Same lol I went all out and bought an F1 for my first AR. And no joke on my first range trip I went to an indoor range where they want to inspect the guns you are shooting before you go out onto the range. The guy inspects my rifle, Then I asked to buy a couple boxes of .556 and the guy goes "For this rifle? But it's chambered in .223 Wylde. We don't sell any of that here."
It ended up being kind of cool because I was a total noob at the time but I was given an opportunity to school the guy who I assumed knew more than I did.

I built an AR with a 20” barrel, chambered in .223 Wylde.
I chose this chambering because, when I was reading specs at the time, it was claimed to have accuracy advantages over 5.56 & was capable of using either 5.56 or .223 REM.

The ability to put a round where you intend to put it renders 99.9% of the "what caliber is best" arguments moot in my experience. Putting a round through an eye socket will start a fine case of rigor mortis regardless of caliber...99.9% of the time anyway.

When researching my first AR-15 build, I came across all the varied opinions regarding the 5.56, .223 and .223 Wylde. The best and funniest reason I came across for .223 Wylde was "If the whole world goes to sh*t and you have to steal your ammo off the back of a Humvee, you better be able to shoot 5.56"

Dude.. my DD with a government profile gets 3/4 moa from 1-200 yards with a dogshit trigger and eottech and magnifier (I turn it down so the dot is super small but it's still not ideal for accuracy) out of fiocchi m855 (good ammo but certainly not match.
My point is you don't necessarily need a wylde barrel if accuracy is your thing..
Right now tss has a DD V7 for 1400... that's a damn solid riffle and I'd bet it would get the same accuracy as mine.. with that kind of accuracy I don't see a reason for a wylde.. it's not likely to shoot better than mine for accuracy imo

I remember arguing with a gun store owner regarding the chambering of 223 Wylde barrel. I requested a 223 Wylde barrel as I was building a AR for my father and he ordered a 223 Remington barrel. I told him a 223 Wylde chambering allows me to shoot both 223/5.56 more accurately. He went through the store like an idiot pointing at every AR15 saying they’re all 223 Wylde. I called the dealer that the owner bought the barrel from and asked them if they sent him a 223 Wylde barrel and just didn’t mark it his response was they don’t offer a 223 Wylde. I told him this store owner was about to label his barrel as a 223 Wylde. Even the other sales reps knew I was correct but refused to correct the owner. I went elsewhere and stopped buying anything there after buying like 20 firearms there over the years. I just no longer trusted him and what he would do to make a sell which he didn’t have to with me as I always went there knowing what I wanted. It was sad because I liked the guy and store just was too many red flags over there years and this was the last straw for me. Sometimes people walk into your store prepared and as a owner should recognize the difference with customers familiar with firearms vs newbies. Always do your research was my long winded point.

I saw another AR 15 where the steel cased ammo had a feeding jam. It couldn't be seated with the forward assist and couldn't be extracted with the charging handle. The charging handle had to be hammered back to finally extract the ammo. I won't use steel cased ammo.

My first AR was a build with a friend of mine who knew a whole lot about them, and he recommended the Wylde chambering for that reason, so that I could shoot either one. I understood there was a difference, and I knew the rules for 5.56 versus .223 in other rifles, and my wife had a 5.56. I recognized right off that it really opens up the variety of ammo that I can shoot in terms of what I want to do with it at the time. It took me a while to understand what the actual chambering difference was, and how it functions, but I have had very good accuracy with both .223 and 5.56. And I like it because I can pick which one’s cheaper :-)

My first AR build was with a 20-inch .223 Wylde barrel. It does not seem to be any less accurate than my friends' "store-bought" 5.56s. I liked it so much that my second AR build, a pistol with a 10-inch barrel, was also a .223 Wylde.

The biggest difference is the 5.56 CAN have a longer, heavier bullet whereas the ogive is more forward than a standard .223 round. Because of this difference the bullet of the .556 requires a longer throat to accommodate this. The .223 typically has a shorter throat which means running a .556 in the shorter throat gun can cause the bullet to jam into the lands and drive pressures up even higher. Additionally, the .556 has a slightly narrower shoulder than a .223 for improved feeding in military guns. Not necessarily a big deal but the throat is a big consideration.

I’ve only seen a couple of problems from running 556 in a 223 but only with low quality rifles and even then, only when putting a lot of rounds downrange in a relatively short period of time. And never the catastrophic failure that I’ve heard about, it was simply excessive wear on the chamber. And that might have just been the poor quality of the rifles.

I like that the .223 Wylde chamber can eat both, civilian and NATO ammo, reliably accurately, and safely. No worries about accidentally feeding NATO 5.56 into a .223 Rem chamber, when you have a .223 Wylde chamber. This is also why I use a Criterion M118 chamber on "large frame" AR builds. With the M118 chamber, .308 Win, and 7.62x51 NATO are good to send. Another advantage to both the .223 Wylde, and M118 chambers are if a SHTF situation occurs, it opens up the options for hunting down more ammo, when things get harder to acquire.

Of course they are. It simplifies their process. So much so you will see 556 marked barrels pass a Wylde gauge but fail on a 556 gauge. The down side is the Wylde has more throat errosion than a 556.

@@MatteoThreeEightyFive I would be curious as to why the Wylde chambering would suffer more than the 5.56, it's basically and inbetween in terms of throat lead between a .223 and a 5.56. Why wouldn't standard .223 then suffer even more from the same issue? Or are we talking when only firing 5.56 loads through said chamber? This is genuine curioosity, no sarcasm.

    • @MatteoThreeEightyFive
      @MatteoThreeEightyFive 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@OddBallPerformance For the very reason you mention. Its a hybrid chamber with less leade or free bore than a 556 chamber. And yes a 223 Rem chamber would suffer this even more because it has less than the Wylde chamber. And this occurs whether you are shooting 556 or 223. Although using 556 will exacerbate the issue. But the short of it is when there is less free bore, then at the moment the bullet has jumped into the rifling. Thus slowing down due to friction. The reduced chamber area allows the gases to get to higher pressures and temps because of that delay, resulting in a plasma cutting effect.

I like 556 through a 556. I would not shoot 556 through a 223 but the Wylde is a neat option I might need to try in the future.

My Ar 15 has a 223 Wylde barrel. It works fine for me

When I first started shooting a friend brought out a ar15 varmint platform in 223. We tried to put 556 through it and on the 3rd round it jammed so hard it had to go to the smithy to have the brass removed from the chamber.

gavintoobe points out that measuring techniques yield different results though measuring equivalent loads. It seems he points out that both measure basically the same if the same measuring technique is used. Your thoughts?

Thanks. I am finally clear on this dilemma.
