    Right, now before you leave any pesky comments, they have already made plans to shorten the season, the Australian test players are all getting involved, and the whole comp is kind of picking up in general. But this video was written before the season started and I couldn’t really alter it. So some stuff in here seems outdated but there you go the sun rises tomorrow. Happy thanksgiving

    mate the BBL is growing so much this year. The average crowd attendance last year was about 7,000 whereas it has jumped right up to almost 16,000 and that gets dragged down because of poor crowds in Hobart, Marvel and spotless stadium. Optus stadium gets almost 30,000 per game. Whilst Adelaida oval, SCG, and the GABBA get about 20,000 per game. MCG gets about 15,000 per game so this year has actually been a huge success.

    I remember BBL I think 4 and 5 , the one with Brett Lee bowling his last over ever and then Moises failing the run out, amazing scenes. When it's like you DID NOT want to miss a match, and because every match was on 10 it was easy to get interested and stay interested. Then moving games to Foxtel didn't help either. In my opinion if it had never gone to ten, it would have never had those glory days era years at all, it would have just chugged along continuing barely being noticed.
    One match a night, on the same channel and mostly the same time was amazing, basically for lack of a better word a month long reality show. Seriously, you've now got some games going past 12am on the east coast. Idk who they think is watching

  • @DomQuartuccio
    @DomQuartuccio 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    Another problem with the BBL in my opinion is the advertising of matches, I attended a few of the ICC World Cup games in Adelaide during 2022 and to the best of my recollection, not once was the Australian test summer of Cricket or BBL mentioned at the venue on the loudspeakers or on any of the LED advertising boards around the oval, even if these matches were in October/November and the Tests/BBL not starting for a month or so, the lack of effort to get any word out there isn't doing them any good.

    • @jakesaddo
      @jakesaddo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I did an MCG tour in the lead up to the World Cup and they mentioned that when the World Cups are contested the ICC takes temporary ownership of all the grounds in use, and it is them that dictate everything at the venues, such as food, drink, advertisements. Cricket Australia does not get a say in anything regarding World Cups, nor do the State Cricket Governing Bodies nor the Venue owners

    • @DomQuartuccio
      @DomQuartuccio 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@jakesaddo There you go, thanks for that! Even during the Test match at AO, there wasn’t much mentioning of the BBL and that was all Cricket Australia managed.

      The advertising of matches is a problem for all cricket Australia matches. The ODI services verses the West Indies, for example, wasn’t advertised at all and no one even realised it was on. I think this stems from Cricket Aus traditionally relying on tv networks advertising their games for them. They don’t do anything themselves

    As we now know, they have reduced the games to 10 which I think is a huge positive, along with this, I do think this season the crowds have improved (even if its slightly) esp for a few teams like adelaide and brisbane. So i think its heading in the right projectory which is positive news! I'd also argue the cricket this season has been pretty good and entertaining for the most part

  • @samgorrie8015
    @samgorrie8015 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I'm a bit late, but I think there's probably something else important to note.
    I remember, growing up with the BBL at the games were packed both with families but also with people enjoying a night out. I was one of those kids that got into it early and went to every home match. As I have grown up, it's seeming to be targeted more and more towards kids. Perhaps more noticable to me as I grew up, but still something noted to me by my parents becoming more and more structured towards kids, especially when I've had "nights" at the cricket with my friends and it's just not that same vibe as it used to have.
    A chance to hang out with friends, have a few drinks, chat while getting to watch the game is such a great market that the BBL could also tap into to give it a different flavour too. It's great to have such a child-friendly and -marketed game, but the vibe of people going out to hang at the cricket would be something to return toward.

    I've been to a few BBL games in a couple of cities this season and while it's not exactly the same I don't think the product has taken a massive hit. Sure covid has delayed the international talent pool a bit but it's still respectable quality. Hopefully by 2024 the covid issues will be long gone.
    If you don't enjoy BBL cricket the same way anymore, and I don't, there's a simple answer to that. We all just got older. With it's bright colours and all the sound effects and the ground and everything it's really an event for kids, though can still be enjoyed by older teens and adults when at it's best.
    Good work on this series mate, hopefully we might see another cricket video before footy season rolls around 🤞

      I couldn't agree more. I'm 16, and a week ago I went to the Heat game against the Scorchers, and had already realised the target audience of the comp: children. Fascinatingly, i went to a WBBL game (also against the Scorchers) at AB Field, and the sold-out 10K felt so much better than the 16K at the Gabba. The women's game felt more... grown up. I hadn't been to a (men's) game since the start of BBL09, in which I was lucky to be a ball kid, and even comparing then to now, it just felt better then. CA seem to think that the only way to get people into cricket is to make it seem like a show, with cricket on the side, despite good old-fashioned Tests getting consistently decent crowds.I wish they took a page out of the IPL and made the comp more 'grown up.'

    Extremely great video. I'm glad that BBL14 will bring in a shorter season, but I'm not a fan of the 3 game finals season and personally think they should make it four games like the IPL. (1v2, loser players winner of 3v4) Also the season NEEDS to be played DURING the holiday season, not before, not after. This season, the season opener started a couple of days before the school holidays and the season ends after the school holidays. I personally think that the season should finish before the Australian Open starts (or before the finals of the Australian Open starts) as it could possibly help boost TV viewership alongside attendances for Stars and Renegades. The Seven/Fox/Kayo deal also needs to be addressed as some games aren't free to air, which definitely affects viewership of the league. And keep in mind that from BBL14 onwards, only 33 games out of 44 will be free to air on Seven. 25% of games are accessible through a paywall, which is extremely disappointing. But we can all see that the competition is starting to get it together thanks to the decisions Cricket Australia are making. This is just my opinion.

