    I liked the video even before I watched it!! As a Singaporean I know Marion doesn't disappoint 😊 however a very important ingredient for laksa is Vietnamese coriander also called laksa leaves. They are available at asian grocers. Without this you can't have an authentic laksa taste. Just chop them finely and cook them in the soup or garnish at the end (but it's not just a garnish). You'll see this in all coconut broth laksas in Malaysia and Singapore.

    • @appl2597
      @appl2597 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Malaysian Laksa is more like Assam Laksa from Penang. Their Laksa don't use coconut broth... Their 'Laksa with coconut broth' version is actually called Curry Mee in Malaysia.

    • @AO-iv6yr
      @AO-iv6yr 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Appəl I know that but there are also those who use coconut milk. And no, curry mee is not the same as laksa. Curry mee uses the same curry as a regular Malaysian/Singaporean chicken curry, not laksa curry - very very very different!

    • @TheTmullany1
      @TheTmullany1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @@AO-iv6yr That's not really true either though.
      Curry Mee and Curry Laksa are essentially the same thing. Chinese people and people from Penang just tend to call it Curry Mee.
      I think the confusion here is because the video says that Laksa Lemak is also known as Curry Laksa. This isn't true, it's actually it's a variation of Nyonya Laksa which also doesn't tend to have the Curry powder flavour.
      To the previous poster's point. This just isn't true. Assam Laksa (aka Penang Laksa) is just one of the variations of Laksa in Malaysia. There are DOZENS... Laksa Lemak, Nyonya Laksa, Curry Laksa, Curry Mee, Johor Laksa, Kedah Laksa, Sarawak Laksa, Laksa Kahwin, Laksam, Siam Laksa, Ipoh Laksa.... etc. etc. etc. (and we're not even mentioning Singapore and Indonesian variants!)
      The beauty of Laksa is there is NO set rule. Each region has their own (often maddeningly anomalous) recipe. I mean Johor laksa even has bloody spaghetti in it!
      The only constants are a noodles of some sort and a broth made from a paste of shallot, chili and lemongrass (at a minimum).

      A O and also missing the cockle pieces! I love my laksa with a bit of cockles!!!

    • @AO-iv6yr
      @AO-iv6yr 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thomas Mullany curry mee and curry laksa are not the same thing. You can ask any local in Singapore and they know that there's a huge difference even though they look similar. Those who don't know this are swa ku (living under a rock). Curry mee does not have daun kesum and other fancy ingredients like lemongrass. Curry mee is basically chicken curry poured on top of noodles, like curry rice. Laksa curry is not the same as usual Malaysian/Singapore chicken curry. Please get your facts right.

    candle nut is " kemiri " in indonesia it's easy to find here we use that for thickening paste like sambal we use it in garlic sambal or soup with coconut oil " santan " we call it like laksa that also use coconut oil, yes indonesia have laksa it's malay dish in sumatra if i'm not mistake, not claiming we malaysia and indonesia are family so we share culture together food also.
    the topping i suggest use " Melinjo " / gnetum cracker a little bit bitter but wake up u'r taste bud, and a lot garlic chip that made from thin slice garlic deep fried it it sooooo gooooood i guarantee, say hi from u'r indonesian fans Marion u'r video always great love u and keep posting recipe video.
    last one try to enjoy it with garlic sambal, fried garlic 2 clove or one, and mix it with thai chili or we call it " cabe rawit" like small red chili pepper as u'r taste how many u want to put in crush it with mortar with just salt after u crush it with mortar until like paste pour hot fried oil that u already for frying garlic and mix it, i guarantee it will taste good.

    I’ve made this 3 times now, first couple of times were a little less creamy than I’d like when I compare to my all time favourite dealer (Thai Garden Restaurant in Dickson) of this drug. Third time I ended up doing a small batch and using a quarter of the paste to a full 400ml tin of coconut cream and it was absolutely amazing. Hands down better than any laksa I’ve ever bought. I also had made a beautiful silky chicken stock the night before so this might also be adding to the foodgasm I’m having right now. Thanks so much Marion. I have an old Charmaine Solomon book that has laksa lemak but never got around to making it. Watching you do it suddenly made it seem a lot less daunting than I thought it would be. You’re an absolute legend.

    Made it today and it turned out absolutely brilliant!
    I’ve never made laksa before so I was expecting to make some mistakes and have something that tastes good but not exactly laksa.
    I *did* make a few mistakes and couldn’t find galangal anywhere in SL, yet this is is an amazingly forgiving recipe Cos the end result tasted unbelievably just like the ones I’ve had in Malaysia and Singapore.
    Going on my firm favorite recipe list. ♥️♥️

    Nice & georgeous recipes frm u..... usually in MY your laksa similar w sarawak laksa or chinese laksa. But, for southern of malaysia (johorean) we eat laksa soup w spaghetti ( malay ft dutch ), tht one is laksa johor but u need add abit of curry powder. Btw, im really love ur asian recipes especially thai cuisines.

    Your videos are fabulous Marion! Any chance of making a dish that includes konjac noodles for a lower carb option?

    Those in the Toronto, Canada area can find Candle Nuts at Btrust. Just spotted them in aisle 8b of their Mississauga store in the first stretch just before the middle aisle.

    I used to eat at a food court in Cabramatta and had the best Laksa I'd ever had. I found out later that she used evaporated milk as well as coconut cream. Oh, and sliced fish cake. I'll have to try your version :)
