  • How to get started as a nomad! No matter where you are starting from these steps can help to improve your life even if you never get out on the road.
    1) Stop buying anything and start saving
    2) Save up for an Emergency Fund of $3000 minimum and hopefully $6000 in savings
Make your goal to have 1 year's income in the bank!
    3) Start selling everything you can.
    4) Adopt an attitude of frugality. Shrink your life exspenses and belongings.
    5) Open your life and heart to nature! Start spending more time in nature!

I only bought small pieces of furniture to fit in my very small home. After around 500 dollars, using it for about thirty years, I have spent about 17 dollars per year on the furniture (500/30 years is about 17 dollars per year), I place one item outside on the curb with a sign every month. "Free. We are moving. Help yourself." My neighbors are benefitting and I feel better every day. 🥳

If your home is paid for, please read my advice about renting your house for extra income. I don't work in real estate so I have nothing to gain with the advice I posted. I'm going to edit my comment so people will know I am not working in real estate even though I went to real estate school about 30 years ago. It wasn't my cup of tea. The rules/laws were very bad for buyers but they have changed for the better in Texas. Hopefully they have changed in all states.

I think the main problem for most people right now is affordability of your mortgage. My home in Denver when I bought it twenty years ago was $84000 (payment around $750 dollars) with $31 HOA. I sold it for $213000 with $250 HOA payment, and it is literally the SMALLEST townhouse model in the metro area. Payment maybe $2000 more or less plus $250 per month HOA. People should not have to pay this kind of money. Found a retirement place in AZ for less than $100000.

I just purchased an ambulance. I am selling personal items to put into the ambulance.
You’re right. My past 8-10 years, even the past 28 years have been “Groundhog Day”………..
The problem I’ve having is a hard time selling. - no one is buying. But, I’m not in a hurry.
I’m just going use the ambulance this summer for weekend camping to get aquatinted to the space. Keeping my build simple. Then, hopefully spend the winter months in the Southwest.
Ahhh !! Just got a text. My solar just arrived !!!!!

Thank you Bob! You posted this video at a perfect time in my life. I'm 23 years old and I've already started making changes in my life to become a full time nomad. I'm so grateful I found your channel at a younger age so I can live a more fulfilling life without going into debt first! I'm working on getting rid of what little I own now and reducing the few bills I have even more. I'm moving across the country in 2 months and I have to fit everything I need in my tiny honda civic! From there I'll start saving as much as I can for at least a year or two until I can buy my first RV or campervan. Thank you for the inspiration :)

I’ve downsized my life over the past 7 yrs from a 1200 sf home to a rental 500 sf condo & I’m in the process of preparing for my Nomad life starting in April 2025 when I loose this rental! I lived in a 31’ c class RV for 2 yrs in my early 40’s, but missed the trappings of life! I’m now 67 & while circumstances are pushing me back into RV life, this time I’m prepared! Plan on having $6-7k in emergency fund & live off my SS, which is nice after 49 yrs working! 🎉🎉❤❤

The other day I washed my hair in the forest, using a spray bottle and a jug of water. I’m working on full time nomad now. I work one week on, one week off, and on my time off I go nomad. Even in the east there are so many places to stay! The forest rangers in the national forests are very helpful in directing me to the best dispersed campsites. Any purchases I make are geared toward my goal of full time nomad. I love this life! This gradual transition has offered me the opportunity to find what works and what doesn’t. Thanks Bob and the whole crew for guidance.

This is good direction for those of us who are waiting for our life obligations/contracts to be fulfilled. As a person who does the exact opposite in an effort to minimize the craving to hit the road I see it does little to prepare me for when the time comes. My take away from this vid is allow my wanderlust to surface but to channel it into a prep plan instead of fighting with the emotional frustration. Thank you for the insight that I just couldn't see on my own.

I have been some kind of Nomad my whole adult life. Living frugally has benefitted me greatly. I was not so not thrifty in my 20s but now in my 50s I am doing fine. I added traveling abroad to my life 12 years ago and stopped working full time 20 yrs ago. The emergency fund is number one thing people need doing this lifestyle. One breakdown can have you literally homeless if no money.

