himmel had issues with frieren using "flashy" spells back then only when she used it on the aura's slaves because they were once soldiers. she basically didnt care then and saw no point in not being flashy since they were already dead until himmel told her his issues with her going out like that on them.
Himmel basically told her that she needed to respect the dead and try to do as little damage as possible to them. (You can somewhat tell because that's what Graff Granat said right after: "They're hardly damaged. Thank you for respecting the Heroes of the North.")
I love that Denken decided that for the purposes of this whole test Laufen is now his grandkid and Ricther is his son and they had opposite reactions to it with Laufen immediately agreeing and rolling with it and Ricther ccompaining endlessly about it but still ending up going along with Denken in the end. It's a hilarious dynamic, especially since Denken is endlessly patient with Richter trying to argue and get a reaction from him.

The spell that copy Frieren used against Fern is called (or at least referred to as) "The Height of Magic"
So cool to hear your thoughts on all the characters. Love that you have become so attached to many of them and take the time to appreciate many of them, not just the main characters. Great videos and creator!
Also idk if you've watched Hunter X Hunter (if you haven't it's my and many peoples no. 1 anime ever and you should react to it!!), but the voice of Serie is actually the same VA as Killua, one of the main characters in HxH.
Since the fight started, Frieren's replica never gave Fern a glance, because she said she underestimated her, it didn't even turn to look at her after she blocked her attacks. The replica only recognizes Fern as a threat when it is almost defeated by her.
I think from now on Frieren is going to think twice before underestimating Fern.
technically she did giver her a glance but i think the bigger issue she has is the replica knew she was going off an equally incredibly strong opponent. one distraction would be enough to get killed and she knew that. i think its more of a case of she just cant take her eyes of frieren for one instant.

The way I explain the whole visualization aspect of magic in my own head is, not only do you have to envision the effect of your magic, but you have to believe that it will happen. I can envision myself flying easily, but I intuitively know it wont happen if I jump off a cliff. So for Ubel to cut something with Reelseiden, she has to envision cutting through it, and believe without a shadow of a doubt that it will cut.
a top 5 is hard to do in this show when someone like methode or edel can show up and be awesome in just a few episodes, stolz was a great example too! i think your love of richter is totally based. thank you for reacting!
Man! I agree! In other animes, it's normal for other characters to have hidden agendas and be a bad person but in Frieren, everyone is just a good person, I don't think there is a character in this anime that just plain bad, except for the demons, hell even Ubel is a super likable character...
The important part isn't just Fern's speed it's her control and concealment (related I think). The control also helps with the rapid fire. Those are talents where building a big mana pool and learning skills take longer to manifest at least relative to Frieren. She's a prodigy. Seems it's bc she was born with it and started training from such a young age
its just like kid that can use smartphone way better than old people...heiter recognising fern's talent and drilling a strong basic for her before frieren came realy did came to a clutch....

I really love Sense. She is a little creepy but her test is set up exactly for her mindset. Sense wants cooperative helpful mages. Her test actively punished people who didn't want to cooperate or hindered others. If they had worked together from the beginning this test would have been much easier and it is plausible that none of the mages would have failed. Sense taught them the exact lesson she wanted: first-class mages need to work together and trust each other.
I respect how well her test was designed to fit her personality while still fairly challenging the mages.
This episode was really important to show us the true power gap of Frieren against all others. We really can see now that she holds back the whole series, because she want Fern to make her own experiences and overcome troubles. She is basicly Flamme now, only use a grasp of her power if necessary.
Really looking forward if we will learn more about the power she used. Fern couldnt detect mana in this attack. My theory is that Frieren broke the barrier to magic and instead of manipulating Mana/magic like any other mage, she uses natural power, the laws of magic itself.
In the series all mages often explain how they see fluctuation in mana and Denken could sense Frieren use mana, because it disturbs the mana. In this case her clone uses grafity to crush Fern, Fern cant protect from something she never witnessed. I also think that Übel does it too, but she only use it out of intuition not understanding. Her mind is weird, but she can simply cut anything she can imagine even if the laws of magic would normally forbid that.
Also small detail: Methode beat Fern, she stands and looks down were Fern layed before she vanished. She is on the same power level as Denken, Übel and Wirbel.

She's strong she has a same fighting style with Frieren. and its funny that she really didnt need to hug Frieren for binding magic test like she did to Fern only need to touch them but shes fond of cute and small things.
Wirble is the type of gamer who has pro skills and is always carrying his friends. Frieren is clearly a show about gamers.

