    He needs a plexiglass separator like they do with drums. Seems like after his first break he might have been still sort of wound up and forgot to back off :P Great playing by all in any case.

    These guys are freakin awesome! Noam plays the banjo like it should be played. As much as I love guys Earl and JD, bluegrass has produced far too many banjo players who do nothing but copy their style note for note. Noam is setting the banjo free.

    • @quaddawg
      @quaddawg 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Joshua Caleb well said!! I agree! Noam is a top notch player that CAN bring that old time sound at will but brings something so beautiful and advanced that it is truly setting that instrument free... I may quote you!!

      @@steelmillwill When did you suffer whatever traumatic injury that damaged your hearing? If you can't follow the melody in those lines then you need some ear training. And pretty much every banjo player who is worth their salt acknowledges Noam as one of the greatest to ever do it. But please, Will Heskett, you show us how it's done.

    • @softailspringer9915
      @softailspringer9915 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really. Guess you could say I’m a guitar snob and that the banjo is a pain in the ass unless played by Earl or Ralph or one of those cats. Otherwise I’d prefer a telecaster

    Scruggs purists make me laugh. Earl was always looking for new places to take banjo playing. To stick exclusively with his style of playing is to deny his whole ethos. Same with Bill Monroe. People ragged on New Grass Revival because it "wasn't how Bill Monroe wanted bluegrass to be played", as if that should matter one iota. But Bill Monroe really like NGR. Bluegrass started out as progressive music. Why shouldn't it continue to be so? Purists make no sense.

  • @aspenbanjo
    @aspenbanjo 17 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Vamping is only one of the many ways a banjo can back up a guitar. Noam is notably backing off when Andy and Tony break, and uses a very different style then...he stays away from any real melody notes, and, in doing so, does not interfere with the flatpicking. His rolling backup keeps the "drive" going, fills holes, and provides a sense of rhythm. If there was a good condenser mic sitting in the middle of that circle, you would hear a very different sound, probably less distorted.

    that's what I'm talkin' about, gtuckerkellog. Listening to old recordings of first generation 'grassers will reveal spots in the tune where the banjo drops right out. Nowadays, it drives right through, but with a sense of dynamic such that it does not overpower the others. You can hear Noam's tone and presence change throughout the tune. The bottom line, however, is that there are only about 2 other pickers in the galaxy who can criticize anything Noam does!

  • @saullouis

    just to add to your point, I know Tony loves to have the banjo stay on a roll through other solos for just the reasons you mention. It's one of the defining characteristics of a modern bluegrass sound. (I used to play in a band with Tony, and we've had endless discussions on this topic)

    Watching this video for the umpteenth time, I realize that it's not only a terrific version of a fine tune but also a great example of how three virtuosos play together, each in turn showcasing the other(s)...Note how the banjo player plays softly when the guitarists are playing...how Andy Falco (in cap) turns gently toward the other guitar player when his turn comes to be featured...Just the right "mix." A truly outstanding performance by seasoned pros!

    Earl Scruggs was on the panel the award Noam the Steven Martin Excellence in banjo award in 2011. Earl Scruggs was always for pushing the boundaries of the banjo. When he played with his sons, and they were using modern instruments and drums (for shame), that was a perfect example of that. He associates with Bela Fleck and Tony Trishka, both very progressive masters of the instrument. Earl can't read music and it is amazing what he can do, but I think limited his ability to innovate.
