i literally have a signboard in my cab that reads 'SORRY OCCUPIED" which i put on the dash when i have someone on board. The LEVC hire light is one of the most fundamental design flaws i've ever seen, to think of all the research and development that went into a 70k vehicle and they didn't even notice that would be an issue.

You're absolutely right about the taxi light on the new cabs. It doesn't only mean people like me try and flag you down thinking you're free when you're not, it also means that sometimes I don't even bother trying to flag the new style cabs down because it's such a lottery. It needs to be fixed for everyone's sake.

Really liking hearing the cabbie perspective. I live in London and don't want to have the bother of driving (finding parking, petrol stations etc) so am very very happy to be able to hail a taxi on the street. The height of civility.
And yes, the light looking on in daytime is very frustrating for everyone concerned.

Presumably the whole "Do you mind waiting?" thing is fine, because the meter is still running all the time you're waiting, isn't it? Also, it's so awesome you accepted that fare to Twickenham. I used to have terrible trouble going by black cab from central/east central london to Chiswick around 11pm/midnight in the past.

    • @EwanMarshall
      @EwanMarshall ปีที่แล้ว +7

Yes and no. The TFL meter rates runs slower on time than miles driven, so actually driving is better also there is the £3.80 charge the moment the meter starts, so a new passenger is better rather than a continuing journey. That said, it is a service job and keeping the customer happy is good for the industry as a whole and you might get a tip. Also it might take a while to find a job anyway.

I caught a taxi for the first time in ages today as it is recordbreakingly hot, just for a short run up to King's Cross, but the LEVC lights made it so hard to tell if they were for hire or not I just waited til I spotted a TX4 that definitely had the light on. I either do that or aim for ranks, it's just easier than the mild british embarrassment of hailing a taxi with people already on board 🤣 and as if by magic, here's a Tom the Taxi video about working hot days and the first thing that comes up is the LEVC light design!

Greetings Tom and I just want to say how much I mostly enjoy your videos. I'm a private hire chauffeur and am presently driving a new S500 Merc. I empathise greatly with many of our mutual problems. Good to know that entering Grosvenor Place from Hyde Park Corner reopened yesterday, although why South Carriage Drive is still closed is quite simply beyond me. How about doing a video of the significant advantages that cabbies have over private hire? I have suffered greatly trying to find somewhere to stop for just 5 minutes, let alone 60!! It's mostly just trying to go to the loo. Even stopping for 5 minutes on Shepherd Street to go into Piccolo can be a risk.
One new problem is that the car I drive has various anti-collision software. Some of it can be disabled when starting the vehicle (if I remember), but some can't. If anything on two wheels whizzes past me and is too fast and too close, it can (and has) set off the anti-collision system. The car will brake sharply, often causing passengers and myself to lurch forward. Sometimes, my seatbelt will jerk sharply around me, stopping me from lurching forward but scaring the bejeepers out of me. As you can imagine, this is far from a good scenario and it is a problem that nobody at TFL seems to be aware of. It wouldn't happen if those people on two wheels drove or cycled sensibly, but that's another whole new debate.
Just recently, when I was doing about 2 m.p.h. slowing down at lights, a cyclist was too close and too fast immediately behind me. That set off the anti-collision system, the brakes kicked in and the car immediately stopped. The cyclist hit the rear of the car. Naturally, it was my fault (typical cyclist's lack of common sense) and the cyclist began to have a go at me. Naturally, I told him why the brakes had automatically did what they did and I could see that the cyclist didn't have much of a clue what I was on about.
Mercedes themselves seem to be unaware of this problem. Sooner or later, somebody is going to get killed because of it.
Anyway, keep up the great videos. Thank you.

As for South Carriage Drive, I heard that Royal Parks want it open but deem it to dangerous to open QE gates while TFL have a cycle lane running past them on Park Lane. They’re in talks apparently. North Carriage Drive I hear we’re never getting back.

I love your videos but I would just say that the Low Traffic Neighbourhoods and cycle lanes are really a lifesaver for people like myself who are wanting to cycle more to get around London. Not saying all of them are perfect but a lot of the people who are against LTNs (and cycle lanes/lane narrowing etc) have not been on a bikes since their childhood! I would love to work with such people to make the road design even better for both of us but it often feels like antibike/anti-LTN people still accept that cyclists have a right to use the road safely too.

even though i spend hours a week sitting on these streets i still enjoy these videos so much. my thoughts when i see a new road layout I try and think that if TFL/councils are trying to cause more congestion and pollution they’re doing a fantastic job and it all makes sense

TFL and the London councils are very good at causing "Khanage" in fact they are experts at it. They make a previous 5 minute journey into a 30 minute journey for their delight.

Hi Tom, entertaining video as always. I find your views on London's road closures ill-informed though. It is important to understand the concept of induced demand and how it applies to roads in London. There are many ways to get around in London and people will choose their mode according to their sensitivity to various factors including cost, comfort and practicality. If we increase road capacity, inevitably more people will choose to drive. Driving is the most comfortable way to get around and the only reason more people don't drive is because of all the traffic they will run into as well as the other deterrents (e.g. congestion charge) that we have. Most of those people we see cycling *could* afford to drive, they chose to cycle because it has become more convenient and efficient thanks to a reduction in road capacity. Reopening closed roads as you propose will simply increase car trips and land us back in the same levels of congestion, only with more vehicles on the road than we have now. The more space we give to cars, the more cars we will have.
There is certainly a place for taxis on London's roads, but increasing road capacity won't help you get anywhere quicker (in the long run), unless it is restricted to bus lanes of course.
This video explains the concept of induced demand better than I can: th-cam.com/video/Ds-v2-qyCc8/w-d-xo.html

I get that it's balancing the needs of many types of transport, but there's always going to be a critical mass. I.e. An amount of traffic passing through London, no matter how good the public transport or cycling infrastructure is. Taxis, PH drivers, Lorries, delivery vans, emergency services etc.
Currently it costs £15.00 a day to drive in central London (congestion charge) and a further £12.50 if you don't meet the emission standards, most diesel vehicles (ULEZ). Surely this alone is a big enough deterrent.
I no longer have "options" driving the taxi any more. If one road was closed, no problem, there should be an adequate diversion. It's not ideal but it ensures traffic is flowing, pollution doesn't accumulate in one area, pedestrians aren't at risk of crossing at an uncompromised junction where the traffic has burst every.
Sadly in London, there is just one way to drive. People often ask "can't you take a shortcut" but there is nothing now, other than sit and bear with it.
Reducing Park Lane from 40mph to 20mph? 3 lanes down to one?
Tottenham court road, it used to be 3 lanes, 1 way northbound, getting you out of London, thus removing congestion from central London, but now it is restricted 08:00 - 19:00 Mon-Sat and only one lane..... it's akin to restricting access to the M25
