    Flat Character arc works best (imho) when the character is just fully themselves, usually not perfect but good with who they are. This character is introduced to a world where who they are is different somehow and it is in continuing to just be exactly who they are that they instigate change in the people around them. It is the secondary characters, who have arcs. (Ex. Pollyanna.)

      I do feel like this subject needs more discussion. I adore Abbie, but I was STUCK on my WIP because I was trying to find my MC's Lie and Misbelief but it kept leading my story in directions I didn't want it to go. Then I discovered the concept of the "Flat character arc" and it's actually described as an arc where the character doesn't change in any major way but instead changes the world around them.... And THAT is my story. The flat arc MC is still human, has flaws and while they know the TRUTH that they are trying to get their world to see they go through stages of DOUBT of the truth of themselves... Think: Forrest Gump and Joan of Arc. These characters don't change much but they are anything but boring.

      @@Kiki-alienmom Abbie made everything confusing with her terminology. I had to figure this out on my own, but if you'd like, I can post info you'll find helpful about character arcs here. It takes what Abbie says but makes it **clear** and not misinformed. So, pulled straight from my notes (all shorthand to digest faster), here's what it looks like:
      Character Arcs
      Normal Story Structure of a Positive Change Character Arc: Opening Image: Truth(gets stated as a Lie)>Lie>Flaw(External) and Desire/Want(Internal) vs Fear(of the current situation from getting it)>Misbelief(Modified Lie)>Flaw(External) and Want(Internal)>Misbelief(Modified Lie)…till finale: new plan beat>Need>Truth. This is introduced in act one as a Lie of the Truth from the Opening Image, where throughout the story, their Flaw is shown externally and their Want internally which drives that flaw together, which together then generates a misbelief by the next plot point, modifying their Lie, and so on so forth all the way through until the Finale Beat to complete their character arc with the Need surfacing over the Want, and it shapes to them adopting the Truth to remove the Want while Flaws can reman ever present as a part of the character forming their Ghost for a sequel as a Flat arc.
      Now let’s look at a Negative Character Arc, Disillusionment: Truth(gets stated as a lie)>Lie>Flaw(External) and Want(Internal)>Misbelief(Modified Lie)>Flaw(External) and Want(Internal)>Misbelief(Modified Lie)…till finale: new plan beat>Need>Truth Becomes Tragic. So, same thing, but the Truth moment is so much to handle, they are disillusioned as a character with it that they are jaded and not feeling happy by the end. They know the Truth, but the Lie remains as a scar to rock the Truth from correcting it.
      Now let’s look at a Negative Character Arc, The Fall Arc: Opening Image: Truth(gets stated as a Lie)>Lie>Flaw(External) and Want(Internal)>Misbelief(Modified Lie)>Flaw(External) and Want(Internal)>Misbelief(Modified Lie)…till finale: new plan beat>Clings To Lie(formerly Need)>Rejects Truth>Believes Worse Lie. The difference here is they cling to the Lie in the face of the Need, they double down and reject the Truth, and then end up believing an even worse Lie as a result.
      Now let’s look at a Negative Character Arc, The Corruption Arc: Opening Image: Truth(gets stated as a lie)>Lie>Flaw(External) and Want(Internal)>Misbelief(Modified Lie)>Flaw(External) and Want(Internal)>Misbelief(Modified Lie)…till finale: new plan beat>Sees The Truth (formerly Need)>Rejects Truth>Embraces Lie. So the difference here is they see the Truth in their moment of Need but reject the Truth and instead embrace their current Lie rather than believing in a worse one.
      Now let’s at a Positive Character Arc, Flat: Opening Image: Truth(gets stated as a Ghost-their flashback/backstory-burying the Lie)>Truth(they don’t believe in a Lie anymore)>Lie(External to the World) and Truth(formerly Want, Internal Truth remains buried) oppose>External Clash(formery Misbelief/Modified Lie)>Lie(External to the World) and Truth(Internal Truth Buried)>External Clash(formerly Misbelief/Modified Lie)…till finale: new plan beat>Truth(Internal Truth buried) surfaces and overcomes Lie(External to the World)>Truth(External to the World). Essentially in a flat character arc, and why it’s so often seen in sequels, is because the Truth is introduced at the start but is buried internally as a Ghost of their past, so it becomes about the Lie of the external World around them having an External Clash with their Internal Truth that remains buried, until the finale where the Internal Truth surfaces and overcomes the Lie of the external World, which everything then becomes chipper with the Truth now being external to the World and the character.
      Hope this helps!

