    I'm going to try this on a baja designs number plate. I have to say, if it works I'm going to try to send as much traffic as I can to you and your excellent videos. Thanks so much for this! I love DIY stuff!

    Rode my DR650 from Arizona to Pennsylvania to visit my sister and to say I did the ride. While at my sister’s I cut one out, and a blank to keep in my bag. Awesome job fine tuning the measurements. It fits like it was meant for this bike. 100 props to you for putting this up for free use. Stay safe friend.

    I followed your template closely in the making of my own windscreen. It turned out very well and I consider it a very worthwhile addition to my DR-Z 400S. Thanks for the excellent video.

    I bought a garbage can and cut it up, albeit a bit roughly.. I couldn't get my medical shears to work well for me, like you have, but my belt knife worked great. As cautious as I was when it was all done and attached with that super duty Velcro, I am a believer!! What a hell of a difference that I wouldn't expect from a flimsy cut out piece from a garbage can!! I will let the guys that I ride with at work take my bike for a ride to feel the difference. THANKS FOR THE GENEROUS POST!! I would like to buy you a beer. Oh and just for the record, you could've had this in any measurement and I would've converted it without a whiny peep.

    Excellent how-to video for the screen.
    Thanks for the suggestions and reasons why you use these dimensions.
    DIY low cost mods are my favorite projects.
    I really like your encouragement to experiment with various shapes and heights.
    Two thumbs way up!

    It actually looks better than pretty much every windshield I have seen for the DR. I might have to stop by Lowes on the way home from work tomorrow. Thanks for the how-to!

    Sorry guys. I don't sell these. That's why I did the "how-to". I was thinking about trying to patent and sell them, but I just don't have the time. So DIY it, and it's damn near free!

    Great diy windscreen, the trash can cost me one dollar and the windscreen added mpg's by stopping the "chest drag". I'm 5'8" and went with 13 1/2" the wind now strikes my face shield and helps the rain-x keep my shield cleaner in the rain.

    I saw one of these on a DRZ here in Western Australia , the rider told me about your video . I used a $6 sheet of polypropylene from the hardware , as the rubbish bins were around $20 to $30 here . Works great , thank you for the design

    • @brianbullock5067
      @brianbullock5067 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      hmm , IDK , 3 mm maybe , I used a heatgun and straight edge to manage the bends , its not perfect , but does a perfect job . Deflecting the wind off my chest , and cheap as to be able to trial and error , rangafrombanga

    Used your template and used a 15 gal plastic barrel. I used a torch to bend it. It was alreay rounded and turned out “ok.” I started tall and cut it down three times to get rid of buffeting. It works. Thanks.

    I can totally vouch for this DIY. It's brilliant. I made one thinking 'no way this is going to hold with velcro at speed'. But it worked fantastic! Never budged, and made all the difference as far as wind protection on the highway goes.
    Its brilliant because its sturdy enough to block wind but if your helmet (or face) makes contact in the gnarly stuff - its maleable enough that you wont be hurt. I eventually bought a Baja windshield simply for aesthetics but this thing actually looks kind of cool. Mine was black so it looked a bit Mad Max.

  • @justinj291

    I like this design. I just made one today out of posterboard using the measurements from the first on you showed. I plan to try various heights and maybe attempt to make a rounded one out of lexan or something. I might have to get some help from my pops to do that. Either way, thanks for the diy on this one. It seems so simple, but it actually looks badass in my opinion for what it is, and couldn't be more cost effective. Thanks for taking the time to post the video of this.

  • @fmlstewart

    As far as material, all I can say is whatever you can shape. I use plastic cans about 2mm thick.
    I have a Clark on my DRZ and an IMS on my DR. Both are great. No issues. No complaints. The Clark cap is tight due to a swelling gasket, but not really a problem.

    Brilliant idea! One question though: What kind of plastic is this? I don’t think we have something called plaster boards here in Sweden. What other use cases are these sheets used for usually? // Thanks in advance

      Late response to your comment but for what it’s worth he said poster board. I e heavy construction paper. Like the stuff we’d make for presentations for school science class.

    • @igorpopov1042
      @igorpopov1042 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Plastic is taken from a garbage can. Poster board, he is talking about, he used only as a template. The screen itself needs thicker plastic. Garbage can or anything made out of thick plastic will do the job.

    Thanks for share your idea, I use metric measurements, but still, I appreciate that someone share something to everybody, I can use a imperial tape or just make conversion, no big deal,

  • @fmlstewart
    @fmlstewart  8 ปีที่แล้ว +81

    I'm not a liberal who would ever apologize for being an American, and I do a lot of construction work, so the measurements I gave are in inches. If the math is to difficult, just download a conversion app, or go to the store where you buy your skinny jeans, and buy a Taylor's measuring tape. Which is in inches...

