All of her songs for the Labyrinth were amazing, but her version of Magic Dance is her best rendition by far. It's so magical and fun. It's new and old at the same time.
Underground is another great one. The line, in Bowie’s voice, “Don’t tell me the truth hurts, little girl. Cause it hurts like hell...” hit me to the core and haunted me as a child. I get goosebumps even when I hear it now, it’s been a while though.
You could almost see him in a paternal role with gestures and facial ticks. It was obvious he was a little uncomfortable. Jennifer Connelly played it perfect, I've been told it's allegory to a girl's wish to be a woman. Which it totally conveyed.
Yes! I agree, and his music generally was so forward-thinking and innovative that you forget how beautiful his voice is. This soundtrack really shows off how amazing he was to capture the fantasy feeling and his vocal talent. It would not be the same movie without him!
I remember that the first time we watched this, I was very impressed with David Bowie’s performance throughout the film. It was also very nice to hear his ’Star Man’ song in ‘The Martian’.
One fact that should have got a quick mention. When the Goblin King is twirling the crystal balls in his hand and moving them around his arm. There was a guy behind David Bowie actually doing that trick.

The reason Jared looks like he does is because it's HER fantasy. In "the real world", one of her idols is Bowies character seen in the clippings on her wall, so in her mind she projects the way he looks on the goblin king. It's many a young women's innocent fantasy to have an older man show interest in them. Shes on the brink of sexual awakening. Her room is filled with other references that she brings in to her labyrinth fantasy.
According to the Jim Henson biography, it was Jim Henson's son Brian who suggested casting David Bowie as the Goblin King over Sting because he felt Bowie was more iconic.

If you look at the page in Sarah's scrapbook, 7:25 timestamp, there is a picture of her mother and her together - surrounding the pictures are playbills from her mother's plays, and articles with her mother with David Bowie - it's mentioned in the movie that her mom is famous, and that she has a new husband. One of the articles says she has been in an on and off again relationship with someone and it's been on again, with a picture of her and David. Now, it doesn't say the name David, but that is who we can probably assume is the mother's new husband, making him somewhat the love interest/villain in her fantasy.
That’s true of far too many really enjoyable films. Also that so many times critics will bash a film that becomes a classic or is a pleasure to watch, and then give some of the most boring, waste of time films rave reviews!
This is probably why we don't get any new films as iconic as those...we all love them, but the studios don't want to "waste" the money on them. We wouldn't see their like again until LotR and the Hobbit.
I have an amazing fact: my father's cousin, Ian Rolph, worked on this film (the worm and the wiseman) and sympathized with David Bowie who gave him the necklace he wore as the goblin king. Ian sadly passed away in 2012 (I still miss him very much) and I inherited said necklace. I have photos to prove it. Jenifer was a 14yo playing a 14yo and yes it was intentionally creepy, there is a subtext.... I won't explain, fans will understand. I was always a massive fan of Labyrinth but only learned about my family connection to the film after the death of Ian Rolph so I never got to talk to him about it, I'm gutted to this day.

A few things on the video. The giant creature is Ludo not Pluto. David Bowie wrote Magic Dance so I it seems he was the one who liked the hoodoo movie line. Why does David Bowie appear in Jennifer Connely's room in acticle clippings? Because EVERYTHING in the fantasy world of Labyrinth can be seen in her room before the adventure begins. Much like with Dorthy in the Wizard of Oz, Sarah carries things from her world into this fantasy land with her. You can see things like stuffed versions of Ludo and Sir Didymus in her room as well as other toys and object representing things she will encounter in the Labyrinth. A deeper look into the film might also indicate a fan crush on David Bowie. Sarah is growing into a young woman, and that indicates becoming sexually aware too. Jareth tries to woo her throught the film and lets not forget that unsubtle croth of his. The ballroom scene is very seductive and the final song in the film is about his being rejected by someone he loves. There was even a line in an early draft of the script where the Goblin King tells Sarah that he'd rather have a Goblin Queen than a Goblin Prince. The film has a lot of depth to it for a flight of fantasy.
Well said, but to add to what you said about the the clippings of Bowie in Sarah's room, Jim Henson commented on that in at least one interview. He said that Jareth was always meant to be a rock star, a young girls fantasy. That's why he wanted a real rock star to play the role. So, what do teenage girls do with their fantasy men? They put pictures of them all over their room!
I would even suggest that the presence of Bowie in the clippings is actually her mother's new husband. In the one clipping we see there's an article about her mother who is some kind of actress or famous personality, with her new beau. It would make sense since Bowie plays the villian in her fantasy, and Sarah is clearly struggling with her parents' divorce.
At one point Jareth who consantly miss pronounces Hoggle´s name calls him Hogwarts. I wonder if J.K Rowling heard that and used it in Harry Potter because of it.
Martin Dummatzen Having never seen or read Harry Potter it wouldn't surprise me. Someone did a comedy video (look up "Lord of the Potter") highlighting the similarities between it and the Lord of the Rings, and it seems like she ripped off of Tolkien quite a bit.
JK Rowling was about as original as a Kareoke singer. It's all ripped off Tolkien, Pratchett and whatever else she could get her hands on, even her goblins were ripped off old anti semitic propaganda

Still to this day listen to the soundtrack,...just bought this movie in 4K hdr,but like many 4K titles its way to grainy,....the 1080p version looks better

