She had the smallest of parts, yet there was something so special in the atmosphere whenever she was onstage in MP. You could just tell you were watching a star.
Well said! I have been a U.S. Petula fan since 1965. My first trip to London was scheduled to coincide with Petula's 90th. It was so wonderful to be part of that special night. If only Petula would get her well deserved damehood.
To walt Disney he would sit in his office and be proud and smiling written by the Sherman brothers and julie Andrew did a excellent writing and composing this masterpiece of music and jane darwell who played the bird women did a excellent job let's honor and appreciate the music I try not to get teary eyed and emotional I'm left speechless way to go very impressed way to !!!! This is such a heavy handed adaption of an absolutely beautiful song. There is no surprise that the film version of the song sung by Julie Andrews was Walt Disney's favorite song.
I totally agree with this. I never understood why they took something so perfect as the 1964 and had to mess with it in every way to create an all around lesser version for the stage. Baffling.
@@WillScarlet16 Yes. And, I have no preference either way (although I am huge Julie Andrews fan) the team for the musical wanted the stage version to hew closer to the more austere tone of the books.
Petula was 87 when the show opened and 90 when it closed. Up until 70 or so she could have played Mary Poppins, but at 90 it wouldn't have been feasible.
Sorry but I never understood this gratuitous, self-indulgent bit of casting on the part of Mackintosh and Ms. Clark. It did not need her name to sell tickets. She even got an Olivier nomination for her efforts! The original Bird Woman in 2004 was Julia Sutton who had appeared in the 1960s in a string of West End musicals including Oliver! (eventually playing Nancy) and Half a Sixpence, amongst others. She had such warmth and delivered this song with Laura Michelle Kelly in the most understated way, always moving.
In the earlier Australian stage version, Cameron M. cast Debra Byrne --pop star and former Grizabella, Fantine and Norma Desmond--as the Bird Woman, so the idea of a pop and stage star in this cameo role had already been established.
I was so fortunate to be in London to see Petula Clark in Mary Poppins on her 90 th birthday.
I love Petula Clark. She looks amazing! 90?!
May both Sherman brothers, titans of the entertainment and theatre industries, RIP. I still can't believe we lost Richard on Saturday😔😭

Felt the same way about Jane Darwell in the film.
I've always had a preferênce for this Song. And listen to it by the great Petula Clark, well that would have been Supreme!
Thank you so much for sharing this!

Roy Disney said something to the effect of "Dick Sherman was more Supercalifragilistic, while Bob Sherman was more 'Feed the Birds.'"

@@att1122-n2l It was because the author was still living and made it a requirement that the show would be different from the movie.

What a waste of Petulia Clark. Why isn't she playing Mary Poppins?