  • @syzygysyzygy8332
    @syzygysyzygy8332 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

Regardless if you plan to hit the road, save up that years income. In the last industry I was in we called it 'FU' money. Companies cannot take advantage of you if you don't need the paycheck to survive. That changes the dynamics of the work relationship. Managers always lean on crews to 'get stuff done' that is essentially unpaid work. Those of us with FU money would give 100% of our effort when the company was paying for our time and nothing extra. Managers would get guys with a boat loan, truck loan, and snow machine loan to do the 'unpaid' work because they felt like they had to.
Get your 1 year put away, it puts you back in control of your free time.

It was challenging in the beginning, sooo many questions. But even after 3 years NO regrets. I do stay in one state, I do not do all that traveling. I explore my state quite a bit but I have no desire to "See the Country". You choose how you want to do this and NONE of your doubts will matter in the first year they will all wash away.

Great general advice for most people - I would say a good gauge for an emergency fund is, minimally, enough to replace an engine and/or transmission - or buy another vehicle (for those who's circumstances don't prohibit the ability to build a nest egg)

Apartments around here start at $1200 per month !!!! plus utilities, deposits, I just can't justify me paying that kind of money... the key factor is having a gym membership so I can take a shower and do my hygiene thang (dental, shaving, changing into clean clothes).... also, I must add... that I just started a Financial Peace University (Dave Ramsey) class that has the exact same recommendations and philosophy...... Take Care Bob and all of the V-Life Community !!!

I'm glad to hear you recommending these things. I have been a bit concerned when people are being encouraged to "just do it". There is a point when making a change when it is time to take the leap, but people need to be prepared. People do need an emergency fund, and people need to "practice". I am not a nomad (yet) but I am an adventurer. I live in a tiny cabin without running water, and I regularly go solo camping. I just did 2 months in Arizona camping in my Rav4 with my cat. It was wonderful. Keeping clean with wet wipes using very little water for everything, using a sawdust toilet, camping, were not new to me. I could relax into the experience of being in the desert. I spent more money than I had planned and not from extravagance. I came back early as I was depleting my emergency fund. It was good practice for next winter, and possibly one day being a nomad.

  • @xSirDudex
    @xSirDudex 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

😂😂😂 I definitely did not build a fund. I bought and moved into an empty promaster within a 2 week span a month before my lease ended. I had only $145 in my bank account left over. But make no mistake, less than a year later, it's at $6200 and growing every month! My mid-life crisis worked out pretty, pretty good.

We are sitting in the visitors parking lot at Zion National Park in UT USA, as we listen to your video Bob. We have a van and it fantastic to have your whole house with you. We go for a morning, come back and nap, eat and then take off again for the afternoon. We sold our house last September and have been on the road since. We are on the move a lot to visit all the National Parks. Bob, you are right, have the biggest emergency fund you can get. We were hit with 2 big van breakdowns that cost over a thousand each within a month of each other. Gas is more, Food is more and no matter how much to try to save, money just goes. Having enough emergency fund will let your go with confidence.

Great encouragement.😁 I've been building my nomad and emergency fund and see it as my escape from "the system". I'm on housing assistance, and I'm greatful, but it feels like chains on me because I can't do many things to earn extra money. Getting off of housing and not making the bank and landlords rich and being more in control of my money is very liberating for me. My goal is to be on the road in 2024.😁

Thank you for another great, thought provoking video. I will likely never be with out a home base, because it is important to my husband, but that is OK. I also have an aging parent we look after. I say go and adventure when you can and use the vehicle you already own. Freedom for me is different from freedom for my spouse. We have over a year of income that is more liquid and accessible, but we are also older. It took years of living below our income to get here. Delayed gratification is required to have financial freedom. There are many types of freedom, and it is really deferred for everyone. Respect for others and their freedoms is essential for our own freedom. Thank you again for this video. Safe travels.