The part I love the most about all the '80s fantasy films technically isn't "movie trivia", or even that the soundtracks were so epic we still love them today...it's that in Los Angeles, with the exception of 2020, there's a costume party called the Labyrinth of Jareth or, more commonly, the Labyrinth Masquerade. It's no longer directly inspired by the film but has spun off its own lore in the style of the '80s fantasy films, but some folks still attend dressed as Jareth or Sarah. In the meantime, imagine any Halloween party you've been to, where costumes range from store-bought to whatever your friends felt like making...now imagine what a Halloween party would look like if attended by some of the best costumers and make-up artists from Hollywood, local renaissance faires, cosplay conventions, and college theater departments...my profile picture is from myself attending in 2013 or so. THAT's how iconic and beloved this film is...it shows the power of fantasy and imagination, and brings out the best in us.
Yeah, why do they let things like that happen? (Although, from the "Pawn Stars" and other shows that do memorabilia, I know that foam they use deteriorates very badly. I have a couple of tools--my airbrush is one--that was packed in form-fitting foam that's crumbling rapidly, after _only_ 40 years, so I do understand the fragility issue. But for pity's sake, it's _Hollywood_ so there must be lots of people who could've refurbished it!)
@@jc.1191 Yes, I remember that from my early days around electronic equipment. My brother was an electronics nut, very interested in 1940s radios and TVs (when he could get his hands on them. I later studied electronic instrumentation and control, but couldn't hack the math, so years later, when I tried to finish some of the projects of the course, I had old-fashioned condensers melt (the waxy kind) or produce a horrible-smelling smoke (if it was encased). I've also had rubber insulation on things crumble and become downright dangerous. (Sadly, my old body feels like it's past it's shelf life, too.) Stay safe.
It's really hard to imagine anyone else in the role of Jarrett, Bowie just WAS that character. It's a shame he didn't take more work in acting, because he always nailed it in the roles he did take.
He has acted in a few films. I believe last time I saw him was as Nikola Tesla in The Prestige. Bowie is perfect as Jareth, but I agree with youtuber Mark in that I could kinda see Sting for the role as well.. though I doubt it would've been as great!
Fun fact: Labyrinth's costume designer actually designed David Bowie's tights to purposefully accentuate his..... uh..... nether region. And boy, did it ever work!
Lots of people keep watching (and complaining about) the crotch - I really can not imagene why. Totally fits the rockstar image as wel as the classic prince-in-thights portrayed in thousands and thousands of storybooks, so ... what else should he be wearing? Also ... he is a real boy instead of all the ken-dolls in cartoons, isn't that also part of the " whoa this is real and not fantasy?" theme of the film?

First time I saw this was in high school when my mom bought my sister the DVD for her birthday. We watched it almost every day for months. I admit I did have a little crush on David Bowie.
Many years of being an adult, serving as a combat vet in the Army, and numerous other bs that goes with "adulting," but I can always count on you Minty to take me back to my childhood and bring back memories of a simpler time...
"You remind me of the man..." I think maybe the line was chosen because that film starred an older leading man with a young girl, just like Labyrinth itself.
As someone who's read the graphic novel- highly recommend. It's super entertaining. Basically, Jareth's given Toby everything he's ever wanted since leaving the labyrinth, and Toby hates it. Because if he thinks something like 'That guy was a jerk, I hope he breaks his leg-" BOOM! broken leg. And he doesn't know why this is happening. One night, a goblin steals his homework and while chasing it, he stumbles back into the world of the Labyrinth. Which gets WAY more fleshed out. Jareth then spontaneously decides he's done ruling, and the Goblin city is Toby's problem now. But, uh oh! foreign rulers want to take over the throne! And now Toby has to deal with all of THAT.
I so love this movie. I'm 51 and was thrilled when it came out on DVD, so I could stop wearing out VHS tapes of it. HUGE crush on Jareth back then and still a little bit now.
***CREEPY DAVID BOWIE BULGE EXPLAINED*** there was an interview in with the extras of the labyrinth movie where Jim Henson is explaining the creepy Chemistry Between the obsession of David Bowie's character to the main female character.... basically what most people don't realize about the movie is that it's depicting the girl who is transitioning from a child to an adult. (puberty) and the creepiness of David Bowie represents an awkward sexual attraction and that famous bulge is basically there to convey that type of creepy sexual confusion that she doesn' understand due to the change in body and herself. on top of that she's also trying to fight the changes in her life such as trying to coexist with her new Stepmother and the new responsibilities from babysitting which also would explain the scene where her dad is giving her a lecture after she shows up late and why she wished the baby never existed so everything can go back to the way it was before 😬👍
Before I re-introduced myself to this movie back in 2001, I remembered seeing it as a kid but the only scenes I could remember were The Ballroom Scene and Sarah confronts Jareth in the Escher Room. Strong moments in the film I must add. I watch it whenever it comes on TV, even tho' I own the DVD which I almost wore out back in 2004-05....and can quote the ENTIRE dialogue from start to finish. Labyrinth is that movie I *truly* wished had a sequel that stars the original cast BUT with Bowie gone, it wouldn't be the same without our Goblin King....UNLESS someone wrote a script that *could* work around that. Now I'm hearing some lady wanted to do a ''sequel'' to this classic that really won't be a tie-in to the original....I honestly hope she doesn't make it because I get the feeling it won't have that ''magic'' Labyrinth has. 8:40 If you thought THAT was ''creepy'' Jareth trying to kiss Sarah during the Ballroom scene, then you are *not* aware of the novel 'Labyrinth' where it shows Jareth WAS originally supposed to do that in the actual movie, BUT with Sarah being a 15 yr old and Jareth an older man, it wasn't going to come across right with the US audience. ....which is why in the music video 'As the World Falls Down' they had an older actress play Sarah instead of Jennifer herself, something that never made sense to me regardless. ...and on a side note, if you listen carefully to the song ''As the World...''' you *can* hear Jennifer in the [refrain?], it's not loud but it is her.

