You did a good job formatting this versus video. 👍 And good job finding a path for Fearow to differentiate itself. Taking risks is appropriate when playing from behind.
I'm always about the risk/reward and trying to really get a good run. Every once in a while I'll route a certain way, have a good route, and then just redo it because it's too safe and lower rated. Ha, can't swap the sodie pop. It's a staple at this point. Glad you are enjoying all the updated stuff! I haven't grown that much. Likely the last time you watched I was at like 11-14k subs. It's just been a slow and steady 200-400 subs the last year or so.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 I remember being bummed out and looking at your metrics like a year ago, I should check old comments and see the date but I remember you were doing the best content and only had around 5k subs and got like 2-4k views per video and I was worried you'd stop, I know it's been a slow road however just like Jrose's channel came up, it takes awhile to break through the barrier but your subs are growing and that gets new eyes on your videos, the market for your videos are all of scott's thoughts and jrose's viewers plus all the people who've never seen this content yet. Out of all the channels that do this you're the best it just takes time for people to discover you but the growth should be snowballing, it just takes awhile to get started. Edit: Oh as far as the chocolate milk goes, it's got almost as much sugar as soda pop but you don't drink the same amount as you would soda so it's not as bad, I barely ever drink soda, chocolate milk is where it's at, you shouldn't switch but it would be a nice easter egg on one of the future videos, maybe april 1st
Nah, I started Pokemon content on this channel at about 9k subs. It was a dead channel I had sitting around and in hindsight I should have started another one but I went this route. So even if you watched 2 1/2 years ago, I would have been over 9k.
Appreciate that brother. I'd like to do more. I got some busy times coming up and some runs to wittle down into videos but it's something to think about. It did about middle of the pack and that's good enough for me to look into another later!
Yea Fearow put up a valiant effort and if I didn't race these, there's a chance I did level 13 Brock splits for both but they both pushed each other to higher ratings.
I gotta hand it to you matt, this was a great video. Its no surprise dodrio comes out on top of the tier list of all the birds, but i thought farfetch'd would squeak by it in the end.
Yea but it's stats are so bad and it has to use boosting moves so early that it's hard for it to compete. That's where it ultimately lost it. Just like the majority of the top 10ish runs, the less the boosts, the better. Speed, speed, speed.
Great work with the versus format! Hope it succeeds but I don't mind the traditional solo content either if that's easier to get out. My only thoughts with the training super cut in victory road is to cut out the item menuing after each battle to make it even smooth. Awesome video!
It looks so so but it's still early at this point. I guess I could cut out the menuing but I mainly cut out all of the stuff that wasn't the overworld.
I'm really enjoying the vs. design. Hopefully it wasn't too much extra work. It could be cool to see something like this with all of the water types too. Great work as always!
I'm trying to get a workflow down but I don't have one dedicated to this kind of content. I'll get better for the next one but at one point, I thought I was done with footage and I just wasn't happy with how Fearow did so I went back in and subsequently that made me go back in with Dodrio. But it was an interesting dynamic and without the VS format here, I wouldn't have pushed so hard!
Tombstoner brother!!! This one is going to be a close one i think. Hard to call previously i wouldve said fearow but after looking over a few things im thinking dodrio may be able to edge it out. We will see!
I love a good VS video, and I'm glad my 3-headed boy showed up. I feel bad that in every playthrough I've ever done, I never catch a doduo/dodrio, I just always have a flyer by the time I get to their location! :D
REAL ONE! I also like this type of content Matt, keep it coming. I was surprised to see the times but I knew Dodrio would win the race . Great job brother!
The VS race is really a breakthrough on your channel Matt, love it! indeed a gigantic project for VS race, keep up the good work! gonna do some ice type pokemon vs race before xmas? by the way, real one!! as always!!
I'm glad you enjoyed it! As for Ice types, I think I've done all but one for gen 1. It would be cool to have a ton of time to do extra videos like last year but I just don't have the time this year. I'm wrapping up some projects and had to do a big conversion on Crystal that I'm still tweaking but some fun runs for sure, just not really thematic.