    Flat Character Arcs: When writing a book with a protagonist who doesn't change, there's still character arcs required for the story to work.
    It's simply a difference of focus. With a change arc you're focusing on how what happens effects your protagonist and helps them come to the knowledge of the truth relating to the big lie they were telling themselves, with a flat arc the focus is on how your protagonist effects those around them by holding steadfast, in the face of adversity, to a truth they have already learned. In other words, if your protagonist has a change arc, your side characters are ok having flat arcs because you are showing more how they effect change in your main character, but if your main character has a flat arc, then the side characters must have change arcs by their interaction with the main character. You're showing why what they learned is true by focusing on testing it in various ways in a longer form than when they originally learned the truth.
    So flat arcs can be quite intriguing if done with that perspective in mind.

      With a character who doesn't change, you can also have a greater focus on flashbacks that can show some of the times they weren't perfect. An example would be if you were to follow Avatar: The Last Airbender from Uncle Iroh's perspective more than Aang's or Zuko's perspective.

    • @Eluzian86
      @Eluzian86 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd have to say the movie Hacksaw Ridge is the best example that comes to mind on how to do a flat character arc story, because Doss never changed no matter what happened. No matter how hard the test, and that movie is incredible!

    • @Eluzian86
      @Eluzian86 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Characters with flat arcs can still have some outward progression though. My favorite anima Kenichi The Mightiest Desciple, has a main character with a flat arc because his inward character, who he is, never changes. However, he has progression with each new martial arts fighting style, he faces off against more and more skilled opponents, each one requiring specific new techniques to have a chance of winning the fight, and it shows how his character effects the inward character of each opponent he goes against. So having no character arc doesn't mean a lack of progress.

    What I came to believe about the flat character arc is totally different. From what I learned the best flat characters are the mentors who had there positive arcs in the past when they were younger and are there to guide the other characters through their own similar positive character arcs with their own past experiences.

    I think a good subtle character arc is Mariska Hargitay's character, Capt. Olivia Benson, on Law & Order: SVU. She is definitely the main hero protagonist of the show. She doesn't have any deep flaws. But because she is so deeply empathetic to those special victims, she is slowly transformed. The writing of this show has changed a lot in the 25 seasons the show has been airing but this particular aspect has been a constant the entire time. I will say though that in the last several years the lessons she learns aren't always related to special victims and are now expanded to many of the social issues we see in the news today. It is my favorite television show and I've seen every episode at least two or three times and some more than that. Her character is the longest running character on a primetime television series, male or female, ever in all of TV history. The show has been greenlit for a 26th season on NBC -- for anyone who's interested.

    I think my current project might be one with a flat character arc *and I just knew* that this question would trigger something in Abbie. *I think her philosophy of character arcs hold true for the most part!* But I personally think a flat character arc could also work, because in my story *the focus is more on society and humanity at large* than about a character struggling with finding purpose for herself. I'm confident this story will still pull some emotional strings, because *it still very much revolves around people's needs and desires.* 😊 ( *BUT:* there is certainly potential for character development when considering the entire movie series I'm planning. So I think the character arc will be more evident in the sequels to the first movie.)

    8:55 Hi Abbie, quick question: doesn’t Katniss from THG have a flat character arc? She don’t change at all and I don’t find her boring nor perfect...

    • @mariamahmed2021
      @mariamahmed2021 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Hey! I'm not Abbie, but your question made me think! I love THG and what I actually love A LOT is Katniss's character arc. In The Hunger Games, she just wants to protect her sister, survive, and she doesn't care what she has to do for it, even if that means killing everyone else in the Games. She doesn't think about the "bigger picture" of things where she wonders what role she's playing in the grand scheme of things. When Gale asks the "what ifs" of the future, she doesn't want to hear it because she knows it's not possible. By Mockingjay, she's completely different because she doesn't want to be a "piece in their game" and realizes she's NOT okay with doing anything just to survive anymore. She cares about her identity and the revolution and defeating Snow. If you're referring to her arc within the first book, that's a little more flat, but one could argue that the same internal conflict was present with the Rue subplot and those moments like when she shot an arrow at the Gamemaker. She was starting to learn that there's more to it than just her sister and her family and even her district, and realizing that everything the Capitol was doing was real and had real consequences. AND OOPS sorry this turned way longer than I expected, but I hope it offered a new perspective!