I always saw Bowie as the real hero in this one. He fulfilled her every fantasy because he was in love with her, and she was all "Me, me, me." She didn't deserve him.
I know, dammit. XD Sarah made a mistake. However, he was a little pushy. I would have loved to have seen that sequel and seen her start wishing for him again when she became a woman seeking a partner.
I couldn’t finish this it’s like you just looked up facts instead of researching and you got so many concepts wrong & so called facts . as a big fan of this movie it was painful to sit through this and the “ relationship “ between Jereth and Sara is suppose to be creepy, his real world self the one in pictures is in a relationship with her mom she attracted to him but at the same time repulsed because he’s her moms lover / husband in real life and in her dream evil because he took her brother...the whole movie is basically a battle against her attraction to him and all the crazy emotions she’s going through as a young woman who’s jealous of her new brother and mothers husband/ boyfriend and is being made to grow up and leave her childhood behind
Her mother in this movie is her stepmother so your wrong about her attraction and repulsion of her mothers husband. That's her dad. Her step mother even makes a comment about being treated as the wicked stepmother no matter what she does. You should probably rewatch it before giving a critique about the movie since you have it wrong.
The reason you see Jareth in her room early on was the ending, when at first it was suggested that it was all a dream. Almost all of the movie can be found in her room which is incredible.
Minty, it's probably because you're not female that you don't get it but that scene with Jennifer's character and Jareth dancing with her is a HELL of a lot more sexy than the comic book. As a teenager when I first saw that movie that scene made me tingle down to my toes. The innuendo was oozing out of Bowie and she was almost completely under his spell. Yes, it might have been a bit creepy because of the age difference but the difference didn't bother me one bit. I wanted that evil man in those tight pants and I didn't care how old he was.
How did this movie not kill at the box office? I watched it on VHS at one of my buddy's birthday parties when I was probably 10 years old and instantly loved it!! My sons love it now too. Such a FANTASTIC movie!! Excellent story, music, acting, effects.....everything about it is brilliant!!
One of my favorite movies.(I'm in my 50's) I'm not really a fan of Jennifer Connelly or David Bowie( no particular reason) but they're great together. I love the beginning and end song Underground. And Chilly Down sung by the fireies( however you spell it) I ABSOLUTELY LOVE "Sarah's" hair and gown in the ballroom scene. I even tried to copy "Jareth's" make up. I could go on and on, it's just a great movie. I got the VHS not long after it came out. And have watched it many times. Hmmm... I'll have to watch it again soon, it's been awhile.
The reason that there are pictures of Bowie in Sarah's room is that the whole thing takes place in her mind. She has stuffed animals and toys that resemble all the major creatures in the film.
The one thing which I thought argued against this. IIRC, Sarah first meets Jareth in her bedroom and is returned to the house in the living room. I know that is a bit of a nit-pick, but the Dungeons and Dragons in me says not in her dreams.
This. Obviously stories/movies don't say conclusively and rather leave that up to the viewer, but here it's hinted quite strongly at. And thinking about it critically, how else would one explain the creatures of the Labyrinth to have real life counterparts in shape of toys and picture scraps? You could come up with something, of course, but it's generally going to be a lot more convoluted explanation than the simple one, that's it's all in her imagination.
@2mwillis No. The makers of the fantasy epic "Creature Features" - what _The Dark Crystal_ (and its Netflix prequel) & _The Labyrinth_ both are - particularly envisioned the latter of the two as a coming-of-age allegory for teenage female evolution from girlish childhood to adult womanhood.
The Bowie in Sarah's Scrap book and mirror are supposed to be her mother's lover (the novelization). Everything in The Labyrinth exists in some form in Sarah's reality and of course the villain takes the form of the man who took her mother. The Labyrinth is symbolic of self-exploration, growing up.
This movie is so much fun! I think Sarah, Hoggle, and Jareth underwent the greatest changes throughout the movie, with Sarah growing up, Hoggle learning what it means to be a friend, and Jareth falling in love. The movie would not have been the same without David Bowie, or Jennifer Connelly for that matter, even though her performance was panned by critics. She certainly looked the part of Sarah, and while delivery and most definitely script could have been better, she did the best with what she was given. Plus she was still pretty green as an actress at the time. All of that aside, overall the movie is chaotic and at times creepy, but it's still so much fun. :)
There's newspaper clippings though and it seems he was a celebrity crush for Sarah. Of course, she seems to want to be an actress, maybe her mom was an actress and she'd met him before through her mom?
This was a lovely look back at such an iconic film. I had Labyrinth on VHS tape when I was younger and I actually watched it so often I snapped the tape. I was devastated. I have 2 problems with this list though. Firstly, how can you do a clip like this and get a characters name wrong, or not know it at all? The evil red things were called Fireys, and the big red monster was called Ludo, not Pluto! And secondly, you can't have a fact list like this and not acknowledge the genius that was Michael Moschen. Michael was actually the one who juggled the glass balls. It was an amazingly difficult task because he had to be hidden behind Bowie and therefore couldn't see the globes, so he was basically juggling blind.
I can't see Michael Jackson in the role of Jareth, where I'm so used to David who did the role phenomenally. Mick Jagger would've been different. Sting definitely could've done it for sure but like Minty says - it would've been more of a dramatic role. One that I think would've been effing phenomenal -- even more so than David - and he HAD the voice to do it -- but he was just getting the diagnosis of his illness - so wouldn't have taken it on for that reason the other being he probably didn't want to act - since he was doing music...but he DEFINITELY could've done it had he been healthy, interested and had the voice, moves, and would've most likely had no problem with the costume(s). Only one other person comes to mind other than David -- and that person is: the late, hypnotic & mesmerizing Freddie Mercury ***Edited to add*** I recently found out that Freddie at one point had been considered for this part - don't remind where I found it out from, but if I find out where I'll post it - I could've totally seen Freddie in this role! ...I had to pause the video to express my amazement at the hidden ‘faces’ fact, I remember spotting the first one but not the others. Always found that kind of wild, this movie has much too it even after several watchings there’s usually something you didn’t see before. But wonderful collection of facts, I remember reading the anime books when those came out...rather fascinating stories but still an actual movie would’ve been so mind blowingly amazing.
If you read the book it explains the scrapbook clippings - her mother had a new boyfriend and the description of him is very much like Jareth Another comic book series was released in 2018 and explored Jareths origin story The Fireys scared me too !
We had the best movies growing up in the 80’s. The part when she thinks she’s home in her room but then it all falls apart really freaked me out as a kid.

