I just saw a follow up to this story. A wonderful man and wife, who own Discount Fence (I'm assuming in the same area in Michigan), saw this scumbag's story on Rob's report and installed ALL the fences for the people in this story at cost to the company, meaning NO labor charges and NO installation costs. Yes, they lost their deposits to this scumbag, but at least they did get fences put up and at the company's cost. Wow. Wonderful people and they did it because they realized she was ripping them off - even if the fences HAD been installed - with those prices, but mostly because they felt horrible for them and wanted the community to know there ARE reputable businesses out there. KUDOS to Discount Fence.

I applaud Discount Fence for their generosity. What they did was not only commendable but they executed high quality work swiftly from what I’ve been told; which couldn’t have happened w/o Rob & Hall of Shame. THANK YOU🙌🏼
Our collective goal was to simply spread awareness to our community in hopes we’d prevent others enduring this (on-going) nightmare. For obv reasons, the segment only depicted a small fraction of the vast number of individuals similarly effected. Still, none of us could’ve imagined the silver lining! One person saying to me; what Discount did “renewed my faith in humanity” 🥲
Its my impression offers were made specific to the scenario, reasonably considering projects vary in labor/material. I’m aware a few jobs were done at no cost while others were offered installs at an incredibly low, generous rate. I was not reached out to, but understandably. A yr had lapsed so we completed our gate & fence prior to the story airing.
At current:
She has lost something like a dozen+ civil suits that she (by all appearances) has chosen to ignore.
She has plead not guilty to a now staggering ❗️10 FELONY COUNTS❗️ (at one point 11 or 12 counts acc to victim statements/public records.)
It will soon be a year since we won our case(s) yet we (along w/ MANY others) have still not received the judgments she was ordered to pay. I’ve been enduring this for almost 2yrs total, others even longer..
Thank you Discount Fence for being an example of honest business & pride in our community 🙏🏼

Several years ago, I hired a contractor to do some work on my house, luckily not a lot of money either. I gave him 50% and was told that it would take a few weeks for items to come in and be installed. After 4 weeks, I tried calling him and kept getting message saying his mailbox is full. Then I went to the police station, and a cop somehow got a hold of him, maybe he saw caller ID from Police, and he answered his call. I got my work done, but I had used Angie's list to find a good contractor. You never know who you can trust!!!!

When picking a contractor do your home work and ask people did work for them,and never ever pay a contractor in full until the job is completed and some times inspected.

I am a contractor in Oregon. My policy is to ask for $500.00 deposit to schedule your job. You make three progress payments until the job is done. If you stop paying, I stop working. Anyone asking for more then 25% of total project cost upfront is suspect.

Bad contractors make ALL contractors look bad . We must fight to rid the system of bad contractors . Complaints , and things like that must happen . No one wants to waste money and these people should not be lead to believe they would get work done but in fact they have been tricked . That’s wrong . I don’t care what kind of contractor you are , this is bad . Don’t allow people to even talk about scamming because it’s just not a good time for it . These games , these games are over . We really need to learn that Jesus Christ is giving us so much time to change but we don’t know the day he is coming back .

Never pay the full amount - I have learned that from my mom and her Roof Install for 14k..
She paid the full amount - The roof was finished. but about a year later, shingles were falling off.... I have been fixing the issues since the roof was installed...
Also, never ever, NEVER EVER, got the recommendation of a neighbor or "Friend"... They always stand to make something off the deal, and your best bet is to just ignore them, and hire a reputable business owner....
I am all for small business, but these cam artists are not to be trusted...

Never pay a contractor ANY money up front. If that company does not have working capital to buy material, they are hand to mouth, they are not legitimate. I used to do commercial banking and all legit companies have working capital.

After covid nobody wanted to work because they could sit at home and collect unemployment. That happened with all businesses. Everyone was understaffed. Then her supplier was taking money for materials and the materials never came and he fell off the face of the Earth. It's all been resolved now from what I understand and people are paid. Charges are dropped.
Don't ever give a deposit I own my own business I never ask for money till material is there at the very least most of the time I don't get paid till I'm done and cleaned up if they don't have money to supply a job they should not be in business anyway

Especially if you swindle people out of money and then act like they did nothing wrong.
Write reviews to help out others. For customers, read reviews and never give more than cost of materials until they start work. Or pay for the materials directly then structure payments in stages as work goes along. I had siding put on my house and paid as they went along. I did not follow their payment structure after the project started having problems. I owed so much by the end of the project they had to come out and fix all the problems to get the rest of their money. And I took photos all along the way, I followed up with emails whenever we had a conversation to make sure we were on the same page. When they started messing up, I posted reviews with photos and copies of our email conversations. They got right very quickly.
it only cost 180 bucks for a license in MI or less. a contractor simply bids and sets up a job, makes sure proper permits are pulled that a home owner can do at city hall themselves. I can't fault someone for trying to make a business and make money. She just couldn't get supplies due to the pandemic but people didn't want to wait for their money.
Why are people so dumb, I never pay until a job is completed.... If the company is that broke you definitely don't want to deal with them because you'll wind up just like this

Because her supplier is the one who had all the money for the supplies and then didn't come through for her, went off the radar. She had a pending case with them I believe, finally got the money and started paying the people back. From what I understand the charges are being dropped. The story left out a lot of information which makes me wonder about all of those Hall of Shame stories. They conveniently left out the fact that when she was trying to give the people their money back they wouldn't have any contact with her. They also leave out the fact that she's been in business for decades, and decades prior to that through her dad's business. It's not like she just randomly opened a business and started stealing from people. She was a victim also but her lawyer advised her not to speak on it. You can tell how hard it was for her when he's accusing her of not paying people back and she has.
If she pays those people back it will take her decades.
