Then why do so many people die not seeing their promise...like the Israelites dying before they got to see the promised land? I don't think he shows up for everyone. He makes promises but then doesn't have to fulfil them all.

A good question. God’s promises are contingent on our obedience to His word. The Israelites reacted out of fear and not faith. Even though God had promised them the land they refused to go in and take it. God still honored His word, but the land was taken by their children who did not doubt.
