reason was because Boy was trying to get that teddy bear to drill and screw Brian's shoe to the floor and stay where he was because Boy was the one who wanted Brian to agree to stay in the monster world and agree to convert himself into a monster and be his pal while allowing Kirsten, Todd, and Eric to escape as Boy said from 3:12-3:23. Lucky for Brian, he probably kicked the teddy bear away just in time.
@@hector-sauvage Probably not because everything around that staircase is considered bad which is why all the other monsters are not going towards that staircase especially earlier in the movie Maurice told Brian to stay away from Snik and the staircase that belongs to Boy. The teddy bear was probably just trying to screw Brian's shoe to the floor to get him to stay where he was so Brian will agree to convert into a monster and be Boy's pal while letting the others escape as Boy said from 3:12-3:23. Luckily Brain kicked the teddy bear away just in time.
