The vacutainers (tubes) were expired that we used, and had very little vacuum left. Practicing resulted in very little blood loss

I'm an old RN, 37 years on the job and still working full-time (surgery). Way back when, we used to practice ALL our skills on each other in nursing school. I hear from the young nurses that this is no longer permitted in school. It's nice that you let them practice on a real person.
I've always been taught to keep the butterfly held with one hand and prep prior to one hand the rest of the process, I love in the UK I don't know if the training for it is different in America?

We were taught to keep it.
I have seen a phlebotomist take 12 bottles from a patient and when he was true before he loosened the tourniquet
@@Pkeats817 It is important to only keep a tourniquet on for a max of 1 minute to prevent hemoconcentration, which runs the risk of false lab results.
@@NelD001 The correct method to provide the most accurate lab results would be to release the tourniquet once the needle is inserted.
Should have taken the tourniquet off. It can only be on for 60 seconds. Good video though.
It looked like she was about to and the instructor wanted her to invert first.. I was think the same thing though!
@@Mrsyeakley41, ahhhh, okay. I see.
You are supposed to take the tourniquet off when you insert the last tube into the hub I believe

Don't let go of your needle! as there is that chance it could move and cause internal damage
Do not let go of that needle
According to the new guideline in CLSI, it is recommended that you hold on to the butterfly.
Exactly! never let go of it unless it’s taped down and even then be cautious.
You can

Is the tourniquet supposed to be there once iv access is obtained?
No. It should be removed as soon as possible. It may alter the results of some analytes. I will not apply it for more than 1-2 mins.
Why is the tourniquet still on
I like when the instructor repeats. Mine did to when you are nervous you hear instructions better lol