I've read it and hell, I've read better fan fictions than that waste of ink and paper. xP I would've preferred to see MirrorMask, which was originally intended to be the sequel, reinstated as such. Brian Froud also mentions in the Making Of documentary of Labyrinth that infamous tight pants were intentional, as well as how he describes what influences he used to make the Goblin King. He's part death knight, part Brothers Grimm fairy tale, part rock star, part bad boy. He is supposed to be a teenage girl's fantasy villain, and boy did the amazing David Bowie pull that off flawlessly.
David Bowie and his sensual mild-aggressiveness REALLY did it for me when I was 15. Like Disney princes for some, David Bowie's character was my fantasy. In fact my life partner, has a "look" that is very similar to one of the looks Jareth gives Sarah in the ballroom scene. Of course we had to go to the 20th anniversary Labyrinth ball in LA in 2017.
I remember those good Ol’ days when us Gen Xer’s loved watching great movies like Legend, Labyrinth, Flight of The Navigator, Weird Science, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, E.T., Space Camp, The Goonies, Dragon Slayer, Willow, and The Never Ending Story! When Molly Ringwald stole our hearts with her roles in Sixteen Candles and Pretty In Pink and Matthew Broderick kept us guessing about Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and his Weekend at Bernie’s! Micheal J. Fox was a dreamboat and we all agreed that Back to the Future was the most EPIC movie to ever grace the silver screen! We all swore nothing could EVER top it! Patrick Swayze set the soundtrack of the summer with his Dirty Dancing and we girls all wanted to be nicknamed “Baby” by our boyfriends! A lot of young women swore on spit handshakes that they would absolutely marry Jon Bon Jovi the lead singers of White Snake, Def Lepard, or Poison. The sirens of our day graced our ears with voices that moved your soul and your body and Gloria Estefan made dang sure that the rhythm was gonna get you! Strong and talented singers like; Debbie Gibson, Tiffany, Pat Benatar, and The Bangles! But nothing, NOTHING could top the voices of Madonna, Cyndi Lauper and Whitney Houston! And although all the parents considered her to be too riské and provocative that didn’t stop all of us girls from using eye brow and eyeliner pencils to draw in that, oh so famous, mole over one side of our upper lip and begging our parents to please let us dye our, (already destroyed from all the Aqua net hairspray and hours of teasing it to the sky), hair bright orange and yellow so we could sing “True Colors” at the top of our little lungs into our hairbrushes and curling irons! The two Corey’s, (Corey Feldman and Corey Haim), always made us laugh in hits like License to Drive and The Lost Boys and their faces were plastered all over our bedrooms in the posters covering our walls! We latch key kids would come home to after school specials, Saved By The Bell, and Kids Incorporated and when we were done with those we would switch on our Atari’s for hours of Joust, Pong, Centipede, Donkey Kong, or PacMan! On the nights our parents worked super late, we put our aluminum foil TV Dinner trays in the oven and with the 45-55 minutes it took to cook we would lay on our beds and call all our friends because we just knew that so much had already happened in the two to three short hours since we left school! We all needed to know who had a crush on who and did she REALLY “french kiss” him??? Our rooms were treasure troves of our, (what we considered “well spent”), allowances which included walls covered in Tiger Beat and Teen posters and penny candy stashes of our favorites like sour patch kids, Cherry Chanzs , Nerds and our secrets diaries with the little locks on them were safely hidden under our pillows! On the nights our parents didn’t have to work, we stayed out until the street lights came on and then hurriedly pedaled our banana seat bicycles as fast as we could to make it home in time to help our mothers set the table for dinner. We all sat around the table as a family sharing our adventures from the day and when our tummies were full, our Moms would disappear into the kitchen to grab desert, in which we somehow always had enough room in our stuffed full stomachs for! After dinner, Dad would retire to the living room where he would light his pipe or cigar and enjoy the news, followed by Wheel of Fortune and then Jeopardy! On the weekend we gathered in fields to play Wiffle Ball, Red Rover and Freeze Tag. NOT IT!!! Being chose last didn’t mad you sad or mad, it simply encouraged you to do better! Fights were solved by talking it out and if they got super serious, an occasional tackle. We swore that our older sisters and brothers were the smartest people we’d ever met and we strived to be just like them but our younger siblings drove us nuts however we were the ONLY ones who could insult them. The neighbors were all friends with one another and were always happy to look after your house when your family went on vacation and vice versa. Anything on the ice cream truck only cost 25 cents and on hot summer days, we ran through sprinklers drank straight out of garden hoses and made homemade slip-n-slides with tarps, trash bags and dishsoap. Our Dads were always telling us stories from his “good ol days” while teaching us something and Mom was still the most beautiful thing we knew we would ever lay our eyes on! The local store took checks, carried out your groceries in paper bags and said “Thank you” with a big ol’ smile every single time you came! Those were the days ya’ll! Those were the good ol’ days!

The people who made this movie and the Dark Crystal are GIANTS of fantasy invention.

Why is it all these cult classics were box office bowms but become treasured years later? Bowie simply excels and is magnetic, blending charm with menace sublimely, as Jareth. Nobody could come close to doing "tra la la" with genuine style. If Jareth was to be a puppet, I'd hate to see the string. Henson was right, he had to be human. And oh what a human! 80s animatronics was pioneering, especially with thebprimitive state of the technology available. A shame that Hoggle's puppet would end up worse off than the Pinto who got tapped on the back. Great points on Jackson and Jagger. Not sure why so many are traumatized by the movie. I'm just in awe.
Generally speaking I'm not into musicals. I never really thought about Labyrinth as a musical but yeah it's at least 50/50 (if not more) musical. I don't like musicals but I am a Bowie fan more or less. The song As The Word Falls Down is one of the most beautiful things that exists to my mind.

