- By the 1993-94 edition, the Whitbread Round the World Race had already transformed from an adventure imbued with Corinthian spirit to a professional sport where food, bedding and clothing were being optimised for performance not comfort. 💪
Among those leading the charge towards professionalism was Grant Dalton and his crew aboard the winning maxi yacht ‘New Zealand Endeavour’ 🇳🇿.
The 1993-94 edition was also the first race to feature the new Whitbread 60 class (with 10 boats entered), which caused memorable friction between Dalton and fellow Kiwis Chris Dickson, skipper of the W60 'Tokio' (which dismasted whilst leading Leg 5) and Ross Field, the class winner with Yamaha.
The crew of US Women’s Challenge 🇺🇸 all but mutinied after Leg 1. But Dawn Riley (watch leader from Maiden in the previous race) was brought in as skipper and the boat renamed Heineken from Leg 3 onwards. 🍻

Thanks so much for uploading this. Great to see historic coverage vs modern (-8
lol, Grant Dalton looks so different back then. background musics in the early '90s are so funky
Mustache!Dalton is something else.
4:16 these two will be your guides of the 1993-94 Whitbread Round the World Race for the Heineken trophy
37:21 on deck in the Whitbread fleet is one thing, but below deck is an whole another thing altogether
This is the first edition from my lifetime (not that I knew what the Ocean Race was as a baby, of course…)
Also, even in the early 90s we had debates over "oh no this new boat class is not as good as the prior one, we don't like change, why do we have to change" - this complaint is evergreen. And ever-irrelevant.
Interesting that going back to the early 90s we still had tobacco sponsors.
The American announcer sounds like Tim Heideker being serious for once
35:07 uh oh too many eager boats are over early
11:04 a little reminder about the doldrums
35:12 the guilty party