She’s one of those characters who is always taken as an example for flat characters, so that’s why I had doubts. Maybe she doesn’t believe a gripping lie about herself or the world she lives in, but she definitely changes her mind about getting involved in the bigger scheme.

      Yesss I wish I could join Patreon right now too but I can't just yet! If I can answer your question with a few things I learned? Ok uh... You don't have to read this or use these but this is what I discovered from comic relief characters or rather discovered about. Why is this character a comic relief character? I too have a comic relief character but recently discovered he has a lot of internal conflict in fact almost as much as MC! Why is he/she the comic relief? Most comic relief characters I have read about actually have a broken interior and use comedy as a facade. Why does this character laugh and joke and bring comedy to the table? Is it just natural or is it because they don't want to show people their broken parts? As to writing them, they are light-hearted if they are in a scene they won't make it dark and dull. In fact, during a dark and dull time, they'll lighten the mood and make it fun! They are rays of sunshine. They'll joke and their stance or body language is relaxed! I hope this helped lol if you read it! If you want more tips to check out my insta lol its Zeina_Writes!

  • @TimRG

    The perfect example for the subtle character arc is pretty much any Shonen Jump manga character. As for the Flat Character Arc, you can tell an interesting story. It's not about the character changing through a misbelief. It's about a character whose truth is challenged throughout the events of the story. Will they end up give in and accept the lie that everyone seems to be telling them. It can be an interesting story. However, it is very hard to pull off.

    I think the prologue can be more important than the first act. I'm using my prologue as a crime in progress, then act 1 displays what happened at the crime scene later and who's investigating it, then Act 2 addresses the victims directly of the crime followed by plot twist and resolution of who is responsible in act 3 followed by epilogue. I guess what I'm saying is to make it as good as Act 1 so that it's a page turner. I still don't have epilogue yet admittedly but I want it nuanced and tying into some of the themes of book 2 while Act 3 ties up the themes of book 1. I'm still rather new to all of this but your channel has helped especially with planning vs. pantsing.

    I absolutely love you, Abbie! Thank you so much for all your helpful advice. It really has changed me as a writer. However, there is one thing that I disagree with in this video (sort of based on my own research). I actually really live the flat character arc. Now, I understand it's a character that doesn't undergo any change, but I believe they have a solid foundation.
    It has never really crossed my mind that they are perfect, mainly because when I conceptualize a character with a flat character arc, they are FAR from perfect.
    After all, after the character transformation in a positive character arc doesn't exactly mean that the now transformed character is, in fact, perfect.
    The flat character mainly has a belief. Whether this belief is true or not is up to your discretion. Those types of characters, in my stories, tend to affect the character arc of my other characters.
    For example, in one story, I created an antagonist with two children. He has a strong belief that putting obscenely large standards for yourself will drive you to success. On one of the children, they take her father's advice and continues to place those standards on themselves, the other child, after seeing how morally wrong his father is (through the act of nearly killing a young queen in order to take the throne) decides that the belief is wrong, and that he must go in the opposite direction.
    I also really love it when the flat character becomes tested, which, I believe is the point of them. Let's go back on the other example of believing that setting high standards are the way to go, the father should be tested in the sense of, perhaps giving him a task that seems relatively simple, but he goes the extra mile to make something better than anyone ever suspected. I feel as though that example isn't very strong. It tends to make more sense in the positive direction, though, I do agree with Abbie when she does say that it can be boring. I believe it's only boring when the main character is the one with the flat arc. I'm against doing that, but I love it when side characters have it.
    Anyways, this is just my opinion. Hopefully, nobody will take it too harshly. I love you, Abbie and thanks so much for the videos!

    Hey Abbie, I just want to say, that I really love your videos. They’re a big help to me, and my book is almost ready to be written. I’m in the middle of outlining it, and I follow your advice on making it the best piece I’ve written once I finish it. Currently, I’m doing a chapter-by-chapter outline structure, with each scene being briefly described. I have a prologue in this outline, so to make it more interesting so readers don’t skip, do I have what is important to a character in it (backstory) or can I just write it with a character’s reaction to something occurring in it? Should I do the reaction in the prologue, or start with the backstory?
    Have a great week ahead!