I think you be got the David Bowie being seen all over in the movie wrong , you missed this whole piece actually that everything seen in her room in the beginning is alive in the world where the labyrinth is including jareth and you can see Ludo other characters are stuffed toys about her room ,what that says to me is were almost believing she just fell asleep and is having a dream much like the wizard of oz where everything in her real life is represented by something in oz. Feel me? It's not that he was watching her although it's not a terrible idea either but yeah.
I was thinking something a bit similar. My thought was that Sarah's room is essentially a to the whole movie. So, it could be that those photos could actually be sort of a of David Bowie as David Bowie. Think in the terms that maybe Sarah was a David Bowie fan. So then Jareth takes on the image of Bowie as just another example of his building that whole side around her. What would have been weird (but cool also) is if there was a copy of an album or poster of Bowie's in her room.
According to the novelisation, the figure of Jareth was based on a famous actor or showman her mother was dating. That's the reason for all those scraps from newspapers on her mirror.
@@francescoamadio4311 The thing which confused me in the movie was that her boyfriend was not in the film, but Jareth was. You could easily miss those news clippings (I did). If they somehow worked it in where Bowie had a scene playing the boyfriend, that might have explained it better.

Underground is another great one. The line, in Bowie’s voice, “Don’t tell me the truth hurts, little girl. Cause it hurts like hell...” hit me to the core and haunted me as a child. I get goosebumps even when I hear it now, it’s been a while though.
I have to agree with that one. It definitely is a song that gets to you. And it's the theme song of the whole adventure.
The near kiss in the comic makes sense as apparently Jareth was supposed to kiss Sarah, but Bowie refused to do it because of Jennifer being underage.
You could almost see him in a paternal role with gestures and facial ticks. It was obvious he was a little uncomfortable. Jennifer Connelly played it perfect, I've been told it's allegory to a girl's wish to be a woman. Which it totally conveyed.

Yes! I agree, and his music generally was so forward-thinking and innovative that you forget how beautiful his voice is. This soundtrack really shows off how amazing he was to capture the fantasy feeling and his vocal talent. It would not be the same movie without him!
I remember that the first time we watched this, I was very impressed with David Bowie’s performance throughout the film. It was also very nice to hear his ’Star Man’ song in ‘The Martian’.
I can kind of see Sting in the role, though it would have been a quite different and probably rather darker movie. Jagger or Jackson ... not so much.
The only person I could possibly see is Prince, but Bowie is a way better actor.
One fact that should have got a quick mention. When the Goblin King is twirling the crystal balls in his hand and moving them around his arm. There was a guy behind David Bowie actually doing that trick.

The reason Jared looks like he does is because it's HER fantasy. In "the real world", one of her idols is Bowies character seen in the clippings on her wall, so in her mind she projects the way he looks on the goblin king. It's many a young women's innocent fantasy to have an older man show interest in them. Shes on the brink of sexual awakening. Her room is filled with other references that she brings in to her labyrinth fantasy.

If you look at the page in Sarah's scrapbook, 7:25 timestamp, there is a picture of her mother and her together - surrounding the pictures are playbills from her mother's plays, and articles with her mother with David Bowie - it's mentioned in the movie that her mom is famous, and that she has a new husband. One of the articles says she has been in an on and off again relationship with someone and it's been on again, with a picture of her and David. Now, it doesn't say the name David, but that is who we can probably assume is the mother's new husband, making him somewhat the love interest/villain in her fantasy.

That’s true of far too many really enjoyable films. Also that so many times critics will bash a film that becomes a classic or is a pleasure to watch, and then give some of the most boring, waste of time films rave reviews!
This is probably why we don't get any new films as iconic as those...we all love them, but the studios don't want to "waste" the money on them. We wouldn't see their like again until LotR and the Hobbit.

I have an amazing fact: my father's cousin, Ian Rolph, worked on this film (the worm and the wiseman) and sympathized with David Bowie who gave him the necklace he wore as the goblin king. Ian sadly passed away in 2012 (I still miss him very much) and I inherited said necklace. I have photos to prove it.
Jenifer was a 14yo playing a 14yo and yes it was intentionally creepy, there is a subtext.... I won't explain, fans will understand. I was always a massive fan of Labyrinth but only learned about my family connection to the film after the death of Ian Rolph so I never got to talk to him about it, I'm gutted to this day.

A few things on the video. The giant creature is Ludo not Pluto. David Bowie wrote Magic Dance so I it seems he was the one who liked the hoodoo movie line. Why does David Bowie appear in Jennifer Connely's room in acticle clippings? Because EVERYTHING in the fantasy world of Labyrinth can be seen in her room before the adventure begins. Much like with Dorthy in the Wizard of Oz, Sarah carries things from her world into this fantasy land with her. You can see things like stuffed versions of Ludo and Sir Didymus in her room as well as other toys and object representing things she will encounter in the Labyrinth.
A deeper look into the film might also indicate a fan crush on David Bowie. Sarah is growing into a young woman, and that indicates becoming sexually aware too. Jareth tries to woo her throught the film and lets not forget that unsubtle croth of his. The ballroom scene is very seductive and the final song in the film is about his being rejected by someone he loves. There was even a line in an early draft of the script where the Goblin King tells Sarah that he'd rather have a Goblin Queen than a Goblin Prince. The film has a lot of depth to it for a flight of fantasy.

He said that Jareth was always meant to be a rock star, a young girls fantasy. That's why he wanted a real rock star to play the role. So, what do teenage girls do with their fantasy men? The part I love the most about all the '80s fantasy films technically isn't "movie trivia", or even that the soundtracks were so epic we still love them today...it's that in Los Angeles, with the exception of 2020, there's a costume party called the Labyrinth of Jareth or, more commonly, the Labyrinth Masquerade. It's no longer directly inspired by the film but has spun off its own lore in the style of the '80s fantasy films, but some folks still attend dressed as Jareth or Sarah. In the meantime, imagine any Halloween party you've been to, where costumes range from store-bought to whatever your friends felt like making...now imagine what a Halloween party would look like if attended by some of the best costumers and make-up artists from Hollywood, local renaissance faires, cosplay conventions, and college theater departments...my profile picture is from myself attending in 2013 or so. THAT's how iconic and beloved this film is...it shows the power of fantasy and imagination, and brings out the best in us.