I know you're always trying to move through the videos quickly, but I have always wondered the percentage of mandatory battles that occur north of Cerulean. If you ever get a chance! Loved the bird fight!
Farfetch'd getting able to badge boost glitch with Swords Dance so early is a definite game changer. But my money is just on DoDrio.. it's speed and attack are just so good.
Nicely done! Both were more similar then I thought they would. Both are having an access to the best flying move in gen 1,in trems of a practical usage, and they are both fast with the same option to badge boost. But I betted on Dodrio, because of its base stats ,and the access to body slam. 😊But at least Fearow had double edge which is a good alternative too.😊 I have enjoyed the format quite a lot. I hope you'll do more in the future. Keep it up!
Definitely! It was one of those situations where I tried a vs video in like 2021 and it bombed but I like the idea and decided to not be discouraged and try again. We'll see how it goes. I'd like to see how some weird matchups would do. These were similar and a good 'starter' vs though. I just don't know how wacky I want to get with it lol.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Sometimes you need time to figure your style of narration and editing to pull it off ,while keeping things interesting for the viewer. 😊 You'll be able to improve more and more as you try out new things. 😁
Variety is the spice of life! A glass half full mentality of just goofing around and not being tethered to TH-cam as a job is that I'm free to try and do anything I want without 60k people yelling at me.
And here we are! Reached the video answering my question about Dodrio. Fun fact, out of all those birds, Dodrio probably got the most buffs , especially when Pidgeot ended up losing its mega. Dodrio got swords dance, brave bird AND jump kick and if I remember right, a slight stat boost in gen 7 too.
It's a good one! I'm not sure it'll remain in the A tier after the new year when some tweaks come to the formula but it's definitely the best normal/flying gen 1 Pokemon!
Gotta love the race! Two similar ones might push each other to be better (Brock split) Two of a pair, but different probably will give you more to work with and be less monotonous, so for your sake, I'd say two more different ones in the future. Not to mention what wacky stuff might be born out of it.
I’ll wrap up current projects, keep up everything else, and see how this one does in a week. There’s a lower limit that would deter me from putting in the extra work when time is tight atm but I enjoyed it.
There's several playlists but Zapdos's updated run was on stream. There's a time pre-Abra in about September/October of last year where the format changed and everything before that isn't an official tier card ranked Pokemon. A ton of runs have a stream. Moltres is semi-recent, Zapdos is a little bit ago.
I liked the production of this video. Since vs videos are usually long its nice that you cut out some battles etc which are similar with these Pokemon. Also showing the optimized runs in the first place doesnt make the video too long. Since Dodrio is my favourite gen 1 normal bird makes this interesting but I dont think other poketubers even did Dodrio run in gen 1 yet. Dodrio being my favourite I still have to appreciate Fearows performance. It really feels like an underrated Pokemon even though the common birds arent the top tier. This still left me wondering that would it make sence at all to use double edge with Dodrio since it would propably do a monstrous damage with that attack stat and stab to one shot more here and there?
Yea, it was longer but I don't see the need for like a 90+ minute runtime. There's relevant information and then there's just showing every single battle just because. I think the critical thinking is determining what is relevant and what is just wasting the audience's time. I like the optimized run approach because realistically 50% view time is what even good channels get and if you just waste half the video on a blind run, what are you really showing off, you know?
An excellent duo to go head to head! I have heard dodrio is the best bird, let's see! I definitely rate Tri-attack, though I'm not exactly sure on how the secondary effects (burn, freeze, paralyze) works in gen 1
Yea, I'm not sure how to do it and make it entertaining just yet. I'd realistically like to wait until I'm at like 75/151 for the halfway point so I don't have to do too many.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 agree with you bro, take your time to do things your way because, personaly, I think the majority of people that follows you (me included) like your more natural style of video
Real one! This one was very fun to watch. I was impressed at how close it was for a good chunk of the run but I was sure Dodrio would win it in the end. What was the second source of sprites you used in the run? I recall seeing the one set but the other set was new to me.