0:37 I really really liked this video. I want to be a part time nomad but still have a home base. It makes sense to encourage us to get outside of four walls surrounding us and enjoy nature for that is our true home. It makes sense to encourage people to try out different scenarios to see if they even would like to be a nomad plus savings. So much wisdom as always. Thank you Bob

Very good suggestions for preparing for nomad living. Some of your suggestions are also great in preparation for retirement which is where I'm at right now. I'm giving myself 2 to 3 years to pay off all debt and down sizing in other areas as well.

One thing that is a must buy is the vehicle for your journey and what you need to live off the road. But during that time you need to sell the stuff u don’t need.

Thank you Bob for this video and all the great comments.
After watching many nomads videos, I have started pretending I'm going to be a nomad and I'm slowly down sizing. I may or may not become a nomad but its good practice to be somewhat of a minimalist. We don't need so much stuff. It accumulates quickly and frankly I'm sick of it. I'm sick of my stuff. Change in mindset is on the forefront.

I go to my local flea market on Saturday’s for $20 and have been selling stuff. Have fun doing it too! 65 single and empty 🪹. Also, need to find a new canine companion, Scruffy passed during Lockdown. It is taking me longer since I only work p/t, not in a rush. My isssue is the kids, they are all over, reason I want to hit the road 💃💃💃 But, with economy, war, crime…blah, blah ……none are even remotely encouraging me to pack and go.
My secret plan is winter 2022….just discovered you! Lol I am an outdoors free spirit!

I have been working on downsizing my stuff....selling, giving away, etc. I'm in perpetual spring cleaning and waiting for a good time to sell my mobile home (that has been a problem with my park owner..not a nice guy), then I want to upgrade to a bigger van I can stand up in. I currently have a minivan and have loved the adventures I have been on so far. Thank you for your inspiration!!

Oops, I already bought a Clam quick-set canopy, a USB fan and a USB spout for my 5 gallon water bottle! On my list is screens and reflectix for the windows of my little SUV, some sort of power set-up, not sure yet what I should go with and I still have to figure out the best way to approach storage. Like I heard many van lifers say, not to try to set-it all up from the get go.
But this is for small trips in nature in preparation for a 4 to 6 weeks cross country trip in my SUV, by myself, in September. After listening to tons of videos and this one here, I figure after these trips, especially the longer one, it will let me know if I want to do this permanently or not.
I am looking into work possibilities if I decide to go permanent.
I thought about buying a used van with low mileage but frankly with the price of gas, I really prefer my small SUV for now.
This video confirms what I have gather in info so far. Thank you so much for all the info you have provided and still provide through your channel. 🙏

I think you advise is right on. I would love to take off in a van/camper. You gave a good plan: saving money, getting rid of things that you don’t need or care about and try camping or traveling weekends. Over a year or so I would feel comfortable with a plan to travel or just go camping for the summer. I may just be happy doing that. Thank you!

I agree 100%. Have a year of expenses in the bank and stop buying stuff. A quality life is about experiences (and people), not material things. I have been working on my van and putting each step of the build on my channel. I recommend several "prototype trips" so you can make adjustments to your build. I would add make a plan for your travels, not a timeline just a general direction!

Great advice about "stop buying". What most of uss want we already have (materialistically). And many THiNGS will not give us what we really want. I am personally working on reducing my possessions currently. Not an easy task! But I want to hit the road!

Some great advice even if you don’t become a nomad. Even if you are a few years from retirement, starting to reduce the amount of stuff you have is liberating. Giving away the extra stuff you have to others that need it more can be very rewarding! The idea of valuing travel and meeting new people over tending/acquiring your stuff really does make life better.

Hi Bob, I've been watching your channel for years. Because of things in my life I couldn't become a nomad, but have slowly gotten rid of items. I am on social, so having money saved up isn't an option. I live with a friend who I give rent money. Last year I purchased my cargo van. I've traveled a little in it, but not enough for my aching gypsy soul. Hoping to be on the road for good January 2023 starting with the RTR. Thank you Bob for all your advise!
