The saddest thing is, if they didn’t have a mental illness when they were admitted, they did after

How horrendous this lady’s story is. Unfortunately, a story that thousands of women, now pensioners could tell. I once cared for a lady in a supported living home. She told me her Mother put her into an institution after becoming pregnant at the age of 15. She never saw any of her family again. Now at the age of 65, she has spent all of her adult life in care. There are no words to describe the complete injustice.

I know it was a long time ago, but so sad to think that she was committed simply because she had a child out of wedlock. Just goes to show how much society's changed x

Churchill wanted single Mothers sent away and children born with disabilities destroyed so that they were not a burden or a drain on society. Only room for the strong and the weak and feeble minded put away and forgotten

I trained at Stanley Royd Hospital in 1969/1971. There were so many old ladies who were institutionalised because they had babies as young girls. It was so cruel

.. this expression of human life is so sad.
Lucy was robbed of her life .. and her chance to feel motherhood.
    So sad.
Would anyone who knew her, .. family .. friends,..... feel able to express their memories of Lucy please ?
Or indeed, would anyone feel able to recall .. the life and experiences of others who too were incarcerated.
I feel, .. absolute aching heart ...... and so soon ago in history.
I feel that each of these persons should be accounted for .. respected in some sort of plaque at the very least.
Or a remembrance garden, which highlights and gives some indication that many lives were ruined and taken without justice.
Stating that times have changed does nothing to honour those who must've suffered immeasurably.
Although a peace garden sadly cannot help them now, at least it might serve as a mark of respect and a symbol that people were wronged.
Culturally we learn and adapt and change, but to do so we are standing on the ..... immeasurable suffering and .. day after day after day of incarcerated .. what must've been incomprehensible suffering .. and the way patients must have tried to cope mentally feels impossible to grasp.
I wish we could name every one who was detained here ......
and give each of them a place in our hearts.

They should be shunned. Look at the mental retarded asylums back then....filled with unwanted or "slow" and retarded children, most of which, were born out of wedlock. Watch those videos. Sadly, it still goes on, today.

I wish there could have been a follow up to this film. I find myself watching it over and over again wondering whatever happened to these women. One thing I suppose that we know for sure is that they are all dead.

I used to work in a hospital like that, in the 80s, people were put into group homes when the institutions were closed.

Nobody’s life is wasted unless the person decides to waste it. It may seem to be a waste to others, but God had a purpose for her. Lucy’s children needed to be born, and Lucy fulfilled a need whether she knew it or not. Her work and ability to be among the mentally challenged did help others known to God. That Lucy survived to old age is a credit to her tenacity and a lesson for others.
