Its funny cause isnt Mario 64 itself a liminal space? you are (almost) all alone, with different entrances to different dimensions, with monsters and weird creatures, and you cant really get out (like, even the castle-garden is a liminal space, theres nothing and you cant actually get out maybe thats why it freaks me out so much lol

It doesn't translate to games imo. The horror films have to be carefully crafted to create that unsettling otherworldly atmosphere. In a game like this you are too much in control and it's just plain corridors, so since old 3d games were just plain corridors anyway, it just seems like the level hasn't been filled up yet.

The backrooms was actually techniclly created from 2008 since the first level was a picture that someone either took or edited in 2008 but it became the backrooms in 2018-2017ish Edit : there is also a whole wiki about the backrooms and that wiki includes every backrooms level which is like 9 million levels if i remember and theres a whole section of outposts, items, entities, levels in there i assure you that you'll like it in there if you like the animations or just simply how the levels/entities look
