Had new construction with builder grade garbage back in 2015. I ripped out all the molding and installed Windsor One products throughout the entire house. Four years later, we put the house on the market and got two offers the first day for full asking price. The buyers stated the trim work did it for them. Windsor One is the real deal!

Brent Hull designed those moldings for Windsor One. His millwork shop is in Fort Worth and he is an extremely knowledgeable guy. If you really want to learn about moldings and the history and everything I also highly recommend getting involved with the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art (ICAA) they have a very active chapter in Dallas I believe. It will change the way you look at everything!

I was taught doing remodels that the women have the finale say when buying...also, they will never understand what the quality is but they will sure "feel" the quality when they enter the property whether it's paint, floors or trim. We always sold very quickly.

      @3pumpkins170 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Chris Gray, can you please give an example? How do you "feel" the quality when the quality is not there? Is it the paint colors and the furnishings of the home that distract buyer's attention? I just wonder.

i have been a wood worker and have done lots of remodels over the years, and have done house flips. When I started doing this type of work all you could find in stores was trim made out of wood. Now all there is junk. So now I have bought an old shaper that I can get bits made for, and also getting a molding maker to make my own.
It is a shame that all the nice wood products are gone,
So keep up the videos love to see the work you do, nice to see younger getting in to the trades.

Been using Windsor One for 17 years and love it, it’s the closest thing to custom and comes in 16’ lengths which minimizes waste. Mostly I make real custom trim in my shop, but this stuff is closer to trim made 100-200 years ago

Hey Richard. Relatively new subscriber but I’ve been voraciously watching your videos. Such good stuff. The fact that detail-oriented trim carpenters use Windsor One gave me an idea. If I were looking for a good trim carpenter in my area, could be a good idea to find my local Windsor One dealer, give them a call, and ask them if they can provide me name or number of their top Windsor clients. A fast way to get to the better (or best) carpenters in my area. After watching your videos, there’s no way I wouldn’t want perfect trim work.

Carrying that pouch into a house and rolling it out makes you stand apart from the competition.
Carry around a piece of MDF base that you wet on the bottom edge a couple of times and let it swell, show it to the customer and let them know if a toilet overflows, or too liberal washing a tile floor etc that’s what their base can easily look like. Door casing too wicks the water up and looks poor.
Benjamin Moore paints, a major paint company has the best marketing campaign by stating “ it cost less to do it right the first time than to do it over”.
I love how customers have to have fancy cars in the driveway they lease (to cheap to purchase) to impress people (usually nobody they know) but cut corners on the biggest appreciating asset they have.
Richard just keep doing what you’re doing, these videos show your talent!

Crown mouldings should never see a drop of water- why spend extra money on it?? MDF is terrible stuff to work with, but when sealed/ finished properly will serve the same purpose as any other trim material. About leasing vehicles- if money was not a major concern, I'd love to live a life with ZERO car troubles and stress!

Richard, I doubt you'll see this from an old video, but you've made me into a believer. I have found 3 local lumber yards who carry Windsoeone and have done two large jobs with their products. I'm blown away that every piece of their trim is uniform, straight and not cupped or warped. My local yards always carry premium lumber regardless, but this material is another cut above. These products absolutely blow anything from HD, Lowes and Menards out of the water. I've also been talking to a rep from Windsor and he couldn't be more helpful or excited about his products and seeing my work. I'm actually excited about using these products moving forward.

I use a lot of Windsor One products. They are very nice quality. My local lumber yard carries their products. Another brand you might want to check out is Metrie. They also have a lot of nice mouldings. I believe that chunky piece you called a chair rail is typically used as a solid crown. I use those on door headers. I really like Windsor One's plinth blocks. I do a lot of Craftsman style trim and the simple plinth blocks look great with it. I'm really glad you found them out. It'll save you so much time on painting.

I have been following you for a while Richard. It's awesome to watch people who take pride in their work. I just checked your instagram for the first time and see that you have five kids. You are well beyond my skill level for trim carpentry (I'm a DIY warrior), but I can give you some business advice. Charge more. A lot.
You are a small business that does quality work. Pivot to competing on high end work only and get paid. I see the mcmansions you do work in and I'm in awe - those would be multimillion dollar homes where I'm from. If you can sell them on the fact that your work is quality (which it is) and use better products (you are getting there with this line), the sky is the ceiling! At some point in demographics people go from bragging about how little they paid for something to how much they paid for something (or just not caring about the price).
Your work speaks for itself and you are making a brand that stands apart from competitors. Charge a lot more for your work and don't turn back. Wish you well.

Richard, you shouldn’t apologize at all. You’re a craftsman, and craftsmen/craftspeople are all about the tiniest details. That’s what separates the craftsman/craftswoman from the...insert word of choice here. I had no idea that the BB stores were stocking material that was gesso’d. How did you find that out??! As a home owner rehabbing his house, I couldn’t figure out why material cut from the same bundle wouldn’t match up on a miter unless I cut pieces from the exact piece of stock. Perhaps this is why. Nonetheless, you can “geek out” to your hearts content and people like me will be forever grateful that you did! And I’m not even a finish carpenter by trade. Best to you and John!