Yeah, why do they let things like that happen? (Although, from the "Pawn Stars" and other shows that do memorabilia, I know that foam they use deteriorates very badly. I have a couple of tools--my airbrush is one--that was packed in form-fitting foam that's crumbling rapidly, after _only_ 40 years, so I do understand the fragility issue. But for pity's sake, it's _Hollywood_ so there must be lots of people who could've refurbished it!)

@@jc.1191 Yes, I remember that from my early days around electronic equipment. My brother was an electronics nut, very interested in 1940s radios and TVs (when he could get his hands on them. I later studied electronic instrumentation and control, but couldn't hack the math, so years later, when I tried to finish some of the projects of the course, I had old-fashioned condensers melt (the waxy kind) or produce a horrible-smelling smoke (if it was encased). I've also had rubber insulation on things crumble and become downright dangerous. (Sadly, my old body feels like it's past it's shelf life, too.) Stay safe.

First time I saw this was in high school when my mom bought my sister the DVD for her birthday. We watched it almost every day for months.

Many years of being an adult, serving as a combat vet in the Army, and numerous other bs that goes with "adulting," but I can always count on you Minty to take me back to my childhood and bring back memories of a simpler time...
"You remind me of the man..." I think maybe the line was chosen because that film starred an older leading man with a young girl, just like Labyrinth itself.
there's also the fact that bowie wrote all the songs for the movie. so had someone else been cast the movie could've been way different music-wise.
As someone who's read the graphic novel- highly recommend. It's super entertaining. Basically, Jareth's given Toby everything he's ever wanted since leaving the labyrinth, and Toby hates it. Because if he thinks something like 'That guy was a jerk, I hope he breaks his leg-" BOOM! broken leg. And he doesn't know why this is happening. One night, a goblin steals his homework and while chasing it, he stumbles back into the world of the Labyrinth. Which gets WAY more fleshed out. Jareth then spontaneously decides he's done ruling, and the Goblin city is Toby's problem now. But, uh oh! foreign rulers want to take over the throne! And now Toby has to deal with all of THAT.
Jim Henson is such an important figure in puppetry and special effects!

I so love this movie. I'm 51 and was thrilled when it came out on DVD, so I could stop wearing out VHS tapes of it. HUGE crush on Jareth back then and still a little bit now.

there was an interview in with the extras of the labyrinth movie where Jim Henson is explaining the creepy Chemistry Between the obsession of David Bowie's character to the main female character.... basically what most people don't realize about the movie is that it's depicting the girl who is transitioning from a child to an adult. (puberty) and the creepiness of David Bowie represents an awkward sexual attraction and that famous bulge is basically there to convey that type of creepy sexual confusion that she doesn' understand due to the change in body and herself. on top of that she's also trying to fight the changes in her life such as trying to coexist with her new Stepmother and the new responsibilities from babysitting which also would explain the scene where her dad is giving her a lecture after she shows up late and why she wished the baby never existed so everything can go back to the way it was before

Before I re-introduced myself to this movie back in 2001, I remembered seeing it as a kid but the only scenes I could remember were The Ballroom Scene and Sarah confronts Jareth in the Escher Room. Strong moments in the film I must add.
I watch it whenever it comes on TV, even tho' I own the DVD which I almost wore out back in 2004-05....and can quote the ENTIRE dialogue from start to finish.
Labyrinth is that movie I *truly* wished had a sequel that stars the original cast BUT with Bowie gone, it wouldn't be the same without our Goblin King....UNLESS someone wrote a script that *could* work around that. Now I'm hearing some lady wanted to do a ''sequel'' to this classic that really won't be a tie-in to the original....I honestly hope she doesn't make it because I get the feeling it won't have that ''magic'' Labyrinth has.
8:40 If you thought THAT was ''creepy'' Jareth trying to kiss Sarah during the Ballroom scene, then you are *not* aware of the novel 'Labyrinth' where it shows Jareth WAS originally supposed to do that in the actual movie, BUT with Sarah being a 15 yr old and Jareth an older man, it wasn't going to come across right with the US audience.
....which is why in the music video 'As the World Falls Down' they had an older actress play Sarah instead of Jennifer herself, something that never made sense to me regardless.
...and on a side note, if you listen carefully to the song ''As the World...''' you *can* hear Jennifer in the [refrain?], it's not loud but it is her.

I always saw Bowie as the real hero in this one. He fulfilled her every fantasy because he was in love with her, and she was all "Me, me, me." She didn't deserve him.

I know, dammit. XD Sarah made a mistake. However, he was a little pushy. I would have loved to have seen that sequel and seen her start wishing for him again when she became a woman seeking a partner.
I couldn’t finish this it’s like you just looked up facts instead of researching and you got so many concepts wrong & so called facts . as a big fan of this movie it was painful to sit through this and the “ relationship “ between Jereth and Sara is suppose to be creepy, his real world self the one in pictures is in a relationship with her mom she attracted to him but at the same time repulsed because he’s her moms lover / husband in real life and in her dream evil because he took her brother...the whole movie is basically a battle against her attraction to him and all the crazy emotions she’s going through as a young woman who’s jealous of her new brother and mothers husband/ boyfriend and is being made to grow up and leave her childhood behind

Her mother in this movie is her stepmother so your wrong about her attraction and repulsion of her mothers husband. That's her dad. Her step mother even makes a comment about being treated as the wicked stepmother no matter what she does. You should probably rewatch it before giving a critique about the movie since you have it wrong.
The reason you see Jareth in her room early on was the ending, when at first it was suggested that it was all a dream. Almost all of the movie can be found in her room which is incredible.
Minty, it's probably because you're not female that you don't get it but that scene with Jennifer's character and Jareth dancing with her is a HELL of a lot more sexy than the comic book. As a teenager when I first saw that movie that scene made me tingle down to my toes. The innuendo was oozing out of Bowie and she was almost completely under his spell. Yes, it might have been a bit creepy because of the age difference but the difference didn't bother me one bit. I wanted that evil man in those tight pants and I didn't care how old he was.
How did this movie not kill at the box office? I watched it on VHS at one of my buddy's birthday parties when I was probably 10 years old and instantly loved it!! My sons love it now too. Such a FANTASTIC movie!! Excellent story, music, acting, effects.....everything about it is brilliant!!