Pure magic no staff no casting just visualization. "Pinnacle of Magic". Frieren so strong you need a Frieren and Fern to beat it.
This was an awesome episode. I was curious if you had watched the Apothecary Diaries? It and Frieren seemed to be a couple of surprise successes the past couple of seasons. I imagined you watch a lot more than you make videos for.
Okay, I think there is no better time to think and analyze why so many people are so down bad for Ubel. Consider this a short essay:
1) Outfit. Yes, revealing outfits are NOT uncommon in anime, but most of the women in Frieren dress rather covered up, so Ubel stands out quite easily with her outfit. The effect is doubly stronger if you do not watch any other anime in parallel with Frieren. Not to mention the fact that the operator clearly wants to emphasize all of the above😏
2) Hair, or rather its color. Most of the characters in Frieren have normal hair color (dark, blond, red) and only a few stand out (Fern, Himmel, Aura, Frieren and Ubel herself). The green hair color is not only unique among the others in this anime, but also has a rather interesting shade that I personally associate with some kind of poison (partly reflecting her sadistic personality)
3) Eyes/Gaze. Ubel's eyes are half-closed most of the time. Often this reflects that the character is tired or bored, but in our case these eyes rather indicate a certain deceit and observation. In addition, the bored look most of the time emphasizes the moments when Ubel enters berserk mode and her eyes become crazy. This all says one thing - although Ubel is bloodthirsty, she knows when and with whom she can have a blast (bandits in the forest, the exam and its participants, the battlefield and the warriors on it). Although she is not a genius, she has more intelligence and self-control than a typical maniac. Ubel can be called a well-socialized sadist.
4) Stickiness to Land. It is ambiguous whether Ubel actually has any romantic/sexual feelings for Land, but her behavior around him gives off a Yandere vibe, which is largely loved precisely because of their persistence towards the person they are interested in. This seems even more attractive in contrast to Fern, whose Tsundere antics towards Stark irritate me a little. The romantic overtones and her persistent behavior are enough to make guys start whispering, "What a lucky bastard!" Even if Ubel does not have sincere feelings for Land (which I myself do not believe) - who said that you cannot build a stable relationship with a sociopath? 😅
5) Battle Junkie/Blood Knight. A character archetype that revels in fight and sometimes lives for that. In many ways they are similar to sadists, but sadists are primarily concerned with the possibility of hurting someone and because of this they often choose the weak and helpless. The Blood Knight is looking for challenges for themself, which makes them more noble than just bloodthirsty maniac, but still just as entertaining. Watching anime, I personally always associate myself with such characters, because they are here for the same thing I am for - cool battles and interesting drama. Well, Ubel is also special in that it’s not often that a girl is a Blood Knight. I can remember a lot of male Blood Knights (Hisoka, Sukuna, Touji, Guts, Nosferatu Zodd, Kenpachi) but I can’t immediately remember women who love battles.
6) Crazy enough to work. Let's be honest - despite her intelligence, Ubel is an ignoramus. She does not learn magic normally and achieves success rather from ignorance. But that’s exactly what makes her cool! What should be a flaw is her main strength, allowing her to bypass the laws of logic, learning and magic. This sounds especially appealing to audiences because most people hate spending time learning skills. At the same time, I would not call her a Mary Sue because she is still not omnipotent and she admits it herself.
7) Depravity/Forbidden fruit is sweet. People in general are drawn to amoral characters for one simple reason - heroes do what they have to, and villains do what they want. And anti-heroes like Ubel are bad enough to stand out and seem brave/free, but not monstrous enough to be disgusting. This is the root cause of my personal interest in her - of all Frieren characters (not counting demons), she is the only one who can be called immoral.
To sum it all up, the overall reason for Ubel's appeal is that she is a successful rebel. A rebel against local fashion (just look at her outfit again). A rebel against morality (but again, not to a completely monstrous extreme). A rebel against logic itself, after all. In other words, she eats when she wanna eat, plays with what amuses her, and kill whoever's in her way. She lives as befits her nature. If no one can grasp that, then that's their problem😉. Although she is a minor character, she is one of my favorites in Friren

When smashing Fern, the Frieren clone has the same eyes as Übel and Serie.
Frieren using anything but ordinary offensive magic. Now you witness how our universe starts, with Frierens big bang! Props to the architects of the Tomb, rly. Count 5 Mimics, i probably guess, a mimic against replica frieren could be maybe more efficient. i guess that Übel is actualy rly a superpower oO
Kodus to Fern but she's just millenium younger behind Frieren. She'd be a splat on the wall if Frieren dont immediately blasted the clone.
But the plan was amazingly well thought and executed aside from Fern being the actual bait. Lol

Übel's power imo doesn't have much science to it, her magic cuts and it's like she said, some things are meant to be cut. Kanne for example lacks in imagination, but Lawine & her are still young.
yes the explanation for übel doesnt make any sense.
It would mean that someone who doesnt know about defensive magic would be able to ignore it.
So Quals zooltrak in episode 3 would have just gone through it, because he visualized them being blown away.

Übel's gift is cutting through BS. A lot of defensive magic is about getting in your opponent's head and causing them to doubt themselves. Übel is like herf-derf scissors go shnict!
The EFX animators, once again, got a chance to coooooook in ep26. The reality breaking spells Frieren and Cloneren used were spectacularly imagined! From singularities, to golems, to whatever the heck they were casting at each other before Cloneren unleashed an old school Zoltraak, the visuals of the spells were all jaw dropping.

if you notice copy frieren can use black zoltraak just like qual.....and fern only can use white zoltraak
Well Fern didn't had to kill people, so her using the og zoltraak is not that important and she just uses the "improved version" that is general offensive magic. Vice versa Frieren knows all itterations of zoltraak so her clone that is about to kill people uses the original. So it is not they can not, but rather they don't need to.

The clone Frieren used the original zoltraak that was all black which is even more deadly and that was nice nod to what Frieren would use when she gets pushed hard enough. Frieren praising Fern that it was 80 years that she was forced to use that magic that is a sign of true respect. I also don't get the thirst for Übel but then again the internet is weird enough.
It's not more deadly against things that turn to dust when killed, white Zoltraak is better for that. It does show that Frieren has some nasty man killer options tho.