    Hi Abbie, everything you say about the character arc and transformation makes sense, and yet ... . One of my favorite movies (and my husbands' and my daughter's) was "Apollo 13". Tom Hanks character doesn't go through much internal transformation: he was a good man, good husband and father at the beginning of the movie and he is a good man at the end. The movie was exciting and made us feel deeply throughout. Than the was "The First Man" with Ryan Gosling, where the MC can't let go of his grief for his child and goes through a transformation and has an arc and yet..... I'm sorry to say, we couldn't care less: we wanted to see a movie about a flight to the moon and not a movie about a grieving man...
    So, sometimes writers and screenwriters overthink things and eventually fail...

    After setting up a good dozen or so stories and series designed to fill in the history, backstory and general details relevant to my main fantasy series I am working on, I have settled on one to really dig into. It's been going very well, and I've been pleasantly surprised by how characters that just popped into my head with no frame of reference have developed so quickly, and how clearly the theme came about. I haven't gotten into the actual writing of the story yet, but the planning and outlining have been fun and I've only had a few snags along the way. I'm currently seeing if I can get past my main misgivings about the Save the Cat method and can use it to build up the parts of my story that are still undeveloped.

    Toph (ATLA) is a great example of a flat character arc. When we meet her, she knows who she is and she is a master bender. She doesn't go through a drastic transformation like her companions, but her arc is more subtle - learning how to trust others. Her personality and motivations remain pretty much the same throughout.

    Hey Abbie, I would like to know how you deal with writing over time in your book. An example would be if your story takes place over the course of a year. There are parts that are important little moments you need to catch. Because the time frame is so long, it's impossible to catch it all in one book, and I am finding it difficult to capture in a chapter. I'm finding it's not always consistent, like this happened on day 1, 2, 3... etc. I find myself pausing and trying really hard to convert my 3 act story structure outline into a full blown book. How do I tackle this?

    Good Day Abbie. I have a question about charactarism. I am writing my first book with a 13 year old boy called Nova as the main protagonist. I think i'm not really good with creating characters, and with that I mean: their weakness or weak points. Because it is obvious that you are way more experienced than me, I want to ask you about the weakness of this character. Nova has been held back and controlled by his stepdad for almost his whole life and he has experienced other terrible things. Since he's 11 he changed in a course over years. He feels now, Lets say more free, but something is still missing in his life (An adventure). What would you suggest as weakness with such character? Thank you already

There is soo many things I could write there, but how would I even start. Do I write from my perspective or do I write more like the little woman style? How would I do that? okkk So I have a few answers lol I speak from experience and from the fact that I'm a teen and have a channel {work in progress} for writing and an Insta for it! Ok, your first question! If you think you can manage more than one story which means more than one character and plot then, of course, you can! I am outlining one novel and writing the other and I think it's fine because I can manage but if you get stressed because of it then maybe reduce the number of books your writing or focus on one! A book about you and your family... I find books from your perspective more interesting as you get to see it from that person's head and how they think of it and their reactions and it's just better with things like that but that's more opinion-based but you could also write from preference if you like to write it from your perspective go ahead! Or from the same style as little women! I too am a teen so I have school and this year is especially important as it decides my future since I choose subjects I want to pursue and stuff but... if it really matters to you, you can find time to write. In the weekend in breaks at night or earlier in the morning. You could wake up early or you could spend a few minutes before bed writing! I really hope this helped and its ok if you didn't read it all but anyway have a nice day/night and I hope your story {ies} work out ok! Stay safe!

    Hello, Abbie! I’ve been following your channel for awhile, and am learning so much from your videos and podcast! I have an #AskAbbie question. :-)
    So, I’m writing a nonfiction story and am using the Save the Cat 3-act structure as a framework. My issue is that Story A and Story B are vastly different. This is making things a bit complicated. Story A is where readers will get the backstory on the character that represents me, but the real story/purpose of book is within Story B. Is it necessary to have both storylines, or should I focus on where the real story is?
    I’m struggling to know where to start the book and how to structure everything overall. Hope that makes sense. Thank you so much, Abbie!

After a while, step back, chill out, and review the results. Youll be suprised by how creative some of your ideas are. Pick your favorite few, then flesh them out, slowly coming up with a clear story idea.

I am trying to write a story where the main character is a side character to the plot. They interact with both sides and watch the events go down. (It's kind of like if the wife of a soldier was the main character, and the war was the story of the book.) These events are a few generations away from a huge war between the opposing kingdoms. The purpose of the story at the time is to create the tension between the kingdoms leading to a final battle that determines which side will get there way. How would I go about writing a story with an off center point of view like this?
