You can't tell if it's a boy or girl based on the heart rate. Some people like to use that to make a guess but it isn't accurate. An ultrasound will actually tell you the gender. But 12 weeks is early and may also not be accurate yet.

Why would your doctor tell you that with just guessing by the heart rate? Not very professional.
Thats a myth, you can not tell a baby's gender by their heart rate only an ultra sounds can tell you what you're having
