It’s really hard to say… it’s very limited in what it’s good at. It’s huge and expensive. I sold mine, not because I didn’t like it, honestly nothing else gives you that look. But it’s 1 trick pony and you need a lot of space
I have both and love them both. Each has its spot. When there is room, I use the 200 only when I need that background compressed for any reason or want a pure subject isolation. The 105 is great everywhere. Being smaller and 105mm, its usuable indoors as well and low light scenarios.
I really appreciate you showing each lens' ability and reasoning for picking one over the other. By chance, have you done a comparison of the 105 wide open and the 200 stepped down (gasp) for tighter headshots? I understand the compression is still there, but the backgrounds would have more detail instead of just being bokeh'd mush.
rustin powell no problem!! I actually didn’t for this review since at that point it’s basically a really expensive and limited 70-200 2.8 , but here is an image from 200f2 @ 2.8 instagram.com/p/Ba-aZgrBqQi/?igshid=1tilokatfyiu6

Pattymac Makes Thank you so much for that!! I’m so glad I could help you! Yes the 105 gets more usage these days. Do you have the 85 1.4g? I still love that lens
@@SNAPAVELI I do still have it! But it hasn't gotten any use in a while. I got the native 35mm with my Z6 and that's really all I've used. It's been great for the sewing and recipe content I make. Hey Baron! Well I’ve never shot to vii but for portraits, I really couldn’t imagine it being worth more money. Vii has better stabilization, but I honestly never shots due to motion blur. Optically the v1 is stellar as well
I love your channel, amazing photos and edits. The fact that you also have experience using gear from all major brands makes your advice solid. I'm a happy d850 owner and I've been thinking of selling it to jump into mirrorless. Do you recommend getting a Z6/7 or switching brands? Greetings from the Dominican Republic!
pedro torres Thank you!! Well honestly if you are heavily invested in nikon I wouldn’t jump ship. I like the Nikon files best out of canon, Nikon , Sony. And the sigma lenses work well adapted unlike on dslr. While we wait on newer Nikon lenses
@@SNAPAVELI thanks for the reply. I ask you this due to the fact that the Z6/7 cameras are very attractive. Selling my d850 to get a Z6 looks tempting.
pedro torres if you truly love the d850 files you may consider the z7, it’s the same sensor. I put over 200k shots on my d850, that and Z7 sensor to me are the best
So J, I know you published this video a year ago, but I have a question for you now. First thanks for the two videos you posted on this subject. Well done. As you know, Nikon has stopped production of the the 200mm f/2 (no z mount replacement or even a fl ed version). Given it's size, weight, and required distance for some portraits, would you buy this lens now (still expensive) or substitute something else. As you know, Nikon (if you are still shooting Nikon) does not have a 135mm or 200mm lens on their road map for Z lenses. I am sure they will eventually appear, would you recommend even thinking about a used 200mm if it can be found these days or wait it out or find an alternative given size/weight? Thanks.
Thanks! Well I have sold mine… it was just too big , the results are amazing, I do miss it. I feel like it’s incredibly limited , it has one look. That look I do miss but not enough to have to have an extra bag with me at all times . I miss it most for kids, family shots. Not so much for my model work since it is the same shot every time. Maybe a 135 1.8 art is an option? I don’t think we will see a new version for years
@@SNAPAVELI Thanks for your feedback. Very helpful. The weight, price, limited flexibility, and fact that the lens is no longer supported by Nikon were concerns even with the beautiful images. Enjoyed your work and thanks for sharing you assessment of the lens. Was most helpful. Stay well.
@@SNAPAVELI UPDATE: I've had a month to shoot with the Nikkor 200mm f2. You're analysis is spot on. I agree, it has one "beautiful as it is" look. I can easily see why this lens would be great for small children (giving them room to be themselves) and for outdoor portraits. Nikon did just announce their 135mm f1.8 on the roadmap. Like you, I don't see a 200mm coming for a long time. Even if they built it with a TC and dropped the weight by 1 1/2 lbs, the price/use case would not be attractive enough. Thanks for your advice. Keep up the great work. Just wanted to give you follow-up and another plug (comment).
you got a new fan, pal! I recently got the 105 1.4 a few weeks ago and ive been torn on whether or not to sideline the 70-200. But your thought process and explanation really put everything into perspective for me. bravo!
