And to think that his body was so brittle from cancer to the point he would crack ribs from coughing...yet he recorded this. He recorded this whilst laying in a heavily padded medical lounger. His brilliance continued to shine throughout the pain in order to give the gift of his "Golden Voice" to his fans. Leonard is well loved and so much missed. I am thankful that I got to see him perform live two times.
That entire album is totally haunting and heartbreaking... We can hear the last steps of an old man, considering the wounds and the ephemeral joys of his past. After a long journey into the darkness, penetrated by some lightning, Leonard Cohen is now ready to "leave the table" and to close the book of his life for good : he did what he had to do. Thank you so much, dear Leonard, for all the beauty and the emotions that you gave to your listeners during all these years. It is priceless.
And yes, "There is a crack in everything, that's how the light comes in". I hope that Leonard realizes how much he and his work means and ment to so many people.
Merci ! C'est very understandable !
He was glad to at least be well enough to send off a good farewell (he knew he was dying .. was excepting of it). It would be grand if death should be so gracious for us all. How fortunate a man.
It takes even more than courage to write lyrics like that...it takes genius and it takes the grace of God. The Man had all three: courage, genius and the grace of God. Respect to him, thanks and Hallelujahs.
I don’t need a reason, for what I became. I’ve got these excuses, their tired and lame. This is the genius of Leonard Cohen. This album is a testament of a man going towards the sunset of his life but he manages to still entwine the darkness with insight and beauty. I am, and always will be a Leonard Cohen fan. His work is of an exceptional standard. Those lyrics, well, he never wastes a word. His message is honest, self deprecating and there’s some humour in there too. I never met the man but I miss him. I Saw him in concert here in Ireland and it remains the greatest show I have seen. The final album “thanks for the dance “ is a true masterpiece. It is sad , emotional and brilliant. This is what to expect from the great Leonard Cohen
The DAWNING OF LIFE.. Every man's Goal unless you compartmentalize HIM as other than us. He is testament to the hero in the man for Divine Love with a Woman.. and HE a man was conciously capable of Her. THE DILEMNA OF THE AMERICAN MAN IS HE CAN NOT ADMIT HE DOES NOT HAVE WHAT Leonard HAD.
I played this song in my car today. My mother was with me. Suddenly I realized, that I don`t want to lose her and vice versa. But this moment will come rather sooner than later. We both cried.
Bob Dylan doesn't normally do accolades.....Here's what he said: 'When people talk about Leonard, they fail to mention his melodies, which to me, along with his lyrics, are his greatest genius,' Dylan said. 'Even the counterpoint lines-they give a celestial character and melodic lift to every one of his songs. 'As far as I know, no one else comes close to this in modern music. His gift or genius is in his connection to the music of the spheres.'
maxmoderator1 Thank you for sharing that wonderful accolade. I have argued for years that his melodies are hugely under appreciated. I'm just not as articulate as Dylan.
or an acceptance of an unfullied life. "i dont need a reason, for what i became, ive got these excuses, they're tired and they're lame .... There's no one left to blame" It seems he must've had some regret but has given up with the old tired excuses and with blaming people. Most of whom (parents, family, friends, colleagues, lovers) are probably dead now that he is such an old man. (at the time of writing)
He knew he wasn't perfect, he had his demons, and tried to deal with them, he was just being honest. We tend to glorify people who have written great, wonderful songs and poems, as if they had all the answers to life's problems.....Dylan has repeatedly said he doesn't and so does Cohen. They are not prophets, or gods no matter how much they touched us, made us think, etc. And the beautiful thing is that both have said this about themselves. Dylan says I owe you nothing, I am NOT a voice of a generation. Despite their great music, it doesn't mean their lives were like that or even well lived. That is part of the beauty of LC, he has remained in touch with the everyday, and I think Dylan went out of his way to avoid these labels. He once said that is too much to lay on anyone. Because of this, I think he was able to connect with so many people, and has somehow avoided all the trappings of fame that affect some in strange ways.