Yea, I did about 8 playthroughs total. Towards the last couple it was really trying to find what Fearow could do that Dodrio couldn't and unless Fearow somehow could do Lorelei at level 60, it just didn't have a chance.
Looking at your tier list. I think a pokémon yellow Charizard would be crazy. Interesting. Access to stab fly in place of having to bodyslam or slash for the Blastoise and lances gyrados, and even for fighting types is an interesting adaptation.
A few videos ago I did Charizard in both versions. Red version is multiple points higher. Slash and Swords Dance don't mix and Fly is just subpar. It's there to watch though! My words or my optimized runs aren't gospel so I'm always open to someone showing a better strategy but I'm fairly confident!
Yea, pure speed and raw attack generally always beat out things propped up with boosts. When you have to boost early and often, the time piles up and that's why the majority of the top 10-15 runs don't use badge boosts at all.
We have heard and seen many times how Brock can be considered the toughest gym leader and the Brock split greatly influences solo runs, but this head to head run really highlights it. As Matt said, Fearow got a head start against Brock, and even though it is considerably stronger, it took Drodrio half the run to catch up
For sure. If I had played it safe and consistent we'd see these two go to 13 and have considerable time added to their runs but it's no fun if every run plays it safe and doesn't really tell you much.
Well in terms of that run, everything is as intended. The Swords Dance boost just working how it's mechanically supposed to is what makes it good, not the tiny 12.5% badge boosts 65% through the game.
i'd like to file a law suit, you keep telling me to obtain a soda pop as i watch these videos. but you never tell me which one! i'm dying of thirst here?!?!
Nice versus video, I’m surprised how well Fearow was able to hang in there. An interesting strat for Lorelei with Dodrio: you can overwrite drill peck with fly (I know, I know) to avoid dewgong’s first attack. Then assuming it rests, after setting up 2 agilities you have around a 50% chance to OHKO with body slam. When it survives there’s a 50% chance Lorelei will super potion, so there are excellent chances of getting past the dewgong on full health. This is probably better in Yellow, I recently played yellow with Dodrio and also targeted a level 63 Lorelei
It’s been a while since I watched or recorded but did I do 53? 55? A lot of extra levels would solve most things but doing a ton of runs with other Pokémon and knowing what the times means often puts consistency to the wayside. I do think yellow might be better if you do the cheesy double team Giovanni strat but I just opted to keep these in red/blue. It’s something I might explore again one day but I struggle to get redos of 3 year old runs as it is and this one is pretty recent.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 I don’t think it’s that much of a time save, we both did Lorelei at level 63. I think fly is a touch more consistent but functionally it’s about the same Edit: you got a crit on the dewgong, and if you’re rolling a crit it’s better than using fly
Fearow vs. Dodrio is like the "Daniel vs. the Cooler Daniel" meme. Poor Fearow. Game Freak should really throw it a bone in some way. They gave Pidgeot a Mega, Dodrio a stat buff (albeit a minor one) in Gen 7, and Farfetch'd got a regional form with its own evolution. Fearow got nothing :( Also, let's give a shout to our new Bird Duel Champion!!!
I was actually wondering if you were going to try and utilize razor wind here. For the more consistent knockouts after Misty as opposed to relying on fury attack with fearow
I think that's a remake thing. Razor Wind is in the Rocket Hideout, takes two turns, and only has 75% accuracy. I think it's effective power with accuracy and multiple turns added in would be less than a low roll on a two turn Fury Attack.
Fearow level 65 2 hours 50 minutes Dodrio level 61 2 hours 35 minutes TOMBSTONER BROTHER Dodrio beats farfetchd for title BARELY I LOVE THE VERSUS contest
I generally love your videos, but I'll admit that I often skip through some parts. I'm at the Top 4 as i right this comment, and watched every second of it. I love this concept, for Pokemon with similar stats. I rooted for Fearow, the good boy did well❤
I always had a soft spot for Fearow. It was just cooler than Pidgeot (due in no small part to learning drill peck and that wicked cry it has). I never understood the folks that outright dislike it.
