Epiphone Century 1966 - one great guitar...

  • Epiphone have been going since 1873, and making quality stringed instruments. This one is no exception: the "Century" model is a re-issiue of the classic 1960s design. It lives on into the modern age with a no-nonsense approach to guitar.
    Hear it here without the frills of stomp boxes or any effected noises...

    Love it when you just grab a piece of kit and chat about it. Some of my fave Dan Baker videos. 👍

    From Leo: Great demonstration! You were wise to avoid the effect pedal trap. You are right, it is an amazing guitar that fills the gap between more common guitars.

    I, yesterday, bought the last "1966 Century" in any store here on my long-ago adopted wet Antipodean rock. You know, Aotearoa. Ha, don't even know where it is do ya! (It's terrible here, don't come, send beer) Same finish as in Dan's Review. Cherry is prettier, but they so often Burst. Oh my. Rockshop here has a monopoly on EPI, et al., and this is the last of 5 shipped to NZ. Yet it's a 2017 model. Ugly ducking? Tall Poppie? In this case Kiwis have crappy taste. I thank them.
    So Happy New Year from New Zealand. The clock struck 2022 about 4hrs ago. Maybe a bitta beer too.
    Jamming my brand spankin EPI hollow body all of the day and all of the knight. Ain't never even played a hollow jazzer. Or any jazzer. I feel so ....hep. Like a cat. A really hep cat. Diggin? Plug it in, plug it out. Chorus, Verb, bitta echo. Dirt. More dirt. More dirt. FEEDBACK PAIN. Less dirt. Wow, that was fast and INTENSE! But I achieved my feedback goal.
    Regardless of effects used, or not, this guitar is best turned up to just to match the speakers to the timbers. To hear the Epi and the amp double chime just imperfectly together.
    Shaken and stirred.
    It's curious that these effing holes deliver their song with aplomb but only going out to the 'audience'. The tone for the player is a bit diminished. Small and tinny. But not to the audience. To the audience it jangles like Django. Just play this gat on a bed and point the sound board a bit more to your face and this is immediately clear. But the player's ear tone grows on me and makes one keep more precise with my hands. Gives back a touch of mud tones to the player's ear when ya get sloppy.
    I am a cheap guitar horder and modder. I love cheap used gats. But this is my 50th birthday present. $1230 of my Kiwi dollars (less Boxing Day sale...but still about 42000 Philippines Pesos)
    BUT: WORST FRET ENDS EVER. THEY NIBBLE AT CHA!
    'Like OMG Becky, mine has the worst fret ends EVER!'
    Worse than every guitar I've ever had. Shockingly bad. Laughably bad. I could velcro the guitar to the wall with these fret ends and a bitta figurin. Totally fixable in a short afternoon. But after a day playin, my index finger's base is a bit red and sore. Really, the most expensive guitar I have ever owned has fret ends worse than any $100 generic Chinese neck that's been in may hands.
    That's the bad. The good: ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING ELSE.
    It has been my best ever, and first ever, alone at New Years with the dog while the wife and child are doing beach and nippers with inlaws that don't like time with dogs. Worse than expensive jagged fret ends those inlaws. Ha. Jokes. Mostly. Dog people really are better than non-dog people. Zia agrees.
    The dog thinks I'm buddah. I let this happen. It's good to be appreciated. And to play the best guitar I have ever owned. Wreckless frets and all. Game changer. I might eventually become a pro intermediate player and global sensation with this guitar and my nearly 50 years of good looks.
    Buy this guitar if you have big, aging and often sore hands. Find a used one? Because this is Epi's only offering in a Semi or Hollowbody that has a fuller 'rounded C" neck profile. But it isn't in the Epi catalog in 2021ish22ish.
    Now I might have to sell a gat or two. I didn't know one could sell a used guitar. Seems cruel. Don't guitars deserve to have a stable home? It's gonna get harder when the boss returns. Yes dear!

    It would be cool to add a Dearmond Rhythm Chief 1000 in the bridge position, for more rockin' riffin'

    Hi Dan, this great demo convinced me to buy an Epi Century (and sub to the channel) I love it but it came strung with 10’s and unwound 4th. What gauge and brand of strings do you use on it? Cheers

    Any reason why there’s not one made with two p90s? I would think they would be very popular

    Would you
    Upgrade the wood saddle with a tuno-matic? Upgrade pot, switches and a bone but?
    How’s the actual pickup?

    • @DanBakerMusic
      @DanBakerMusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I may do something in the future, but the guitar works well at the moment. The wooden bridge is nice for me as it does give a slightly muted darker tone..

      @danielemilazzo432 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dan Baker thanks. I haven’t been alle to see one yet, does it feel cheap?

    • @DanBakerMusic
      @DanBakerMusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To me it seems ok with the wooden saddle - it's durable looking hardwood, and the tuning is stable. I'd probably keep it, as I like the darker tone through that P90!

      Harry Dial It’s more about the guitar really - someone else commented on my telecaster saying don’t play through so many amps!

    • @bubbatheking9225
      @bubbatheking9225 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@DanBakerMusic I apologize for my initial comment as I look back and realize it was rude. I applaud you and anyone else here with the backbone to put these vids out. Now, I don't disagree with you as a guitarist, it is about the guitar, but electric guitars aren't going to reach a larger audience without amplifiers. And I will take a simple amp like a Deluxe, and just by changing speakers, the personality of a guitar changes. Fingernail vs fingertip, Rocket 25 vs JBL 100, on and on the story goes. The bottom line to me really is, and I knew this when I commented, I need to go play one for myself. I also believe firmly that whatever style or genre we play, how does the instrument fit? Now Dan, I hope you keep making vids, I'll be here to root for you in the future. I can't wait to be able to actually go to a music store again and 'hang' whilst I try new stuff out. Harry Dial