One of my favorite movies.(I'm in my 50's) I'm not really a fan of Jennifer Connelly or David Bowie( no particular reason) but they're great together. I love the beginning and end song Underground. And Chilly Down sung by the fireies( however you spell it) I ABSOLUTELY LOVE "Sarah's" hair and gown in the ballroom scene. I even tried to copy "Jareth's" make up. I could go on and on, it's just a great movie. I got the VHS not long after it came out. And have watched it many times. Hmmm... I'll have to watch it again soon, it's been awhile.
The reason that there are pictures of Bowie in Sarah's room is that the whole thing takes place in her mind. She has stuffed animals and toys that resemble all the major creatures in the film.
The one thing which I thought argued against this. IIRC, Sarah first meets Jareth in her bedroom and is returned to the house in the living room. I know that is a bit of a nit-pick, but the Dungeons and Dragons in me says not in her dreams.
This. Obviously stories/movies don't say conclusively and rather leave that up to the viewer, but here it's hinted quite strongly at. And thinking about it critically, how else would one explain the creatures of the Labyrinth to have real life counterparts in shape of toys and picture scraps? You could come up with something, of course, but it's generally going to be a lot more convoluted explanation than the simple one, that's it's all in her imagination.

@2mwillis No. The makers of the fantasy epic "Creature Features" - what _The Dark Crystal_ (and its Netflix prequel) & _The Labyrinth_ both are - particularly envisioned the latter of the two as a coming-of-age allegory for teenage female evolution from girlish childhood to adult womanhood.

The Bowie in Sarah's Scrap book and mirror are supposed to be her mother's lover (the novelization). Everything in The Labyrinth exists in some form in Sarah's reality and of course the villain takes the form of the man who took her mother. The Labyrinth is symbolic of self-exploration, growing up.
This movie is so much fun! I think Sarah, Hoggle, and Jareth underwent the greatest changes throughout the movie, with Sarah growing up, Hoggle learning what it means to be a friend, and Jareth falling in love. The movie would not have been the same without David Bowie, or Jennifer Connelly for that matter, even though her performance was panned by critics. She certainly looked the part of Sarah, and while delivery and most definitely script could have been better, she did the best with what she was given. Plus she was still pretty green as an actress at the time. All of that aside, overall the movie is chaotic and at times creepy, but it's still so much fun. :)

This was a lovely look back at such an iconic film. I had Labyrinth on VHS tape when I was younger and I actually watched it so often I snapped the tape. I was devastated. I have 2 problems with this list though. Firstly, how can you do a clip like this and get a characters name wrong, or not know it at all? The evil red things were called Fireys, and the big red monster was called Ludo, not Pluto! And secondly, you can't have a fact list like this and not acknowledge the genius that was Michael Moschen. Michael was actually the one who juggled the glass balls. It was an amazingly difficult task because he had to be hidden behind Bowie and therefore couldn't see the globes, so he was basically juggling blind.
I can't see Michael Jackson in the role of Jareth, where I'm so used to David who did the role phenomenally. Mick Jagger would've been different. Sting definitely could've done it for sure but like Minty says - it would've been more of a dramatic role. One that I think would've been effing phenomenal -- even more so than David - and he HAD the voice to do it -- but he was just getting the diagnosis of his illness - so wouldn't have taken it on for that reason the other being he probably didn't want to act - since he was doing music...but he DEFINITELY could've done it had he been healthy, interested and had the voice, moves, and would've most likely had no problem with the costume(s). Only one other person comes to mind other than David -- and that person is: the late, hypnotic & mesmerizing Freddie Mercury
***Edited to add*** I recently found out that Freddie at one point had been considered for this part - don't remind where I found it out from, but if I find out where I'll post it - I could've totally seen Freddie in this role!

...I had to pause the video to express my amazement at the hidden ‘faces’ fact, I remember spotting the first one but not the others. Always found that kind of wild, this movie has much too it even after several watchings there’s usually something you didn’t see before.
But wonderful collection of facts, I remember reading the anime books when those came out...rather fascinating stories but still an actual movie would’ve been so mind blowingly amazing.

Brian Froud also mentions in the Making Of documentary of Labyrinth that infamous tight pants were intentional, as well as how he describes what influences he used to make the Goblin King. He's part death knight, part Brothers Grimm fairy tale, part rock star, part bad boy. He is supposed to be a teenage girl's fantasy villain, and boy did the amazing David Bowie pull that off flawlessly.