Dodrio gets a lot of good stuff when it needs it. It was a surprisingly good pick and something I'd like to bring over to gen 2 one day where it has a TON of potential.
I really like going over the splits as they happen.. it adds a little bit of drama to the video, so that we can watch the progress as it goes, and root for the respective birds
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 I personally like that idea a lot. If I were to make such a thing for single videos, maybe compare it to similar pokemon. Like (sorry I didn't check if you've done it already before typing) when / if you do a Kadabra run, compare its splits to the rest of the Abra line, or even to Haunter since it's also a middle stage evolution of a strong special attacker, or Rhydon vs Golem, etc. Anyway, just a thought. Thank you for the work and content.
Skipping the rocket hideout is unfair, it’s part of the game and utilizing a glitch to skip it just doesn’t make sense in my opinion. I like that you do it.
I just think some Pokemon like Zapdos and Dodrio, for example, that have to actually think about how to handle it adds some depth. When you remove certain things or allow some RNG based things to stay, it just pushes all the Pokemon closer together. If you skipped the hideout, had massive RNG in Mt. Moon, had randomness in HM users, then runs like these could potentially just look like the same run to the layman.
I hope you don't take this as a criticism, but my problem with seeing 2 runs like this in a single video means that there will always be a "good guy/bad guy" aspect to it that can be slightly distracting. Like you said, everyone wants to root for the underdog. Great work as always though.
The three REAL legendary birds Pidgeot Fearow and Dodrio I chose fearow because at the time you get doduo hes already ev trained and dodrio is barealy faster and only has 20 points in attack stat, fearow is obtained much earlier And this dodrio got way too many extra fights
The way you covered your VS race is quite nice to listen to. I hope this succeeds and you do more. I'll like, and leave a comment. Real one.

@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Ah I see, bad memory I guess
Your a real one GLM. Loved the Vs video and as always your commentary was top notch. I'd love more of these
Appreciate that brother. I'd like to do more. I got some busy times coming up and some runs to wittle down into videos but it's something to think about. It did about middle of the pack and that's good enough for me to look into another later!
hyped to see this one, my bet is on my boy dodrio with its considerably higher attack. im definitely down for more vids in this style
It played out masterfully! Enjoy it.
Real One. Dodrio really did assert itself as the Normal Bird GOAT of Gen 1.
I totally agree with not using the pokedoll skip. And I like the idea of head to head runs A LOT
They take more time to produce but I guess it'll all depend on how it performs. It's essentially two videos in one!
Yea I try to lay it out as clear as possible at the start to give a great idea but Fearow has the deck stacked against it for sure.
Man I love the Green sprites. Great vid as usual Matt
Yea I definitely needed multiple sprites to keep it different. The green ones should never be forgotten lol.
You put a ton of work into this one brother! Props! # Most entertaining Pokémon content creator
I do what I can. Yea these are a lot of work. Not sure if it's worth it but we'll just keep an eye and an open mind towards it.
I love a good VS video, and I'm glad my 3-headed boy showed up. I feel bad that in every playthrough I've ever done, I never catch a doduo/dodrio, I just always have a flyer by the time I get to their location! :D
For sure. It's just more efficient to get it out of the way. Catching a flyer halfway through the game feels so slow to me.
Awesome job on the runs glm you are a real one brother. I like the verus format but it is more work for sure.
Oh yea. I'm not great at the workflow for it so it's like 3 videos worth of work but it's fun!
REAL ONE! I also like this type of content Matt, keep it coming. I was surprised to see the times but I knew Dodrio would win the race . Great job brother!
Oh yea. It had the edge but Fearow kept it interesting and the story arc for the normal/flying birds was interesting overall.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 absolutely! Couldn’t agree more
Who knows what the future will hold for VS. I'll have to see if I get that wild hair.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 i look forward to your content either way my friend. I’m here for it
Enjoy that juicy Forretress content soon lol.
I got statistics for this one!
Farfetch'd getting able to badge boost glitch with Swords Dance so early is a definite game changer.
