This video is a gem I’ve watched it so many times, it’s so great to hear how unique each amp sounds, all seem to have a gritty driven tone that’s close to a fuzz, I haven’t heard a fuzz pedal come close to replicating it tho so cool, the Harvard is my fave!

Forget the amps, who is that guitar player???? I absolutely hate amp demos done by crappy guitar players cause you dont get the real vibe, but this guy has it together to match the amps awesome tone! I dig the Hendrix pull for the very first sound sample!

The little '56 Princeton in the picture on the left actually taught me good right hand technique. It was my first encounter with real touch sensitivity and output tube dynamics. If you play hard, you get what Billy Gibbons calls "4 flat tires on a muddy road", and then when you start to learn about the attack of the right hand, these amps begin to reveal their full dynamic range. they have everything from clean to mean to scream, If you know how, you can make them sound any way you want.

The fucking Champ at the end was totally bathing in juicy goodness. It sounded disgustingly good and just oozed so much character and color. They all did really. The distinct fender sound was present on all of them. But daamn man. That little amp was killing it! And the player was killin too. Very tasty and smooth playing and execution. Very good demonstration of the color of these amps. Nice variety.

WOW, what a collection and a great video too! I recently traded $100 worth of RC airplane parts for a 1956 Fender 5E3 Tweed deluxe. I found it had a blown output transformer, blown Jensen speaker and all 5 tubes had open filaments plus wires had been snipped. I purchased a Hammond transformer, rewired the amp, I had the tubes in my stock and I took the speaker apart and rewound the voice coil. To my pleasant surprise the amp now works and sounds great! Cosmetically its a good 8 plus. What luck!

TheRudydog1 slip 150ma to hot lead will save ypur life if speaker blows or tube shorts. Hammond 1620 sounds great . I have them in my 5e3 clones

I'll jump in here in case anyone is interested where this was recorded. I agree with your point about a room mic point 100%. I LOVE nothing more than a good room sound for just about everything. However, we were not working in what you'd call a great "live room environment". We recorded this in my old office that has a drop ceiling so a close mic was our best option. That being said, we hope it's a fun video that sheds a little light on some of the different tweed varietals.

Thank you for referencing these amps! I used this video to see how close the Lovepedal High Power Tweed Twin pedal gets to the actual tweed tones. I gotta say they did a great job! After hearing your demo I've case to our base said pedal. It has a little more tweed tone than the Wampler '57. I will be getting the Les Lius soon to round off my tweed era sounds.the Stevie mod is another one I'll be getting to fully capture the 50's as well as the 60's sounds! Thanx for the demo! Great chops as well!

So I still believe every Strat, Tele or P90 Gibson sounds much better with these amps.

Humbuckers sound terrific plugged into a tweed's Lo input with its 68K grid resistor. Wimpy single coils like the Hi input. It's almost as if Leo put the Lo inputs in there because he knew a better pickup was right around the corner 😘

  • @MrDeaweber

Thank you, Seriously, Thank You to everyone from the player to the production and the proud amp owner to the payer of the bills = thank you for a very well put together video showcasing what, after a 25 year long journey I've come to realize = tweeds produce the finest overdrive there is! I also went on a grueling five year journey searching for the fuzz tone in my head. I found my fuzz pedal and yes It sounds like a melting down tweed magically controlled in just the right places by just the right amount to be versatile and incredible sounding lol. Now I know where the core fuzz tone I had in mind came from. I'm blown away and Marshall's may well have their place but they're never going to sound the same to me. It's as if everything after that sound was a shadow of those kings our player coaxed into speaking to the people. Couldn't have been better played for showing off those amps IMHO. Sorry for all the fanfare I'm putting in my comment but this is literally the biggest and most exciting discovery I've made when it comes to tone.

why only the 6V6 amps? I'd REALLY like to hear a comparison of the 5881s: The Super, the Pro, The Bandmaster and especially the Bassman. Also the Twin I suppose. This was a GREAT video. But there needs to be a second half, or part II where you compare the big boys. I have owned pretty much every model of Fender tweeds. I think I liked the Super the best because it was like a baseman but much lighter and thus much more portable. And still, you would be amazed at how loud that amp could go. I just sold a dead mint tweed Deluxe (JJ/1960, November) and the buyer was out of his mind with joy. I now have one tweed left, a mint '59 baseman which I hope never to sell. It is amazing, but kind of too loud if you want the natural overdrive tone. Another reason I liked the Super. If I am not mistaken, the Pro, Bandmaster and Super all used IDENTICAL circuits in every way. only the Pro had one 15" speaker, the bandmaster had three 10" speakers and the Super had two 10" speakers. The Bandmaster is one of the only Fender tweeds I never owned. Just because I had the baseman and a super and a Pro. So I felt spending the amount of cash that would get me a bassmanor half that amount to buy a pro or super made the bandmaster redundant. At that point I felt like a Bandmaster became more along the lines of designer jeans. Same tone and volume as a Super for half the amount. If you can afford it, find an original Super that uses 5881s. Nothing can top that amp. A Bassman is identical in tone, just heavier and louder. That is my opinion.
I live in a condo, so it's hard for me to make videos at high volumes, but search my videos. I know there are a couple out there somewhere. Some day I'll buy another Super. Even if it's a Victoria. I owned a Victoria high powered Twin and if memory serves, it didn't come close. It broke up almost instantly and did not come close on the volume. Everyone has tried but sorry, but Victoria's version didn't cut it. I'd like to try their double deluxe
This post, remember, is nothing more than opinion.

Leo got it so right, and yet he probably never anticipated that one day his amps would be as loved as they are. The other cool thing is that even if the collectors get ALL of them and lock them away in the vaults forever, us reg'lar folks can keep right on duplicating them until hell freezes over because they is so damn simple in design. As long as we got schematics and suppliers for parts, anybody who knows what the're doing can make kick-ass copies of these things, all they gotta do is be sure and use first rate components and really sweat the details, and the tones we hear in this vid can be had. Tweed amps are kinda like model T Fords, old G.E. toasters and waffle irons, Craftsman tools, Levi's, Harleys, Jack Daniel's and other former American icons. Beautiful in their simplicity and built like a brick shit house When something's right, everybody knows it whether they're willing to admit it or not. Hallelujah and holy hoo-dee-doo-dah! can I get a amen?

I'm a huge tweed fan, and I know that some breakup is the reason to have a tweed, especially a lower wattage tweed. That said, most people don't go around with them at out of control full throttle with guitar vol at 10 on everything. One of the nicer features of a tweed are the tones you get right at the edge of breakup, just a hair before that, and just a hair after. If nothing but noise is your bag, I'm not knocking it. it's appropriate to do your thing, your way, whatever that may be, when you are crafting a work of art with a guitar and amp. That said, it does not appear that this was intended as art, but rather a demonstration of the amps' capabilities. An attempt to provide the viewer with the full palette of available tones, rather than the mudpie only, full on, buzzbox sampling herein, would have been infinitely more useful to the likely 90% of viewers who actually came to see all that the amp can do, and would have impressed us all as being a far less myopic formula for what could have been an informative video.

Would have been nice to hear a Tweed Vibrolux like the 1960 that is currently for sale at Tone Nut Amps in Virginia Beach.

A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! There is definitely a drop off in the tone and character of American amps. Although I am falling in love with the modern versions of the Twin and Deluxe.

It's funny to say but the older the better! They knew how to rock back in 1949!

Some of the amps cranked up sound like a clean Fender amp with a fuzz pedal in front. If I put a fuzz on the clean channel of my blues deluxe reissue, it sounds about the same as the first amp he played.