New subscriber here. Please I do have a question. I'm a Sony user abd I plan on saving up for the Samyang 135 f1.8. I've heard rumours of apsc sensors cropping in. Now my question is this: Will the 135 give me a look similar to a 200mm. What can be a possible disadvantage of that? Can I use an 85 to get a 105 look as well? PS: The Crop factor is 1.5 for Sony a6400.
Hey!! If you have a full frame Sony right now you can put it in super 35 mode and test it now. It won’t give you the true look of a 200 f2, it will just look like a 135 1.8 cropped in. No more compression than a 135, but the 135 1.8 is very good, if you put enough distance in between subjects and background the 135 looks incredible
@@SNAPAVELI thank you very much for this. However, my question is geared towards using something like the Samyang 85mm or 135mm f1.4 full frame lense on my crop sensor Sony a6400.
@@metasploitstudios2257 definitely! Same conclusion, it just crops in on the frame. So essentially you would just be moving back further to take the same image you would on full frame. You would just be getting a similar field of view as a longer lens but the depth of field wouldn’t be a shallow as full frame. I’ve tried it all trying to achieve the 200 f2 look , really no way to get it without owning one. 135 1.8 on crop will look good though. I’m guessing it would look like a 180mm 2.5 ish
Hey Marcus, I'm curious about your recommendations for all the equipment of outdoors flash shooting. Eg which 48 inch parabolic softbox is this? Do you have a recommendation? I was thinking about an umbrella for simplicity of setting it up. Also because I have profoto lights and their softboxes are too damn expensive. Also any other recommendations for light stand / which godox do you use? Would a B10 do a similar job? Anyway thanks a lot and look forward to your future videos.
Oguzhan Altun Thank you! Well I actually use pretty affordable modifier from Selens ( on amazon ) super soft light. I think the best value for strobes right now is the godox ad600
So psyched! just bought 200 f/2 in mint condition on ebay; can't wait to play with it. I am thinking 200 f/2 on D5 and 105 f/1.4 on D800 combo. I got two arms for a reason!!!
Nikon 200mm f2 has that Zeiss pop effect, you can even shoot at f11 and you'll get that pop! Sigma on the other hand doesn't have that! If I was shooting Nikon, I'd pick that 200mm in a heart beat!
my issue with the 200 f2 whether from canon or nikon is that it is a background killer almost to a fault, while killing your back in the process lol. I use Canon and i have a feeling we will soon seen an RF 105 1.4 to compete with Nikon and Sigma for that focal length. As for myself im waiting for the Zeiss Otus 100mm 1.4 to go down in price so i can compare it with the 85 that i have. By the way i see that you use a 48'' deep dish soft box with the AD600, do you have any issues with the wind blowing over such a large diffuser outdoors ?
Wilhelm Rosenthal Yes! It can sometimes look like a composite with so much compression! Yes I do lol, but I bought the head extension with the ad600 and it’s a life saver! It blows over but the body isn’t on the light stand anymore so nothing breaks!
My 4 go to Nikon lenses for subject isolation are the 180 F2.8... the 105 F1.4... the 85 F1.8 and the 50 F1.4. All 4 of these lenses combined, weigh less than the 200 F2. I can't justify paying over $5000 for that super-heavyweight 200 F2... too much lunacy there.
My gear setup 35mm f1.8, 105mm 1.4 with d850, I found used 200 mm f2 for 3500$.. looking for couple photoshoot , maternity and kids outdoors. would it be good idea to invest on 200mm ? And also with FTZ adapter and F mount lens did you see any issues ? I am looking for a long term perspective
I’m not sure.... I’ve sold mine. It did perform fine, but it’s such a hassle to lug around. The client didn’t see much difference between the 105 and 200 f2. I could but they just want the moments captured, it can be magical, I do miss it sometimes but it seems clients don’t care
hay man great vid! I have a question! What do you think I should buy for my Nikon Z6: 105mm 1.4 Or new 85mm 1.8 S will the adapter make a difference for autofocus or VR of the camera? Thanks for the answer
Thank you! I’m always big on the 105! I think it’s one of the finest lenses I’ve touched. The 85s will probably be a bit more accurate but I’ve honestly shot weddings with the 105 adapted even before the new update and not had issues. But always do only what your budget allows!
