Elefsina: A timeless mystery | Ελευσίνα: Ένα διαχρονικό μυστήριο

Μία από τις πέντε πιο σημαντικές ιερές πόλεις της αρχαιότητας, η πόλη των Ελευσίνιων Μυστηρίων και γενέτειρα του Αισχύλου, η Ελευσίνα, χάρη στο φυσικό της λιμάνι και τη στρατηγική της θέση, 21 χλμ. δυτικά της Αθήνας, στο Θριάσιο Πεδίο, το βoρειοδυτικότερο άκρο του Σαρωνικού κόλπου, μετατράπηκε από τον 19ο αιώνα και μετά σε παραγωγική μηχανή της Ελλάδας κι ένα από τα μεγαλύτερα βιομηχανικά της κέντρα. Τα σημάδια της εκβιομηχάνισης κυριαρχούν στο σώμα της πόλης, επικαλύπτοντάς το και δημιουργώντας συχνά την αντίληψη ενός τόπου, που κρατά καλά φυλαγμένο τον πολιτιστικό του πλούτο, ως ένα διαχρονικό μυστήριο.
Η 2023 Eλευσίνα Πολιτιστική Πρωτεύουσα της Ευρώπης επιχειρεί να αποκαλύψει την αθέατη πλευρά της Ελευσίνας, σηματοδοτώντας μια νέα εποχή για την πόλη και τη μετάβασή της σε ένα νέο μοντέλο ανάπτυξης, που θέτει στο επίκεντρο την πολιτιστική της δυναμική.
One of the five most important sacred cities of antiquity, the city of the Elefsinian Mysteries and birthplace of Aeschylus, Elefsina - thanks to its natural port and strategic location, 21 km west of Athens, in the Thriassian Plain, the northwestern edge of the Saronic Gulf - was transformed from the 19th century onwards into the productive engine of Greece and one of its largest industrial centers. The signs of industrialization are prominent on the body of the city, affecting it and often building the perception of a place that keeps its cultural wealth well guarded, like a timeless mystery.
The image of Elefsina as a city that has been hit hard by industry remains dominant in public perception. 2023 Eleusis European Capital of Culture seeks to unveil the invisible side of the city, marking a new era for the city and its transition to a new model of development, focusing on its dynamic cultural assets.