David Bowie and his sensual mild-aggressiveness REALLY did it for me when I was 15. Like Disney princes for some, David Bowie's character was my fantasy. In fact my life partner, has a "look" that is very similar to one of the looks Jareth gives Sarah in the ballroom scene. Of course we had to go to the 20th anniversary Labyrinth ball in LA in 2017.
Goblins are traditionally depicted with long pointy noses. Since Bowie didn't have such a feature, They gave him a long pointy bulge instead :D
I remember those good Ol’ days when us Gen Xer’s loved watching great movies like Legend, Labyrinth, Flight of The Navigator, Weird Science, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, E.T., Space Camp, The Goonies, Dragon Slayer, Willow, and The Never Ending Story! When Molly Ringwald stole our hearts with her roles in Sixteen Candles and Pretty In Pink and Matthew Broderick kept us guessing about Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and his Weekend at Bernie’s! Micheal J. Fox was a dreamboat and we all agreed that Back to the Future was the most EPIC movie to ever grace the silver screen! We all swore nothing could EVER top it! Patrick Swayze set the soundtrack of the summer with his Dirty Dancing and we girls all wanted to be nicknamed “Baby” by our boyfriends! A lot of young women swore on spit handshakes that they would absolutely marry Jon Bon Jovi the lead singers of White Snake, Def Lepard, or Poison. The sirens of our day graced our ears with voices that moved your soul and your body and Gloria Estefan made dang sure that the rhythm was gonna get you! Strong and talented singers like; Debbie Gibson, Tiffany, Pat Benatar, and The Bangles! But nothing, NOTHING could top the voices of Madonna, Cyndi Lauper and Whitney Houston! And although all the parents considered her to be too riské and provocative that didn’t stop all of us girls from using eye brow and eyeliner pencils to draw in that, oh so famous, mole over one side of our upper lip and begging our parents to please let us dye our, (already destroyed from all the Aqua net hairspray and hours of teasing it to the sky), hair bright orange and yellow so we could sing “True Colors” at the top of our little lungs into our hairbrushes and curling irons!
The two Corey’s, (Corey Feldman and Corey Haim), always made us laugh in hits like License to Drive and The Lost Boys and their faces were plastered all over our bedrooms in the posters covering our walls! We latch key kids would come home to after school specials, Saved By The Bell, and Kids Incorporated and when we were done with those we would switch on our Atari’s for hours of Joust, Pong, Centipede, Donkey Kong, or PacMan! On the nights our parents worked super late, we put our aluminum foil TV Dinner trays in the oven and with the 45-55 minutes it took to cook we would lay on our beds and call all our friends because we just knew that so much had already happened in the two to three short hours since we left school! We all needed to know who had a crush on who and did she REALLY “french kiss” him??? Our rooms were treasure troves of our, (what we considered “well spent”), allowances which included walls covered in Tiger Beat and Teen posters and penny candy stashes of our favorites like sour patch kids, Cherry Chanzs , Nerds and our secrets diaries with the little locks on them were safely hidden under our pillows! On the nights our parents didn’t have to work, we stayed out until the street lights came on and then hurriedly pedaled our banana seat bicycles as fast as we could to make it home in time to help our mothers set the table for dinner. We all sat around the table as a family sharing our adventures from the day and when our tummies were full, our Moms would disappear into the kitchen to grab desert, in which we somehow always had enough room in our stuffed full stomachs for! After dinner, Dad would retire to the living room where he would light his pipe or cigar and enjoy the news, followed by Wheel of Fortune and then Jeopardy! On the weekend we gathered in fields to play Wiffle Ball, Red Rover and Freeze Tag. NOT IT!!! Being chose last didn’t mad you sad or mad, it simply encouraged you to do better! Fights were solved by talking it out and if they got super serious, an occasional tackle. We swore that our older sisters and brothers were the smartest people we’d ever met and we strived to be just like them but our younger siblings drove us nuts however we were the ONLY ones who could insult them. The neighbors were all friends with one another and were always happy to look after your house when your family went on vacation and vice versa. Anything on the ice cream truck only cost 25 cents and on hot summer days, we ran through sprinklers drank straight out of garden hoses and made homemade slip-n-slides with tarps, trash bags and dishsoap. Our Dads were always telling us stories from his “good ol days” while teaching us something and Mom was still the most beautiful thing we knew we would ever lay our eyes on!
The local store took checks, carried out your groceries in paper bags and said “Thank you” with a big ol’ smile every single time you came! Those were the days ya’ll! Those were the good ol’ days!

His name is Toby Froud. His father is Brian Froud, who drew the goblin designs. His mother was Wendy- who was hired for the Dark Crystal to make puppets after MAKING YODA. Wendy and Brian met on the Dark Crystal set, through Jim Henson. They fell in love. Made Toby. Toby is now actively involved in keeping the Dark Crystal alive. Give credit where it's due! The people who made this movie and the Dark Crystal are GIANTS of fantasy invention.

Bowie simply excels and is magnetic, blending charm with menace sublimely, as Jareth. Nobody could come close to doing "tra la la" with genuine style.
If Jareth was to be a puppet, I'd hate to see the string. Henson was right, he had to be human. And oh what a human!
80s animatronics was pioneering, especially with thebprimitive state of the technology available. A shame that Hoggle's puppet would end up worse off than the Pinto who got tapped on the back.

Generally speaking I'm not into musicals. I never really thought about Labyrinth as a musical but yeah it's at least 50/50 (if not more) musical. I don't like musicals but I am a Bowie fan more or less. The song As The Word Falls Down is one of the most beautiful things that exists to my mind.

I think you be got the David Bowie being seen all over in the movie wrong , you missed this whole piece actually that everything seen in her room in the beginning is alive in the world where the labyrinth is including jareth and you can see Ludo other characters are stuffed toys about her room ,what that says to me is were almost believing she just fell asleep and is having a dream much like the wizard of oz where everything in her real life is represented by something in oz. Feel me? It's not that he was watching her although it's not a terrible idea either but yeah.

In the original book The Wizard Of Oz she really did go to The Land Of Oz it was not a dream in the book.
I was thinking something a bit similar. My thought was that Sarah's room is essentially a to the whole movie. So, it could be that those photos could actually be sort of a of David Bowie as David Bowie. Think in the terms that maybe Sarah was a David Bowie fan. So then Jareth takes on the image of Bowie as just another example of his building that whole side around her.
What would have been weird (but cool also) is if there was a copy of an album or poster of Bowie's in her room.
According to the novelisation, the figure of Jareth was based on a famous actor or showman her mother was dating. That's the reason for all those scraps from newspapers on her mirror.
@@francescoamadio4311 The thing which confused me in the movie was that her boyfriend was not in the film, but Jareth was. You could easily miss those news clippings (I did). If they somehow worked it in where Bowie had a scene playing the boyfriend, that might have explained it better.
Did you know...Michael Jackson to be the original or prince. Imagine how creepy that would’ve been if Michael Jackson was the goblin King that took your children...Maurice Definitely feel like he had a part in this movie but Jim Henson and they have a boy he really made it what it is so beautiful accidents make beautiful memories. This was certainly a fun movie for me growing up and the sets and puppets were totally fantastic! I also had a little bit of a small screen crush on Jennifer Connelly. She was very beautiful and a very talented actress too! I liked the story a lot too! Thank you for covering this movie.