Hey! So I’ve sold mine... at times a regret it but it was just too much of a chore to bring it everywhere. Nothing has that look but at the same time 135 1.8 gets close , 105 1.4 framed correctly is way more versatile. I think 200mm f2 is a bit limiting, you only have one angle. I think I have become a better photographer using angles and composition instead of just bokeh all over the place. So I would say not unless you got it at a huge discount
Thanks for sharing. I love both focal lenses. Maybe the 105 will be more useful overall specially if space is limited. For outdoors the 200 is king. By the way I own a Sigma105. F1.4 sometimes is not easy to tell apart from the Nikon 200 F2.
@@SNAPAVELI I'd love to see what you might come up with. After discovering the sharpness of my 85mm f1.4 Nikkor, I have stopped crying my 70-200mm. With my D850, I get so much more sharpness and contrast from the 85 that it blows the zoom away. I wonder if you could get something similar with the 105mm?
@@SNAPAVELI thank you sir... actually I'm looking for more Bokeh effect Lens....So please suggest me best lens .85mm 1.4 or 105mm 1.4 I have already 85mm 1.4 but i need more Bokeh effect......Does the 105mm come with even more Bokeh?
Straight Out of Camera I really appreciate that!! I try to do different stuff than the expected ( not every time but often ) just so I can stay in love with photography. I think I hit a wall at one point just out of boredom
Nice video, I'm in doubt.. Already have a 85mm f1.4 and a 70-200 2.8 thinking of swapping the 70-200 for a 135mm 1.8. Little bit faster and lighter but at the cost of less versatile. 90% of my work is portraits.
That is probably a good swap! The 135 is pretty magical, I’ve since gotten away from the 200 f2. Started to get kind of limited. It does one look and one angle , very well but still it’s too big to just carry for one shot
Of these two lenses I pick a Plena or Samyang 135mm 1.8. They're smaller, costs less, gets the job done, sharpness is perfect wide open. If I had 200mm, I'd propably use it a lot, but with a monopod.
Thanks for this video and your comments below 😃 Most likely you talked me out of buying the used 200 F2 just posted here locally for 1500$ eqv. The G.A.S is running wild even though I have no business owning it as amateur/semienthusiast with no paid work 😄 Even have a 70-200 vr1 that probably gets similar results 😄
No problem! I have since sold mine….. but for 1500$ I’d be quite tempted! Yea paid 3500 used for mine. You just have to know when you want to use it. It became a burden carrying that anchor around when it only works it’s magic in very open areas. But when you find the right area , it can’t be matched…… I still miss it but not enough to buy it again at this point
@@SNAPAVELI Yeah I'm still quite tempted 🤣 Stupid Vahagan over at his Vahagraphy channel of course had to post a 200 f2 review this week as well 😄 Just have to hope it gets sold soon!
Thank you Desi! Well I wish I could give you an honest answer, I sold my 135 to add to my 200 find years ago and with the 105 I didn’t see the need for a 3rd long lens. My buddy has it though and I love his stuff!
Enjoyed this video, I wish the 135 was in the mix. even though I know what it offers in comparison, personally I don't like to be to far away from a model so I have always stuck with an 85, even though I have used a 70/200 f2.8 at 200mm for portraits before, but the 105 is really nice. and I have seen some images that I have loved taken with the Sigma 135 f1.8 art. but the Sigma 105 and 135 are to big and heavy, but I like the size and weight of the new Sigma 85 art. witch is almost half the weight of the new Canon 85L at 1190 grams. I wish I new why it is taking Nikon so long to put out some fast primes for there new mount. the new Nikon 85 f1.8 looks like a great lens, but I am waiting for a new 85 f1.2 or at least f1.4 from Nikon, and hopefully they wont be as heavy as Canons new glass. also a fast 50. right now I am using Sony but when Nikon comes out with there fast primes. and next generation of camera, I might be tempted to go Nikon because I started with a Nikon D80 many years ago. but I have also used Canon after that, I am not really a fanboy of any company, but I do have a soft spot for Nikon because a Nikon was my first DSLR that I learned all the basics with, so Nikons like my home town, this is maybe the 3rd video I have seen of yours. I'm happy I landed on your channel.