    Sydney is an issue with regards to weather now , so wash out games need a solution. I think adopting a round robin, carnival style tournament, starting in cities that are less likely to get high rainfall in Summer , Adelaide, Perth , Brisbane, Melbourne , Cairns maybe Darwin . Much like the old tri series with Australia A in 50 over. Go around the country. Top 4 play off. Shortens the season. Packs a lot of games in. Spectators get value for money. Cities would get a good dose of cricket. Teams would have to perform all the time to make finals. Start games on a Friday afternoon, dusk and then night. Then on Saturday . Camp moves on the Sunday. Whilst kids are on school holidays, go to mid week.
    I think start around Xmas , finish mid to late January. Promotes tourism. Go see your team play interstate People are generally moving around over Xmas anyway. The BBL is now competing with the UAE and other leagues . So the product needs to be appealing no matter what's decided.

    Two more reasons that get over looking when it comes to the popularity of the BBL going down.
    Reason one the TV rights deal is awful, and not in the way you think it is, but the reason why it's awful because having games exclusive Kayo/Foxtel always hurts the popularity of the sport, because they are behind a paywall, which some people can't pay for, or don't want to pay for it because of other reasons that I don't want to get into.
    Reason number two sandpaper gate yes I know it's almost been 5 years later, but there is still a lot of people in this country upset over it, and it's led to this very difficult relationship with the Australian public for Australian cricket, and the BBL popularity has taken head because of it.

    • @Snakey8181

      I agree! If a sport is behind a paywall I won’t watch it. I think the AFL does the best with providing a good showing on free to air tv. Sandpaper gate still has put a bad taste in my mouth. I like the aussies winning just like any other Australian but as a kid watching cricket in the 2000’s I remember it being fun. You had dizzy with his celebration, Warnie being a character and Hussey just seemed to love being anywhere near the sport. They were serious but seemed to not take themselves so seriously. The scorchers are meant to be veterans and feared all throughout the tournament.
    The sixers are meant to be able to do anything.
    The Renegades are meant to be a team that can absolutely rip open a team, but only in certain situations.
    The Thunder are meant to have very deep, and strong batting.
    The Heat are meant to make it to the finals from one player doing well.
    The Hurricanes are meant to be a wild card team.
    The Strikers are meant to either be very strong, or in the bottom two.
    The stars are always meant to hold the records.

The AFL is played during the middle of the year, the iconic tradition of Aussie tests are played over Christmas, so Big Bash has to be played over the Christmas holidays which clashes with the Test season, when the franchise was first made it was seen as a good thing because more families would be available for crowds at games.

I've been enjoying the latter half of the 22-23 BBL season on TV. And that was after I watched the Thunder get bowled out for a record low 15 runs at Sydney Olympic Park.
    Private school toffs. They really are disconnected from the rest of Australian society, aren't they?

      ODI’s are just seen as an inferior version of t20 now. If you want to watch old fashioned cricket you watch tests/first class, if you want to see guys bash 6s then watch t20, ODIs are stuck in the middle. Before t20 existed, ODIs played the role of a faster form of cricket but they were since replaced.

      @@stantonclark naah T20's don't provide what ODI's provide, it being a middle ground between the traditional test format and the T20 format is an intriguing thing to me...
      If the pitch is sporting with something for both the bowlers and batsmen, a 50 overs game between 2 strong evenly matched teams can be much more exciting and engaging than a T20 game on the same pitch between the same 2 teams.
      I would watch a game of 50 overs cricket rather than T20 game any day, provided I have the time...

    I for one find it bewildering that the competition marketed itself as this techboligically futuristic and innovative take on cricket, yet hasn't had any real changes or new gimmicks since it's inception. It's such a contrast.
    Zing bails, ref cams and player mics were creative. It's almost as if all the creative and risk taking people within CA have left along with those who understand what breeds competition and passion (I admit those people probably never existed, and those obvious oversights didn't make themselves known til later).
    It doesnt make sense how the same backroom staff can be so progressive 10 years ago, yet have literally zero of what made them work since. Pretty pathetic really. The organisation could do worse than hire some disrupters from other sports around the world

    I agree with this, there are far too many games now and I don't recognize any of the players in my favorite teams anymore. Not to mention I'm sick of having KFC fried chicken splashed on the screen for half the match. Get rid of female commentators from the Men's league and get rid of male commentators from the WBBL. As a long time cricket fan I can't take female commentators seriously as it's impossible they have the long term first hand experience on the topic of men's cricket. People like Ricky Ponting know their shit and thus what they have to say is based on many years of experience directly related to what's going on. So Limit the games back to what it was, make the games matter, maintain the same players, less greasy fried chicken sponsorship, use commentators that actually have experience and expert knowledge in the form of the game they are talking about and less wokeness.

    BBL needs to shorten the season by like 3 games ( per team ) so 11. U play each team once ( minimum ) and then Renegades as an expample u play Stars twice ( rivalry ) and then based of ladder pos should the other games be decided. Like the AFL the higher u finish the harder the fixture. ( and i know the BBL only has 8 teams but it's just a concept )
