Classic Lancer issue. Been living with this for over 7 years now, got used to switching hot to cold and back by reaching under and pushing it with my hand.
    Will try this though, thanks!

Wow, thanks so much for this! This was the first thing I broke on my Lancer after I bought it with 168k miles.
I broke the knob and never new how to fix it.
Everything I've worn out on this little Lancer I've been able to fix myself, from brakes and oil changes to motor mounts, control arms, struts and the ignition switch. All done rather easily.
These videos give the DIYer the confidence to dig in themselves. Dash panels are always a puzzle to me haha!

Just this morning my knob turned all the way from cold to hot with out the full feeling that some kind of flap fully switched over.
Now my knob will turn from cold to hot but come back about 45 degrees of the way back toward cold leaving me with slightly warmed are. Everything I've looked into over the past hour has led me here and I think this should save me a ton of time and money. Thanks in advance. I'll certainly post back if the problem is fixed.

  • @eaglemotive
    @eaglemotive 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

I recently ran into this problem and have discovered it is common on many Mitsubishi Automobiles. The cause of the problem has been assigned to a lack of a Cabin Filter letting dust and debris into the system, causing the blender door to get difficult to operate. Others have blamed the Shaft behind the Temp Control Knob being made of weak plastic material.
These Automobiles are manufactured with the Blender Door Mechanism encased in a Plastic Housing. The HVAC System is mostly Plastic. Plastic Shrinks with age. The plastic housing of the Blender Door will bind it in just a few years of shrinkage. The Cable and Gear system used to move the Blender Door can no longer work properly because the Track it is in has shrunk with age, and the tremendous temperatures we know happen in the Dash area from Sunlight make sure this will happen.
There is no fix for this other than replacing the entire HVAC Housing to relieve the clamping effect on the Blender Door. Not an economical solution to say the least.
My solution is to attach a lever to the teardrop shaped gear on the side of the HVAC box. Pushing it Forward for Heat and Pulling it Back for Cold. The door is moved easily into any blend position by this method.
Manufacturers take note, this is a design fault.

I’m cut up bruised, bleeding and ready to sell this car lol. It just reached 110,000 miles for a 2004 Lancer. I can’t find any how to’s on the door blender gear for the climate control. $600 to $1000 if I have to take it in. I will never buy a Mitsubishi again after this. @@sr2racing391As of now I’m using pliers to pull down the white gear under the dash for ac and a rubber mallet to pound the gear up for heat. I took it to a mechanic and they would have to order a blender door (hard to find that part) and it would cost 1400.00 usd for parts and labor. Blender door was around 800.00. Stupid way of making something. Lol. Frustrating as hell because the door is so hard to turn and you basically have to cut the white sealed box open to get at it. There has to be an easier way.

I have actually replaced the shaft. My sister roke hers and I was able to take the panel off and replace it. You will need to remove the control panel to make it easier for yourself. Make sure you disconnect all the wires shown in this video and also there are two more wire connections in the middle you need to disconnect. Once you take the panel out just look on the underside and you will see that the outside shaft connects to the a bigger know inside. You can pop it out with a screwdriver.

Do you know how to remedy that or if it is difficult to do? Anyone else notice that?) thanks again for the video.

hey man, great video, I learned a lot from it. I have a couple of questions though. Will that gear set lever work on a 2002 Mitsubishi lancer? The ones I have are the ones from the factory and I don't know if this part will work on my vehicle. The other one is, that one crank you pointed out with the thing sticking out, just by itself, without the parts that crank it from cold to hot gets kind of hard to turn once it gets around the middle. Now, the heater control wire that I have is crooked so I'm tracking it needs to be replaced. Any advise you can provide will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Ok so I have this problem on my 03 lancer but I also have the same problem with my face to feet and defrost knob. Would that be the right cable instead of the left?

    Will this fix my issue?
My Know does not spin to the left it stops mid point. But I can spin all the way to the right side. My AC works 100% and the air with AC on or off is always cold. But when I turn it to the right for heat it does not do anything it stays COLD. Can it be this issue here? Again it does not spin to the left fully just like here Its stuck

the blend door inside the heater box may actually be broken. get under the steering wheel and turn your temp know to see whats going on down there.

Ok I did it. And remember my knob gets stuck just like it does here. It does the same exact thing. The cable slightly moves and the gears pretty much dont move at all. It someone moved and stopped wouldnt do anything.

Spent an hour doing this and it didn’t work for me. The knob goes to full cold but now it gets stuck going towards heat and won’t stay on till heat.