Two incredible lenses. Would love to shoot with them. However as an owner of the 70-200mm E-FL, it makes it hard to dive in and spend money on either of them given it's versatility and the exceptional quality it produces. It's like having a bag of Zeiss primes in one package. It shelved my Sigma 85mm Art, it never got touched and I'm pretty sure the same would happen for these two if I got them. However, I wouldn't knock back having a shoot with either of these two though, especially that 200mm.
It's not meant to be a portrait lens at all, it's a sports/wildlife lens so the fact that it can hang with Nikon's purpose built best portrait lens ever really says something.
this is honestly one of the most legit photography channels on TH-cam

@@SNAPAVELI thanks for the reply. I ask you this due to the fact that the Z6/7 cameras are very attractive. Selling my d850 to get a Z6 looks tempting.
pedro torres if you truly love the d850 files you may consider the z7, it’s the same sensor. I put over 200k shots on my d850, that and Z7 sensor to me are the best
Great video. Thanks
No problem!!!
Love your channel, very valuable content
I appreciate you!! Thanks for watching
you got a new fan, pal!
I recently got the 105 1.4 a few weeks ago and ive been torn on whether or not to sideline the 70-200. But your thought process and explanation really put everything into perspective for me.
bravo!
Thank you so much!! Yes all these lenses complicate things. The 105 is really incredible though!
The 200mm was on my shopping list - thanks for saving me from it
😂 it’s sounds great in theory but I think it’s part of the reason I have back problems
@@SNAPAVELI Thank you very very very much. I'll save up for the Samyang 135 then. I really do appreciate a lot.
Wow amazing work
Thank you so much!
So psyched! just bought 200 f/2 in mint condition on ebay; can't wait to play with it. I am thinking 200 f/2 on D5 and 105 f/1.4 on D800 combo. I got two arms for a reason!!!
It’s really an incredible lens! You are gonna get your workout with those big lenses!
@@SNAPAVELI not as big as my 600 f/4
You r the best
عالم المعلومات Thank you so much!!!
Hi, how’s the performance of the adapted nikkor lenses (especially the 200mm) with the z6/z7? Planning to get one but is really undecided yet.
It is pretty good across the board , the 200 f2 can sometimes go to infinity and back though , it’s it’s ok for portrait work
Terrific photos. Many thanks 🙏 👍👍👍
Nikon 200mm f2 has that Zeiss pop effect, you can even shoot at f11 and you'll get that pop! Sigma on the other hand doesn't have that!
If I was shooting Nikon, I'd pick that 200mm in a heart beat!
Excellent video
Thank you so much!!
Great Video ..very interesting
Peter Betts Thank you Peter!
my issue with the 200 f2 whether from canon or nikon is that it is a background killer almost to a fault, while killing your back in the process lol.
Probably Nikon will come up with 105mm 1.2s to compete with Canon
My 4 go to Nikon lenses for subject isolation are the 180 F2.8... the 105 F1.4... the 85 F1.8 and the 50 F1.4. All 4 of these lenses combined, weigh less than the 200 F2. I can't justify paying over $5000 for that super-heavyweight 200 F2... too much lunacy there.
Yea I’ve sold mine. Not because I didn’t love it. It’s just too big for the 1 look that it gives.
I love the 200mm f2 it's my most favorite lens.
What do you think I should buy for my Nikon Z6: 105mm 1.4 Or new 85mm 1.8 S
will the adapter make a difference for autofocus or VR of the camera?
Thanks for the answer
Thank you! I’m always big on the 105! I think it’s one of the finest lenses I’ve touched. The 85s will probably be a bit more accurate but I’ve honestly shot weddings with the 105 adapted even before the new update and not had issues. But always do only what your budget allows!
@@SNAPAVELI thank you sir! Im pretty sure ill go for the 105 now thanks!!
