Did you know the last ancient Pagan sanctuary in the Europe was destroyed in 1923 in Minsk, Belarus by the Soviet authorities. They shooted the Priest, burned his house, cut the Sacred Oak and brought the Altar Stone to museum.
Cimbri and Tuetones 😬Orosius writes: “As though performing a curse or a sacrifice they utterly destroyed everything they had captured. They tore the Roman clothing into pieces and had it strewn about the landscape. The captured gold and silver were cast into the river. The Roman breastplates were hacked to pieces and horse trappings were deliberately destroyed. The horses they seized were drowned in whirlpools and the captured soldiers had nooses fastened around their neck before being strung up to die on trees. Thus the conqueror received no booty while the conquered obtained no mercy. (Orosius, Against the Pagans, 5.16).
I have seen references to this practice of hanging animals in trees to Woden still being done in 1930s Germany as well. I will try and find the actual citation and post it here soon
About 1972 I came across a number of dead foxes hanging in a forest glade near Fordwich, Kent. I was told this was a "gamekeeper's gibbet" intended to discourage vermin. I wonder if it had a deeper origin. It obviously didn't do much to keep foxes away, anyhow - there must have been a score of rotting corpses. I will never forget the stench.
imagine the smell og tens of full grown men hung in those holy trees back in the day. . and women crawling under them in the hopes of aiding their fertility.
My grandparents in Appalachia also hang up animals from trees. Namely ones they wish to ward off and keep away from their garden or chickens. I wonder if they are related somehow?
Growing up in southern Missouri on our family farm.. in the 1980s, I remember seeing many old world rituals and traditions my family continued as well.. I am mostly Germanic of origin.. there were always Nithing poles around for one..
Hanging animals in the trees tells the predators in the area that there is an even bigger predator near by. My friend who had a sheep farm would hang dead coyotes in the trees to encourage the remaining coyotes to leave. He swore by this technique.
It'd be hard to see this topic in a lighthearted way, i think the lost vhs mystical format is a vibe, and your narrating is top notch, as always. Plenty of bitching in here, but i like it.
In the rural US, cattle raisers hang the carcasses of coyotes they kill on the fence lines as a “warning” to other coyotes. I’ve always wondered if this custom has deeper roots.
I love seeing that style, like the Fenrir one. That true feeling of danger that comes with Ragnarok, rather than some overly discussed Cryptid in the US. Great format
Dipping a bit into Analog Horror, Tom? Can't say I dislike it! Very interesting video, would love to see more Pagan/Heathen information presented in this fashion, since it fits well with the subject matter.
I'm Mexican American and had the very fortunate opportunity to study abroad in 2016. I chose Växjö, Sweden (formerly part of the Värend hundred or "small land") and it was the most serene and inspiring time of my life. I recommend going to Växjö if you havent been, a very nice area. Coincidentally, it is also one of two potential sites for the mythical battle of Bråvalla. Only later did I learn about all the history behind this region of Sweden. Loved the style of this video, cheers and good jul.
Apparently similar rituals were also practiced until the 1950s by farmers in parts of northern Germany who would hang some of the entrails of slaughtered animals on the branches of trees, especially oaks. This type of offering was called "de Wood" in the local dialect, so it's likely that there was a connection to Wodan/Odin. The German Wikipedia page on Odin has a link to an article describing the practice.
Interesting parallel with Jesus on the cross. Especially the detail of being pierced in the side with a spear. I wonder if these similarities made the Anglo-Saxons more open to Christianity.
@@jayasuryangoral-maanyan3901Or it was added to the New testament in order to correlate better with existing folklore. Gungnir is the name of Odin's spear, and although I don't know how old that is, it appears on relics going way back to before the conversion of Scandinavia.
It might be worth looking into the Delphi case in Indiana, USA. It has recently been suggested that the murder of two girls a few years back was related to a blood sacrifice in worship of Odin, and the evidence is starting to pile up. Other murders in the area may also be linked. There's a surprisingly large community of Odinists in that area, including within law enforcement and the corrections department. Not coincidentally, evidence pointing to Odin worshippers as the guilty group has been ignored. Instead, a man with no ties to Odinism, and who seems to be completely innocent of the murders, is being held in prison before his trial--not jail, like any other pretrial suspect--and hounded almost to the point of death by prison guards wearing Odin patches and tattoos. When that man's lawyers pointed out all the flaws in the case and put forth the idea that their client was actually innocent, the judge removed them from the case--even after they offered to defend the man for free, because they believe so strongly in his innocence. The supreme court of Indiana had to step in to get them reinstated, and the saga continues. I'm a Christian. If I were to learn that there's a breakaway sect of Christians performing human sacrifices in the name of my God, and pinning the guilt on what appears to be an innocent man, I'd be deeply concerned. Since this channel seems to have a Paganist slant, I thought you might likewise be concerned about your beliefs being twisted in this direction.
Though I never heard of animal sacrifices to Oden today it's still common here in Sweden to hang up a sheaf for the birds around Christmas and it's common knowledge that it is a sacrifice to Oden.
I used to wrap dead barn cats in burlap cocoons and put them up in an old Apple tree Had quite a few up there Hired a new girl once and she asked about it and was told that’s the Dead Cat tree She thought it quite peculiar
I LOVE the VHS aesthetic (and the Texas Chainsaw Massacre nod), although, to be honest, the frequent glitches were a little distracting, and the computerized voice was rather obnoxious, so less is more in my view. Other than that, I love the content and aesthetic. Good Yule!
I found animal bones on trunks or rocks when I go in the woods but it's only the skulls so probably just someone who did it for no reason, as I do too just for fun "if someone will pass here", like an ancestral instinct.
I know the Christmas Tree is a distinct Christian tradition, but I can't help but see the parallels of hanging corpses on a tree as an offering to Odin, and hanging ornaments on a Christmas tree. I wonder if there was some inspiration there.

You ever heard of a period during which Earth was in a polar configuration with Saturn as hypothesized by Velikovsky, Talbott etc? A good documentary talking about this is Symbols of An Alien Sky from Thunderboltsproject. If you've heard of it, have you ever considered that the electrical plasma discharges created by the planets being so close is the source of all those ancient "storm" or other "lightning" gods? Once upon a time, planets were the gods. Before we came up with other imaginary gods, it was the planets.

Im in Virginia, we do the same, particularly with crows. Normal explanation is that crows are "smart" enough to avoid their dead former companion.
The vast majority of settlers to the Appalachians were English followed by Scottish they would have brought their customs with them like clogging.

These rituals and customs never really died down. Though Christian nations, some rituals and customs are still of pagan origin.
This was really well done. Haunting mood.
Analog Horror is such an oversaturated genre filled with chaff that StJ managed to contribute one of the best works in it without even trying.