I discovered him around 1998 when I won tickets to his show from a radio station in Seattle, didn't really know him, and I was mesmerized and gobsmacked. Even his many religious references didn't bother me :) I saw him again around 2009 and he was, of course, brilliant again. I feel so fortunate to have stumbled into him live and in person. I highly recommend the tribute movie "I'm Your Man," with other artists singing his songs, which might not sound that appealing, but to hear Rufus Wainwright and all the others perform his songs is really something.
Oh, no. I just heard. I'm going to be very sad for a while and will always always miss his physical presence on this earth. I knew, I did. He told us anyway, with this last album. And he'd have known. God bless you Leonard Cohen - I send you my love, always. Cheryl November 7, 2016
He had the time to do this. (knowing he was dying) . It would be grand if all of us had this time as well; and could die in such a gracious manner. What a gem & great songwriter & fortunate man.

Goodnight Maestro....many thanks to Mr.Docherty my English teacher 47 years ago for playing 'Suzanne' in a poetry lesson for our class when I was 13. I've been a 'Beautiful Loser' ever since that day....thank you Mr.Cohen and Mr.Docherty...🎶🎶🎶🎶

Emma Emerson Emma, then you might also like to know that Adjani is no Virgin Mary. But she had been divorced for some time, before she started dating LC. A few months ago I read an article/post by an Italian guy who had happened to meet her in a music shop in Austin, where she was working as clerk/shop assistant. He wrote he had recognized her and inquired after Leonard, who at the time was still on Mount Baldy. She said that she hadn't heard from him in a while...Then the guy says that he asked her out and she accepted. He boasts that she did to him what Janis did to Leonard at the Chelsea Hotel. I don't know whether to believe him or not.
As a Leonard devotee and one who understands all his subtle nuances, the line: "We're spending the treasure that LOVE cannot afford." Quite possibly the most profound lyric ever. Beyond breathtaking.
Leonard, don't give up yet. But if you have to leave soon, please know how much you have taught us through your music & verse. And no matter how it turns out, you will be in my prayers until the end of time.
Brilliant.. amazingly Brilliant... this song to me means they are older and the beast is tamed.. no more cord, no drama or controlling each other.(not making a claim).. just a sweet free spirited love in their old age... (do not need a lover).. something still so SWEET and REAL now.
I'm so sorry! I will never forget your songs, your music..., your great personallity, the Concert in der Waldbühne in Berlin, a few years ago! You gave me so much good feelings in my live. I'll always keep it in my heart! Thank you!!! I feel so much love for you, because you gave me and the hole world the BEST and ''Hallelluja'', one of the greatest songs and...! Now sleep deep and well, Leonard Cohen! R.I.P.!
I think it's the best album of his life. At the age of 83, with terminal cancer, he records this testament to his genius?! I'm in awe.

'I don't know the people in your picture frame.' This single line of poetry is SO evocative of distance and longing and heartbreak. Genius.
You may have left the table, Cohen... But not before playing one mighty hell of a hand.
I couldn't have said it better.
This was fucking beautiful.
And to think that his body was so brittle from cancer to the point he would crack ribs from coughing...yet he recorded this.
He recorded this whilst laying in a heavily padded medical lounger.

If anybody deserved the Nobel prize for literature, it would have been the great poet Leonard Cohen. (With respect to Mr Dylan).

I’m leaving the table
I’m out of the game
I don’t know the people
In your picture frame
If I ever loved you, oh no, no
It’s a crying shame
If I ever loved you
If I knew your name
You don’t need a lawyer
I’m not making a claim
You don't need to surrender
I’m not taking aim
I don’t need a lover, no, no, no
The wretched beast is tame
I don’t need a lover
So blow out the flameThere’s nobody missing
There is no reward
Little by little
We’re cutting the cord
We’re spending the treasure, oh no, no
That love cannot afford
I know you can feel it
The sweetness restored
Simply the best, if he wasn't the word of God, then God never spoke. The world is a considerably less beautiful place now that he's gone