This is also what I want to ask. Thank you
in 2021, do you recommend 200mmf2 lens? i mostly shoot outdoors
@@SNAPAVELI 1300 USD for first version for example? its a god option?
@@orerofotografia for the 200f2 vr1? That’s an incredible deal!
Niceeeeeeeeeeeeee Thats 200mm f2 Thoo!!! sheeeeeeeeeeeeesh
🙏🙏 yes!! It’s really something special, you just have to stay in the gym to use it much!!
@@SNAPAVELI right lol 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾
Great review! Thank you
Thank you so much!!
Thanks for sharing. I love both focal lenses. Maybe the 105 will be more useful overall specially if space is limited. For outdoors the 200 is king.
By the way I own a Sigma105. F1.4 sometimes is not easy to tell apart from the Nikon 200 F2.
I'd love to see what you get with shooting the 105mm and crop to the 200mm perspective. Have you explored that much??
I actually have no tried that! I’m sure that will give you much more reach!!
Hi...Which lens best for Sony Aps-c Camera's Sigma 105mm 1.4 vs 85mm 1.4, 135mm 1.8, 200mm F2
Crop sensor is going to push you very far from your subject with a 105 or 135 , I would try an 85 1.4 on crop
@@SNAPAVELI thank you sir... actually I'm looking for more Bokeh effect Lens....So please suggest me best lens .85mm 1.4 or 105mm 1.4
I have already 85mm 1.4 but i need more Bokeh effect......Does the 105mm come with even more Bokeh?
Very nice!
Straight Out of Camera Thank you!!
@@SNAPAVELI You have good taste. These pics are somewhat different than the ordinary and quite more pleasant to watch.
Straight Out of Camera I really appreciate that!! I try to do different stuff than the expected ( not every time but often ) just so I can stay in love with photography. I think I hit a wall at one point just out of boredom
85mm or 105?
Well I would say 105! One of my all time faves! Only time it gets tricky is if you’d be shooting indoors a lot!
@@SNAPAVELI Thank you! I'm not sure yet. I own the Nikon Z6, but I don't know if I should get the Z85 1.8 or rather the 105 F Mount
Amazing work Marcus! How does the 135 1.8 fit in this scenario? This sold me on the presets...
Thank you Desi! Well I wish I could give you an honest answer, I sold my 135 to add to my 200 find years ago and with the 105 I didn’t see the need for a 3rd long lens. My buddy has it though and I love his stuff!
Shouldn't this be between the 200 and the 135?
I think they are closer in compression than 105.
Okwy Ugonweze Hey! Yes they are closer but I was only using Nikon lenses. The Nikon 135 is so old it just wouldn’t have been able to compete
Why not shoot the 105 at 1.4
Did I not? I can’t remember this video was so long ago
Cool photos.. but I enjoyed the sooc images more than the edits...
105 gets my vote 👍
It’s a great lens!
Sub, hoping for new content.
Thank you!! I’ll be making new videos next week!
The 105mm is plenty find...its not overkill...200mm is good if you need the distance. For people shooting 85mm and 105mm is plenty...
Yes 105 is almost perfect
Two incredible lenses. Would love to shoot with them. However as an owner of the 70-200mm E-FL, it makes it hard to dive in and spend money on either of them given it's versatility and the exceptional quality it produces. It's like having a bag of Zeiss primes in one package. It shelved my Sigma 85mm Art, it never got touched and I'm pretty sure the same would happen for these two if I got them. However, I wouldn't knock back having a shoot with either of these two though, especially that 200mm.
Rob Fischer Yes a great zoom makes like so easy!! I wish I owned that one!
It's not meant to be a portrait lens at all, it's a sports/wildlife lens so the fact that it can hang with Nikon's purpose built best portrait lens ever really says something.
Yes , definitely has grown into a legendary portrait lens over time.
We also want some raw photos
Now if you put the 135mm in the mix………. You most likely would leave the 200 at home
I really would love to own a nice 135 1.8
The 200 is perfect.
The 200mm is a legend the 105 is growing into one.
I agree!!!
You don't keep 200 f/2 of your second body. You keep your 2nd body on 200 f/2.
Lol correct!!