But my money is just on DoDrio.. it's speed and attack are just so good.
Just the attack boosts are the prize. The badge boost glitch doesn't really factor into that run much, just the ability to 4x your attack stat!
Really enjoyed a versus video for a change bro, hope it performs well!
We'll just have to see after a few days!
The day I stop chuckling at, "TOOOOMBSTONERRRR BROTHERRRR!" will be the day I question my reality haha
Sounds about right.
Nicely done! Both were more similar then I thought they would.
Both are having an access to the best flying move in gen 1,in trems of a practical usage, and they are both fast with the same option to badge boost.
But I betted on Dodrio, because of its base stats ,and the access to body slam. 😊But at least Fearow had double edge which is a good alternative too.😊
I have enjoyed the format quite a lot.
You'll be able to improve more and more as you try out new things. 😁
Variety is the spice of life! A glass half full mentality of just goofing around and not being tethered to TH-cam as a job is that I'm free to try and do anything I want without 60k people yelling at me.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Well said😁.
Two similar ones might push each other to be better (Brock split)
Two of a pair, but different probably will give you more to work with and be less monotonous, so for your sake, I'd say two more different ones in the future. Not to mention what wacky stuff might be born out of it.
I’ll wrap up current projects, keep up everything else, and see how this one does in a week. There’s a lower limit that would deter me from putting in the extra work when time is tight atm but I enjoyed it.
Bonus points for double edge.
1990s strats
150 effective power is no joke!
I gotta watch the zapdos and articuno vids I am pretty thundershocked articuno won out.
Before we go anywhere in this video, I'm thinking dodrio will take it. But I'm looking forward to seeing what actually happens
It was interesting to put together to see how close I could get them.
An excellent duo to go head to head! I have heard dodrio is the best bird, let's see!
I definitely rate Tri-attack, though I'm not exactly sure on how the secondary effects (burn, freeze, paralyze) works in gen 1
They don't have a secondary effect in gen 1. It's just a worse body slam here.
Nice video as always brother. Im interested in the tierlist for the end of the year by the way lol
Sad to not see Rage make your final move set… 😂 real one brother 🤜🏽
I think rage has been used twice ever. Kangaskhan can make alright use of it on Brock and Ditto taking it from Onix on the Bruno fight.
Always had a soft spot for Dodrio. Hoping it gets the "W" in this one.
It definitely has the edge but it's closer than you might think!
Fearow is like the eevee version of the legendary birds
Damn, didn't know Fearow was legendary. TIL!
The versus runs are fun but can be a little intense. I'll watch both versus and regular though
Let the tier lists be for the real ones though 😉
Oh yea, they require a good bit more work for real but they are fun to do!
Congrats and nice finish! Thought Farfetched would be on top for sure, but turns out that beat it!!!
Also "real one"!
Second?
Also elephants are cool
Real one
That went how I thought it would, I've used both so many times. The real surprise is how well farfetchd contends with them!
Farfetch'd is a beast. Early Swords Dance just lets you ignore the awful stats.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 big time, I knew it would help, but gen 1s busted mechanics never fail to amaze
Well in terms of that run, everything is as intended. The Swords Dance boost just working how it's mechanically supposed to is what makes it good, not the tiny 12.5% badge boosts 65% through the game.
I like the verses videos! Hope to see more!
I think some more will definitely be in the future.
12 special spices ready to go!
Ready to settle the score once and for all!
The only problem I have with your content is that I want more of it (I know this isn't your full time job, I just mean it as a compliment)
Appreciate that! It would be nice to be able to dedicate 40 hours to the craft for sure lol. I'm about 10x the views short haha.
TH-cam fed me your channel to discover you, gotta admit, that southern accent totally broke up my background and made me pay attention
Noice. It's glad to see the algorithm actually favoring me for once lol. I love to hear it.
i'd like to file a law suit, you keep telling me to obtain a soda pop as i watch these videos. but you never tell me which one! i'm dying of thirst here?!?!
It’s more of a metaphorical suggestion. I recommend sodie brand soda pop.

