  • Setting up a wildlife water station is a simple way to help wildlife who are being severely impacted by bushfires, heat waves and drought throughout Australia. Building one is easy, fun and could potentially save lives.
    Water for Wildlife is an initiative of Do Something and Animals Australia.

    I love the idea but I am surprised about the use of 100mm Storm Pipe.
    90mm Storm Pipe is vastly cheaper and more available in all towns.
    This is a sealed system so no air can enter the joins or it will just slowly drip out.
    The use of the “U Bend” in one ( I bet they aren’t cheap) is better replaced with 2 x 90 degree fitting $1.15 at bunnings with a section of pipe to join it would allow you extend the drinking bowl away from the post or tree. ..
    As for filling as it’s shown you would need to invert it to fill etc. The video was lacking in many real implementation details, more like a concept.
    Just like not using a pvc pipe cleaner first. For non pressure situations you do not require it in theory but heh just a tiny air leak is a trouble you don’t wan’t to come back to an installation for a silly leak. The cleaner and glue are cheap so clean then seal with vigor. !!! Use the red cleaner and blue glue to show both have been used! why do this.. If all the water is gone and the feeder is properly sealed .. There are lots of thirsty animals!!!
    A method to avoid inversion is to use screw cap end fitting on each end (Use vaseline rubbed on the rubber seals in the end caps to improve the airlock...
    What I don’t know is the screw cap with rubber seal air tight enough. Having never tried it.
    Definitely 90mm for these as the cost on 100mm is way more. You would screw a “temporary” cap on the bottom outlet and then unscrew the top refill it and remove the temporary lower cap.

      Tried it with some threaded couplers and screw caps and it worked great. People have mentioned that the air needs a relief valve for the correct water level to be maintained ? Any thoughts?

      @@iAVs-Sandponics Doesn't need a valve. The water level will remain at the level of the top of the inside of the "U" pipe. Anything above that is held in by vacuum.

    Seems like there's not much consensus about whether people should give wildlife food/water. Maybe it can cause dependence on humans if it's done too much, but this heat wave is an extreme circumstance.

    What if the water in it gets dirty..how can I dislodge the bottom piece, empty and clean?

      Hold the long tube parallel to the ground and then rotate to empty.

    Wouldn’t that overflow? I’m planning to do this for my dogs.

      Vacuum holds the water in. It's important to seal the top cap well. You can just fill it with a hose instead of a watering can if you position the pipe the same way. To empty, hold pipe horizontally and rotate. This thing is genius.

    Do you have to unstrap it to refill?

    • @elsanyman2067
      @elsanyman2067 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could drill a whole high up on its side and then refill water trough that, but then I guess you need some type of driller to do it

      Unless you injected it, yes! As soon as air is able to enter above the u-pipe, gravity would level the water at the top of the u-pipe no matter how much water you put in or how fast.

    • @habeuscorpuscle
      @habeuscorpuscle 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@elsanyman2067 This won't work. The water is held in the upright tube by vacuum. If you poke a hole in the upright, it will drain.