    • @laizalott
      @laizalott 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      "I'm not a liberal who would ever apologize for being an American"
      Is that like the political-commentary version of "no-homo"?? Like, "Brah, no homo, but women should be allowed to vote."
      Humor aside, measurements are appreciated...I'll turn my ruler around to the imperial side and give this a try! Finally a use for all this heavy-duty double-hook tape I have laying around.

      Inches are bad, however I like the sentiment, it's your video, complainers can go to another.

    • @twowheeledsmurph
      @twowheeledsmurph 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I live in Canada. We supposedly have the metric system. The only metric measurement I use is speed limits and temperature. Everything else is imperial. I weigh myself in pounds. I buy produce by the pound. I'm a carpenter and measure in inches. If anyone has an issue with not having metric measurements then it's their problem and they can do the conversion. Kudos to making an awesome video after your extensive tutorials on the bike forums. I'm about to make one of these today thanks to your knowledge. Cheers my friend!

    • @NotALizardPerson81
      @NotALizardPerson81 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Admitting that the metric system is far superior isn't apologizing for being American. And no, I'm not a liberal. I'm a proud conservative and you can keep your irrational "GO TEAM GO!" mentality to yourself. It's the most harmful thing to one's country.

    Have you considered the interlocking style of velcro? I suppose no need to fix what works though. I'm going to perhaps try mounting my acrylic windscreen to my WR2505 with this plastic locking Velcro after watching your video. I like how light and minimalist your design is. Safe too.

    Do you think it would be possible to do this windscreen and somehow connect more of the bin to the windscreen and the stock tank shrouds to make a dakar type fairing i mean it would be just for appearance obviously. and could be attached to the shrouds with Velcro just like the windscreen in your video and also connected to the windscreen?

  • @NotALizardPerson81

    First off.... AWESOME videos!! I watched all 3, at least twice. Do you still have your DR, or DRZ?? I am wondering what you decided is the best "angle of Attack" for the fairing?? I am making a custom template for my KTM 520EXC using many inputs from your videos. I started by making a DRZ template as a baseline, and will eventually use it when I get back home to my DRZ..... It just seems that the attack angle might help me keep from having to go through too many iterations.... I am going to try to find the angle of attack on the new production Honda Africa twin also, because I am thinking that angle would be about the same for all of these rally type fairings, what ever the brand. Thanks again for your video work!!

    Thanks for sharing, tried it on a trip to Ottawa, worked great, however it came off at 72 miles/hr, or 120km/hr, so I added velcro here and there, and wow, I made the second one using the stove at the lowest setting to soften up the plastic and its much easier to fold with precision, and again thanks, I saved up a shit load of money and it looks good

    so what really bothers me while riding is the wind turbulence in the helmet. bothers my ears. ear plugs help of course but would like something more.
    since you claim the wind dumps out at throat height, does it make turbulence in the helmet worse or does it help?

    DR650. More versatile. More dependable. More power. Will do single track and Interstate and is better for long distance as well. The DRZ is only better in the most technical stuff.

    • @taylor2105
      @taylor2105 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      fmlstewart get the 400, if you think you want the 650 for those reasons get yourself a v-strom or a verses instead.
      Surprisingly capable off road (look up fortnine on TH-cam)
      The drz is a road legal dirtbike.

    • @fmlstewart
      @fmlstewart  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Taylor St. Pierre dude, do you GeorgeSt. Pierre?
      I've had a drz400. it sucks s a dirt bike, and sucks s a super moto. the dr 650 is the shit!!! But, rude what you've got to the best of your ability. I guarantee, unless you're Taddy Blasuziak, you're nit out riding your bike. Ride on!!!

    • @taylor2105
      @taylor2105 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      fmlstewart I have a ktm 350 sx-f and the drz. Honestly the drz surprises me what it can do. It goes everywhere the ktm can go. It's heavy and rough for sure but It climbs every hill like the real bike and wheelies like mad. I've tried ktms 690 enduro r too. It's a much better bike, but it's also significantly more expensive. I wouldn't make the trade.
      When Yamaha (if) comes out with the t7 I'll make the trade though.

    • @fmlstewart
      @fmlstewart  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Taylor St. Pierre yeah, I've had a 400 exc, and an XR400R. I've had two KLR's, '07 and a '12. I've never had a bad bike. Love them all, but the DR650 does it all better than any other bike I've ever owned. I'm currently riding a Triumph '13 800xc. It's badass! But I still miss my DR650. I'll be getting another soon!

    • @taylor2105

      fmlstewart maybe when I'm done with the 400 I'll have to try the 650. I've ridden the klr but I sure wouldn't trade that one...
      I've also got a super adventure... But it's awful off road. It's more of a sport touring bike than a true adventure bike. It's just too heavy.
      Itll be for sale next spring

      Esharq Niz I don't sell any. That's why I made the video, so people could make their own.

    dude why dont you just build these and sell them? I mean i would be happy to spend $60 on one of these vs the10000000 they charge for a peice of bent molded plastic they sell you.

    It was solid at over 100 mph. Regularly ride at 70-75 with no issues.