Everyone who does the remakes gets to learn just how strong that kangaskhan can be against specific threats, along with the rocks
It's got some pretty monstrous stats and when it's special defense is buffed, it's a terror.
Real one 58:52
Gotta love those STAB drill pecks!
If only there was a really good flying move lol.
I think fly is a touch more consistent but functionally it’s about the same
Edit: you got a crit on the dewgong, and if you’re rolling a crit it’s better than using fly
Ha, I’m used to my recent sub 2 hour runs weak to Lorelei doing 50-55. 63 is steep!
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 it is, but these flying types really don’t have good options
Yea they are pretty bland. Dodrio is quite good though for a standard flying type.
I suppose this means that Matt has in fact heard that the bird is the word.
I've seen a Family Guy or two.
Your videos are awesome keep it up
Appreciate that, brother.
Fearow got nothing :(
Also, let's give a shout to our new Bird Duel Champion!!!
It really is like that, lol. It did the best with what it had!
Really good one. Love dodrio the bird KING
It was a pretty good run at the end of the day.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 your right! It's whirlwind on route 4. 😬
Fearow level 65 2 hours 50 minutes
Dodrio level 61 2 hours 35 minutes

Dodrio beats farfetchd for title BARELY
I LOVE THE VERSUS contest
Oh yea. A new addition to the A tier!
You're a real one Matt
Appreciate it!
Real one. Great video.
Appreciate that, brother.
I generally love your videos, but I'll admit that I often skip through some parts. I'm at the Top 4 as i right this comment, and watched every second of it. I love this concept, for Pokemon with similar stats. I rooted for Fearow, the good boy did well❤
Nice. I like to hear that. Fearow did give it it's best shot but Dodrio had too much ammunition.
Love the nickname Hat Trick!
Me too. You are the first person to say something about it but I thought it's a top tier Dodrio name.
Can't wait to see the bird winner!
It'll definitely be a bird, that's for sure.
I always had a soft spot for Fearow. It was just cooler than Pidgeot (due in no small part to learning drill peck and that wicked cry it has). I never understood the folks that outright dislike it.
The good thing about gen 1 is that there’s no shortage of birds to pick lol.
I wasn't paying attention looked down and saw that dodrio was using dig against Giovanni and was like why didn't you teach dodrio dog earlier
Glad you figured it out lol.
Dodrio actually is a great PU pokemon and has always had a solid niche in lower tiers, fearow on the other hand not so.
Yea, I got a little piece of software to automatically record them. Even for single videos they'll start popping in I think.
*glug, glug, glug* oooh, sodie pops!!
It's that time of year!
I'm pretty sure my girthy mom thinks tm28 is Tombstoner, brother!
Also, real one. ;)
The age old question!
Fine with normal videos if this is solidly more work fot you but I'm down if it means more ranked Pokemon
I always play it by ear and see how it goes. I like the format though but whatever works time-wise always wins!
Calling it in favor of Dodrio before the run even starts!
Solid guess! You have a 50/50 as long as you can say one of the two on the cover, haha.
I hope you don't take this as a criticism, but my problem with seeing 2 runs like this in a single video means that there will always be a "good guy/bad guy" aspect to it that can be slightly distracting. Like you said, everyone wants to root for the underdog. Great work as always though.
Yea I think the winner/loser mentality is near impossible to avoid. I’m not sure if there’s a solution.
Sandshrew looks so different!
Different sprites for different mites!
Love the mvc2 music
One of the best soundtracks!
Nice video. Real one
Appreciate that a lot, brother.
The three REAL legendary birds
Pidgeot Fearow and Dodrio
I chose fearow because at the time you get doduo hes already ev trained and dodrio is barealy faster and only has 20 points in attack stat, fearow is obtained much earlier
And this dodrio got way too many extra fights
Yea, that's why you gotta start with them. It's the only way for a fair comparison.
Popped open a Black Cherry Hanks cola!
Sounds good but I can confidently say I've never heard of that lol.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 no idea where it’s all sold. It’s in Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky for sure though. Damn good root beer from them too