  • @elcam84

I have seen it used in a few high end houses here but never asked what supplier they were getting it from. (I'm in the same area you are and buy from some of the places you have gone to in your vids).
As for the cost... Well adding 20 cents or more a linear foot is quite a bit of extra cost and unless it's a milliondollar plus home it's unlikely to be used unless the customer pushes for it.
Now for the look. The crisp corners on the trim make a huge difference in how clean the trim looks. Also the quality of the trim makes the install process much easier and also makes it allot easier on the paint guys as well.

I'm a commercial/industrial electrician who's been following Richard now for 5+years, I found him while searching for a trim solution for a friend who needed a finish carpenter and I was trying prove the point that finish work is much harder than it looks and that she needs a REAL finish guy/gal to do the work if the end result is going to be worth a shit! Needless to say, I watch every video now and even though I have ZERO interest in getting into the finish game, I totally appreciate a fellow craftsman who's passionate about what he's doing even though in many cases no one will ever credit the efforts and love that goes into doing it not only the right way but to your own personal standards! cheers to the nerds :)

Alas, the time spent perfecting miters and coping corners is seldom appreciated by many. I love Windsor one and Garden state Millwork because it’s machined well and we always strive for that invisible joint. Geeking out seems normal to me.

Good video! Used to use this brand years ago as my supplier had all the 1x lumber. They didn't stock the profile trim. It definitely was nice and the hid the finger joining pretty well. The primer was more of a paint...it had a slight sheen to it. Got some rubber wood 1x from Lowe's the other month..made in China. The white paint "shell" looked nice.... once I found out where it was made..I was ready to return it. Now I inspect where it's made!

Here in Seattle I’m using 95% Windsor one. It is fantastic!!! A little bit more but way better/ less toxic than MDF.

Unfortunately the nearest windsor one dealer is two hours away from me. Thankfully i found a local mill that used to only sell to contractors willing to sell to home owners recently. Weirdly enough its not that much more expensive than stock trim at the big box stores. Whats really cool is there willing to cut any trim to whatever your measurements needed. What i mean is if you wanted 15 inch base trim they would do it! In fact when i was there they were working on an order for base trim that was just that ,15 inches! Wild! The trim i got was incredibly straight and it was all primed with actual quality primer not the crap big box stores use that is questionable at best.

I called Kurt for a shirt after reading the laser print on the wood. Really great marketing tool. The shirt is gray and says "got wood" on the front with their logo on back. We use the 1x for fascia because it has rot resistance. Great product!

Fun to watch you move up the market. Push it and start looking for another helper or two. Know its hard to make that move with the family but you'll make it. I'm 50 and moving from being a trade to a spec builder finally. You should do that by 40. And you'll put mdf in your first spec.😊

where i live with a 1x4 in pine primed is atleast 40 cents a foot more then mdf. either one also has a slight radius edge, so a bit of extra work to fill when doing wainscoting and stuff like that

I'm one of those who appreciates this type of content and your commitment to actual craftsmanship. I would love to work with that product, but MDF is the going thing. Production at a low cost wins. Though house prices don't reflect that. Price and demand economics I suppose. Keep bringing us great content. PS-Love the glue!

Many of the houses I've worked on, I mean from the 40's and 50's have hand crafted real wood and often require nothing but a new coat of paint. I've been in so many homes that have MDF and they were either swelling of flaking off. You like many here take great pride in your work. It's called craftsmanship and it's a dying art it seems. I am certain once more of us make this product known, those who actually want quality will have no issues paying the minimal extra cost. It's pretty awesome going back onto a job that you did many years ago where you had to mill your own real wood trim and see that it looks just as nice as the day it was installed. Modifying, milling or routing anything MDF is an absolute nightmare. Stay true all of you to your craftsmanship, integrity and pride in your work. We all win out in the end. I'd rather have pride in a masterpiece than money from a junk job. God bless you all!

Hey Richard. So glad to see you pulling away from MDF when possible. Stuff has carcinogens and like you said, poor details. I also stay away from anything in Home Depot or lowes. Basically all designer firewood. As I always mention, I have been a finish carpenter for over 30 yrs in South Jersey.

Heck Yeah I like this stuff!! I had to pause your video to see if there is a dealer near me who sells WindsorOne products and most thankfully a new The Moulding Store recently opened up near me and they sell literally 100s of moulding styles. I am going to take the wife there tomorrow for a Date Day. I will be like a kid in a candy store. Thanks for turning us on to this fun and quality product.

Get a felt-marker and write the category and use info on the back of each piece...I can see confusion as clients pull multiple pieces out and lay them on the table as they decide which style and arrangement they will choose. I'd hate to try to put them all back into their proper pouches. Thanks for this video, it has changed my future completely.

i like the geek out!! at 7:54 you have a wanes cap but i wonder if that can be used as a window ledge piece. probably not, it looks a little tall (where your right hand is). maybe suggest that piece with a smaller top cap so it can be used in window casings. i had a thought, not sure if it was a good one.
